haba AND QOMIERCIAL. MONEY MARKER. Weoxray, June 21—6 P, M. ‘There was a slight reaction in the stock market to-day The movement at the opening was actively upward, but it grew Weaker at the close. At the first board, Cumber™ yend coal advanced 1 per cent; Nicaragua Transit, 4; N.Y. Centra) bonds, 4; Canton Co., 4; Hudson River Railroad, %(; Reading Railroad, %4; Erie Railroad, %. Michigan Southern Pailroad declined 1 percent. There wore large transactions in Erie, buyers’ option; and ig ‘the bears are uot careful they will find themselves too short for comfort. At present prices speculators wil, buy without any regard to the actual value of the stock; and tbis may not only arrest the downward” movement. but put up prices. i valve entirely upon its merits, it would be selling now for Jess (ban fifty per cent; but it has been held so largely by speculators, and has been the football for both bulls and bears so long, that it has uow an artificial value, wheb fluctuates freyuen tly ¢ fifteen per cent in as many days. The bears may make a great mistake in fol owing Erie down much farther, I he If Erie stock had depended for market | | Blankets are notin request. may turn upon | | totlons, and trouble them exce The reaction to-day was pre al; bot we have ‘no idea that | h will be perma er (auey stocks have been for | sometime steadily settling down, then edmes a pause, a fil, a heavy, inactive period, whea no one seems po el anda dull reased state of things | prevails, which it appears as though all speculative syirit was deai—ay though another excite- ment infancy stocks was utterly outof the question. Wall street becomes deserted by outsiders, aud the enormous urities rests ia the bands of those litile able to carry After a while some parti- cular fancy »ther will soon follow, and so Gn until we find an active movement going on and speculation sgain prevalent. These excitements appear and disappear Without any real cause, Fancy stocks go wp and own, no one kuows why or wherefore, and no but speculators care, The decline which has been pid for some days past will not continue much we ger; but the depreciation will become chronic, and it will be very dificult to get up another inflation. The ypersent depression will be conlrmed by the growing dis- oad of unproductiy it. will take a start, ou Be frost in the public mind, aad those who have been sought with productive stocks iu hand will have to con- teot themselves with {heir diviiends, but those who have been so unfortunate as to hold unproductive fancies at high prices had better carry them at moderate sasri- fives, with the hope of ultimately making up their losses. it is pretiy certain that the stock market cannot present & moregloomy aspect than at this moment. It matters hithe what may be the stateof the money market, or ‘the position of commercial affairs, the decline in stocks bas about reached its minimum. We speak of prices geverally. We cannot answer for certain railroad stocks which have no real value, but it is our impression hat buyers at current rates, on sixty and ninety days, will make money by a rise within phat time. The steamship Canada, at Halifax from Liverpool, brings one weeks later intelligence from Europe. The pews possesses no interest, ana does not appear to be, 80 far as we can judge by the telegraphic despatches, of the slightest importance. Breadstufts were lower and cotton higher, but the variations in quotations were trifling. Consols bad declined a fraction. We have no details re- garding financial affairs, and cannot, therefore, speak aiviredly. It is reported that the Bank of England had increased its bullion in hand. This is just the reverse to what we have anticipated, and doubt its truth. Po- tically, the advices do not differ from those received by the last balfa dozen arrivals. The Chemical Bank has declared a dividend of six per sent. The Providence and Woreester Railroad Company a semi-annual dividends of four per cent. The amount received at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of the United States for the port of. New York, this day, June 21, 1954, were $79,030; amount paid out, $85,992 09, leaving a balance on hand of $8,982,872 28. The current operations of the Treasury Department on Monday the 19th of June, were as follows :— For the redemption of stocks........+. ..++ For the payment of other Treasury debts. [This sum was to supply » deficiency in the Post Office Department, appropriated by the wet of May Sist, 1854.) The bears are hammering Wilmington pretty hard, with a fair pros- pect of reducing the market value, unless some of its friends come forward and support it. Dividend stoc are geverally heavy. Worcester declined to 9654 ex-div éend; Fitchourg, 8614 asked; Eastern, sales at 7724 diy en; Boston and Providence, 8034 div. on, payable Oct. | with interest. Northern declined to 4034, under a foread male of afew shares, but rallied again and sold at ‘1, seller six months, the same being bid regular at tue elose. Western was in de: 4, at 98 bid, div. on, with- out sales. Copper shares were ore active, with an im provement in Minnesota, North Western and Copper Falls. Dana and Winthrop declined. Land stocks are beavv, and sell at reduced rates.’” The Delaware, Lackawana and Western Railroad Com pany bas called for a further instalment of fifteen per went., payable on the Ist of July, at the Phoenix Bank in this city. The Managers have resolved to pay the 8. ck holders, on the 10th of July next, interest at the rate of six per cent. per annum, to be computed to Jun» 30, 1854, on all stocks issued or instalments received pre: vious to the Ist January last, from December 31, 1853, and in instalments received during the present year, from the dates of the respective payments, where no instal- ments which have been called for remain unpaid.
