MONEY MARKET. Suxpay, June 4—6 P. M The tendency of the stock market during the past \ week Shoe deen downward, and quotations current at the | close yesterday, show a preity general decline. ‘Doe | fluctuations lately have been to some extent, and both | the bulls and bears bave bad, at times, a turn in their | favor. The recent rise in Cumberland and Nicaragu’, was not well managed on the part of holders. Pri oo, wore carried up too far and too fast, and the effe’ ¢ wag to bring out a great deal of stock, which otherw’ 69 would have rested quietly in the hands of outsiders. There has been no change im the money market of = nature calcu- lated to foree stocks upon the my.rkst, and those who have realized have been induced to do so to secures profit. In this they were wire, as the result has shown. ‘The Dank returns last wee’ were far from being satisfac- tory, which undoubtedly had a depressing influence, bat ‘hnd there been no great inflation in the fancies, we pro- Badly should not have seen any material variation in prices. The bank returns for this week, will, without doubt, be somewhat similar to those of last, in all the | departments except specie, and in that we look for @ falling off. The exporta of specie have, with: in the past few days, been very heavy, and we see no probability of any let up. We shall not have another California steamer for # week or #0, and in the meantime our supply must be sensibly dimished. We have heard lately several rumors of failures, but cannot find any foundation for them. The suspensions which have occurred in other cities may have given rise to these reports. ‘The amount of specie exported from this port last week was as annexed. — SnTVAKNTS OF SPECIE FROM THR be or New Yore. whose mysterious departure from New York, when it was wall known there were Rassian officersin New York coprreged for privateers had been noted in all the city papers, had announced her arrival by the capture of a French Ly almost within aight of ‘the sacred shores of Great Britain. Of course such g report kindled the greatest alarm and excitement all along the coast. Armed ships were sent in every direction, to chase and captare the presumptaouws pirate. It was seriously thought of to send off a oe despatch to Charley Napier, for some of hia steamers, At the last news the excitement still continued. There is no selling where or when it willend. In the meantime, the Grapeshot lics snugly enough at the Belize, looking as inuoceut and contented as a young inl on a Mi day, and her stalworth captain eats nae umabo an drinks his olaret at the City Hotel, more contentedly than Ree Cees Napier on the I Duke of Wellington, or Admiral Dundas before Odessa. Slavery Now Existing In Nebraska. [From the National Era.) In any ordinary case I should be very loth to ex- pose a brother missionary ; but the case now before ws is one of so monstrous a character as to forbid Jonger silence. It may not be generally known that there is in this Territory an extensive missio! establish- ment, under the direction and control of the Metho- dist Church South, at which slaves have long been kept to do the ‘menial cervice of the mission. ‘These slaves have been kept here in utter disregard of the Missouri aay by which slavery was forever prohibited here. It would seem, to a candid thinker, a difficult matter to conceive a grosser inconsistency than to ge forth to preach Christianity to the heathen, and to Saye laves along to assist in the glorious work. Thus, le they would hold up the gospel to the heathen with one hand}; with the other they bind fast the yoke of bondage on the neck of the poor slave. How can they show any consistency in such a monstrous absurdity? On what grounds should one portion of ‘the human family be degraded and heathenized, to elevate and enlighten another? But to come nearer to tne point—Thomas John- gon, the superintendent of this slaveholding mission, by adroit management, was elected, last fall,a dele- gate to Congress from this Territory, or, rather, was sent to Washington to attend to matters pertaining to the various tribes of Indians here, preparatory to selling their lands and organizing a Territorial gov ernment. He has been at Washington during the Present session of Congress, where he has been using ‘all his influence to secure the passage of Douglas's Nevraska bill; and he has not scrup!ed to make un- fair statements to promote his ends. He is using his 1 tmost endeavors to induce those Indians to sell out their lands entire—a thing whioh they are very unwilling to do, and which would be very disastrous to their ‘est interests, They have emigrated, to make room for the white man, until they can go no further. There are no lands suitable for them. Most of the vast region between this and the Rooky Mountains is a barren decert, and wholly unfit for caitivation. These Indians are iapeosd to sell all the land they do not need; but they wish to be allowed ¢o remain here in eng aud quiet, for they know not where to go. But Christian missionary would send them awa, does he care whither? It is believed that he inten to secure to himself a fat ion of Indians’ lands. And he w lant saver yes, has introduced it here, ia violation of the laws ofthe land. And yet, we are to believe that he is a minister of the gospel of Christ. Friends of Freedom! Help! Tt isan evil of magnitude that aggrogations of capital for the corstruction of all great works of internal im- provement almost necessarily fall into hands inoompe- tent, and emincntly unfit to control them. The stock of such roads is generally taken at firat by men of liberal tempers but scanty means, who, in conjunction with public subscriptions by cities and States, press on until their means are exhrusted. The road almost finished is without value, wanting, perhaps, an additional capi- talof twenty per cent for its completion. It is at this stage of ite affairs that the future owners of the road are installed into power. The men who originated and carried the scheme almost through, are gen- erally forced to abandon their investments for a song; and moneyed men come in for the speculation. As a gereral thing, those men are unfit for their position. Their money has been their only qualification. Their lives have been spent in sordid gains, and the established principle of their action is a further and a greater accu- mulation. In the hands of such men, enterprises foand- ed in patriotism and based upon enlarged statesmanship, are perverted, and become instruments of public specu- lation and boundless peoulation. Such has been the course of events in the history of many improvements in this State, and doubtless in other communities, Whether this has been the history of the Baltimore and Obio Railroad we do not pretend to know; but the com- parison we have frejuently instituted between the opera- tions of the Eriv road and of that road disclose such curi- ous results that we lay the facts before the public in hopes of eliciting explanation. The following table pre- sents the comparative business resources of the two roads:— New York anp Exte anp BALTIMoR® AND O10 Raitnoans. The Erie road overdoes it largely in the details of ita operations. The market value ef the Baltimore and Ohio railroad has fluctuated strangely and unac- countably. In a single year its stock has been as high as and under 55; it now ranges about 60. continues to be, the subject of stock gambling, and man in the mansgement of its affairs are charzed with partici- pating in the game. It ia not alone in its great superiority in amount of roai, When the compariron extends to the sira- working expenses, = lamentable contrast is presented. double track, besides eighty miles of sidings or tarn- track and sixty-nine miles of sidings. The Erie road has been graded to a maximum of sixty feet to the mile. For a distancd of 309 miles it has no grade higher than five feet to the mile in the direction of the greatest trade. The Paitimore road, on the other hand, encounters grades as high as 116 feet to the mile. The curvatures on the Erio road are moderate, and timty-four per cént of its whole distance is in straight lines. The radius of curves on the Baltimore road comes down as low as 600 feet, when we are told 1,000 ‘oot is the minis um radius allowed on railroads for ‘useful and safe operations. This great inferiority of structure tells fatally on the work, in expenses of the two roads. ‘We shall not compare the working expenses, by resorting to the financial statements published by either road. ‘These statements are sometimes moulded to suit the stock market. We will simply compare the ma- chinery of the two reads, On the Baltimore road, in 1653 there were 196 locomotives, most of them of th. largest class. There were in all 3,484 care. We umiler stand there are now 227 locomotives on the road, and others are buikling. The Erie road in 1863 worked 150 locomotives, and half the number of cars. With this dimi: ished power and cost, in consequence of its better structure, it was enabled te carry five times as many passencers, and fifty por cent more tonnage (more than half the tonnage of the Paltimore read being cual, aud pas-ing over half its length,) over an increased length of road. The actaal cost of the two roads when the Balti more road ia perfected—ita tunnels arched, its track doubled 40 Piedmont, and tts motive power enlarged as now contemplated—notwithstanding the better constric- tion of the Erie road amd ite greater length, (cighty-four wiles.) wil be vory nearly the same. The coat of the Feltimore vead, when Gniabed, ij set down.at more thaa $26,000,000, We ase amace that this comparison will not bo well ro- ceived to Taltimore; buteven there it will do good. {¢ will Gispel dolesive errors impressed for epseulative views en public credulity.
