‘The United Lioeral Societies. 7O THE BDITOR OF THY NEW YORK HERALD. Bin—The report of the [st semi m athly mort- for, in the pxpers, is 89 short, and some used therein are x0 bitter and waaten, a3 to ce me to sabmit, ander my owa name, before a keind and just public the followiag move parcic lar @xplanation concerniuy the society to witch [ de- Jong, and all those of wy countrym~n wu», by the above report, might be iisied, aus jadzo ualavor- ably of the course I pursued a+ ove of the delezates, fo the beginning, [ mast say tast in the said « I acted a3 delegite of a society which Stands in the most intimste connection with the revolutionnry elements of Europe, which is de- pendent on the universal European committees, and holds on to certain xpecial peiuciples, which could Rot uer would not be givea up by it. ft. was, therefore, not intended «0 syeak of Poles as indi: viduals, or of ail these of Polish or any uthe tious ity, who have become already watural aod, consequeaty, should use and’ deend their citizenship for the bearilt of that nationality of which they rightially are an integral part, The subject represented was a corpuration, which, inasmuch as ev true citizen respects the im stitutions of'the United States, who cond not take pst in the domestic political affairs of America, and bad no intention to do 60. Wuere the ple is legislative, without any open restraiut, as here— Where the 9p intment of ollixers, (for the exeru- tive pape soi tne highest to the lowest, depends x ub Of the natwon—where the coutrul of the pt os ‘aleft to the people, (us the daily | eritice of the journals assert,) there the people are e@overeign, +y4 in their riguts, and intangible. To amend the defects of an edifice, to alter ite form, or to or to pull down the wnole stracsure and re- the same, is the right of the proprietor, but — the visiter or transient inhabitant. e agitate gnly aguinst despot'sm; we are willing and prompt oe ate jor the freedom of all oppressed Rations in the world, but we respect a republic—we Tespect the rights of a ole people. what every Lonnataral fouivithiel is per- Mitted to do privately—viz.: w oppose all possible an actual abuses, intrigues, corraption and in- bran in public affairs, by promoting intelligeace mrans ef words and writings—is ansoubtedly a > eee of every no uvalized Poles he ohas louys to the citizen «nly of tuiss vereiga Ration, this our corpuration, as such, acvording to as pai tieular and special tendencies and duties, does 10t claim. We Poles also have had oar home—we have been rebbed of it by foreign despotic invaders. Poland ag ail Europe groan now under the oppression of must terrible despotixm; but we never give up gar rights to our own Lome; we bope for the per- hops soon approachiog redemption of all the ov- cee nutions; and, therefore, as a corporation, we +trictly in ‘accordance with our statutes first, au 3 above all, towards Europe. Phis is the true waning of what I, in the name @f the Polish Demowratio Society, did say in the last meeting fraukly, bat with ull due reapect to- wards the conveotion. Of this I complaio, that dar @orporstion has been charged in the published re- prt rather indelicately with deplorabl: ignorance @. the effairs of America. This is the reason why eur society is bitterly accused as not willing to be Bata: alized. We certainly have no objection to become citizens of the United States, just because we honor mst highly the institutions of this free country; and we shali, as true citizens of America, certain! ly sapp wt to the best of our ability the welfare of this sove- reign nation if an unfortunate combination of politi- eal circumstances in Europe compels us tolook for @yermanent existence here. But who can blame ws fer loving our pative coantry.ia whose early ration we believe, and on who-e account we wish for no other home? Wh» can blame us for geing first to the support of our own country and other eppreesed vations of Europe to redeen them hd wera and deed. with blood pity life? Who can us for bel eg our first thoughts and steps to that paint where despotism and Jesuitism spread with dreadful strides, and might become dangerous even to the United States of America? » So much for my justification. I cheerfaily sub- wait my caze to a just public, and shall enter no fur- ther into polemics. Dna. L. Szraczany. New You, Jul Obituary. DEATH OF THE PATRIARCH JOHN eurre. Rr m the Deseret News, May 2: for the departure of one mighty spirit has png ceased sounding in our ears, cre we are called upem.to anpounce the departare of another anble spirit, who has Jaid down a frail body to wvst awhile, and passed behind the vei! to shake hands and ice with hia brothers Joseph, Asanel and hews, Joseph and rum, and ‘he faithful of aleaen, é Jonny Suits, Patriarch of the Chureh of J.sus Ohitet of Latter Saints, after a severe illzess of me month, died at his residence in this city, at ten minetes pest 11 o'clock P. 31., on the 23d inst. There was consiterable activity at the first board to day in all the leading speculative stocks. Cumber- Jand was the favorite with buyers, and most of the trane- actions were for cash. This is, without doubt, the most Promising stock on the Met. Tt has a wide margia for improvement, and the probability is that it will be sooner covered than any other on the list of equal ex- tent, It was quite evident to-day that the public mind bad partially recovered its former tone and elasticit-> ‘he improvement in prices for fancy stocks, and the purchases—not only for cash, but on time, sellers’ option—rhew more eonfidence in the future and in the reeuperstive energies of the stock market generally. ‘There is stil) a germ of conddence left, notwithstanding the shock the present system of credit received by the cevelopements of the past week, and we trust it will be carefully fostered until it again gets sufficient strength to sustain itself. At the first beard to day, Canton Cov J pany advanced 3 per cent; Nicaragua Transit, 3; Oum- derland Coal, 3; Erie Railrosd, 1. The rive in Erie Railroad is a matter of sone surprise, for it is pretty generally believed that the next break down will be in thet stock. We do not anticipate an expose similar to ‘hat in the New Haven, but we believe the concern to be rotten, root and branch, and that an explosion cannot be fer off. Any improvement in the market value of the stock cannot therefore be otherwise than tempo- rary. There may be yet a few more inflations in the stock; the bulls and bears may bave a few more contests in the game over this fancy, before it is closed, but when the sustaining power is taken away it will come down qith g crash that will annihilates greater per cent of the pre- sent market value ef the stock than New Haven or Harlem has experienced. Holders of the stock do not appear to be aware of the position of the company’s affairs, and ‘asa general thing, have no more apprehension of any- thing oceurring to depreciate its market value than the bolders of New Haven Railread stock bad the day before the grand denouement. New York Central Railroad stock hngers along in the neighborhood of par, and it ap- pears to be difficult to move it much either way. The Loard of management have determined upon a dividend of four jer cent, and whatever may be wanting in the net income to meet the dividend, will, of course, be made up with funds from some other source, The con- struction account of these large coucerns never will be loved, and it is therefore easy enourh, so long as they can borrow money to make up any defic eney in the net revenve ‘rom earnings. Reading Railroad rules very low, The company nevet have deve a larger or more profitable business than this year, and its dividends will be at Teast the same as brretofcre, leaving. of course, » greater sur- plus. Notwiths’onding this, tho market value of the stock is lower now than we have known for many mouths, and it appears to us that it is unwarrantably depreciated; if a0, it s 3 good purchase at present prices. After the adjournment of the board the following sales of stocks were made at auction by Simeon Draper:— 20 shares Washington Fire Insurance Co... 20 do. Commonwealth Fire Insurance Co. 50 do, Third Avenue Railroad Co........ 50 do. North River Mining and Quarrying Co. 22 do. Little Miami Ra'lrad Co...
