~ he Detter in our local financial affairs. _ Mhousand tons. On Thursday, 1,445 tons were brought FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. HONEY MARKET. Sunpay, July 2--6 P. M. ‘Daring the past week the stock market has been pretty | “uniform, as fares prices are concerned. The amount of business transacted has fuctuated considerably, but on | ‘te whole has been quite large. The money market hae , et improved much in fact, notwithstanding the cal- culations relative to the distribution of a large sum | from the sub-treasury, and the probability is that little or.no benefit will be derived from that movement. ‘Bvents have occurred of » character calculated to offset twfull any improvement which might otherwise have Produced by such a depletion of the government ‘twensury. Public confidence has been seriously shaken “by the’ suspensions which have been recently reported ; od in the face of such things, and :he steady shipment wf specie, it would be unwise to expect any change for ‘The stock mar- het, always over sensitive in times of doubt and G@atiust, must continue depressed, giving those ‘who have the means and the nerve good opportu- wiities to make advantageous investments. Notwith- wtanding the difficulties which now surrround cer- tain clasees, the great interests of the country are ing sound, prosperous condition, and sooner or later stocks vepresenting works of public improvements, and the im- Dortant branches of industry will come up again and semmard prices corresponding more closely with those eurrent twelve months since. The suspension alluded to yesterday may affect seriously the progress of some of eur railroad enterprises, for the firm was extensively en- feegedin contracts. It is also possible that a large a@mount of stock in certain companies may be forced ‘upon the market, and temporarily depress it to an un- warrantable extent. We have not learned the actual cha- wacter of the failure; but we trust it may be less disas- teous than such events usually prove. ‘fue Nicaragua Transit Company have declared a divi- @ond of three per cent, or three dollars per share, on its sapital stock, payable on the 15th inst. The books will lose on the 8th, and open on the 1éth inst, The compa- By are sbout issuing a report to the stockhollera, which will be ef the most satisfactory character. The gross earnings of the company for the six months ending June 30, 1854, have been about $860,000, After paying operating expenses up to that time, and the di end of three per cent, there will be left in bank and fn the hands of agents about $140,000. Up to the Jat of January, 1854, the net earnings of the company were appropriated to the payment of old indebtedness, to the purchase of new steamers, &c., &c. We do not know @hoexact amount paid out for such purposes, but it has Been upwards of half a million of dollars, Tho present business of the company authorizes the expectation of a dividend of six per cent for the six months ending the Ast of January next. ‘The coal tonnage of the Cumberland Company for the week ending Saturday, July 1, will figure up nearly eight @own; and on Friday, 1,531 tons were braught down, making an aggregate of 2,976 tons for two days. We have not seen the returns for other days of the week, hut understand they will not vary much from those of “Bbarsday and Friday. This will, no doubt, be consoling ¢-t0 those who are attempting to show, by the most ab- ‘ward stories, that this company is in danger of an- wibilation from the Legislature of Maryland. We ‘are sorry that they cannot make out a better case, just for the excitement of the thing. The bears ‘are usually more fortunate in their investigations than they have been in this case. The Cumberland Company aust be ina strong and sound condition when nothing an be found against it but the possibility that it has wot fulfilied to the letter the conditions of its charter, as vegards production of coal. The attempt to injure the @ompany by such ridiculous statements is really not worth noticing. We refer the bears concerned in getting up these stories, to the weekly report of coal shipped wince April last. That isthe only consolation we can af- ford them. There is nothing going on in any other stocks ef the slightest interest or importance. Harlem may be a card for the bulls in a few days, and New Haven may each points where it would be safeto buy. We cannot ‘expect much movement in prices for Erie, for the present, ‘The outward movement of «pecie last week was much moailer than anticipated, as will be seen by the annexed matement :— SmpréEnts oF SPECIE FROM THE Port or New York.
