FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET, Mowpay, May 29-6 P. M. The stock market opened buoyant and active this morning. The leading fancies were in demand, at be'ter prices; and there appears to be no let up to the specala tive feeling. The favorite to-day was Nicaragus Transit ‘and all our anticipations are in a fair way of being res Aired, The advance of 3 per cent at the first board to- day must have startled the bears, and reminded them forcibly of our predictions, made some time since. The plique of capitalists who made up a large pot to sell short on in the tat twenty-five per cent can find little consolati present state of things. Under the management of (Charles Morgan, Esq., the of the Nicaragua Tran- Bit Company have been extricated from the confusion ‘and embarrassments which almost overwhelmed the concern under previous administrations, and from a Tosing, uncertain condition, 1 has been made one +--—puctation compa. most produc were Ps th ps en hey. Mr. Morgan has showa his BS.uence in the position and future proiitableness of the concern by investing largely in its tock, at prices ranging from the highest to the lowest points, and he will soon realize some reward for the judgment and shrewdness exhibited in the management. The bears have already suffered seriously im Cumberland and Nica- ragua, but we see them still putting out contracts, buy- ere’ option, apparently regardless of consequences. There may be occasionally reactions that wil! help the shorts slightly, but they cannot look for any important change in their favor until the present movement has expended itself. There are undoubtedly very many hold- ers of both Nicaragua and Cumberland who would sell at large profits, and perhaps many if they could realize Sost and changes; but the bears cannot depend upon any aid from those sources at present. There is siill a wide margin for improvement, and as the advance in Cumber- Jand will rot for the future be so rapid as it has been, from ghe fact that it 1s more difficult to carry on the inflation Pt bighthan at low prices, it will be a longer time in Beaching the points proposed by different operators. otwithstanding the reported fino prospects of both the Pumberland Coal and Nicaragua Transit Companies, and Mo little doubt that exists in the minds of most holders, Jrlative to a dividend at an early day, there are partie Who would be satisfied to get out clearand be relieved from the apprebensions and anxieties which have, Mhroughout the last long periods of depreasion, beset ‘hem. It is exceedingly difficult, upon a rapidly rising smarket, to fix upon points to realize. As a general thing, outside speculators for an improvement buy during an ad- wanoe and «ell during adecline. They do not seem to know when to sell, and, by holding for alittie higher price, find the market turn upon them, and before they Jhave made up their minds what to do, there isa margin | against them. This, fortunately, is not the case with all, and those who are satisfied with moderate profits make ‘the moat money in the long run. There was considerable activity to-day in all the most permanent railroad stocks. Erie, Harlem, and Reading improved a fraction. New York Central Railroad ‘has Aately boen much neglected, and the depression has be- ome chronic. It is the general opinion that it is yet selling at much above ils actual value, Parker Vein is steadily settling down. It might be considered a pretty wafe purchase at current rates, for the loss per share would not be very great if it went entirely out of sight. ‘There is, we believe, but one defunct coal stock on the list at present, and that is the Phenix. The others, which have from time to time made some excitement in bo street, are still in existence, and for aught we know to the contrary, in active operation. At the first board Llinols Central Bonds advanced 34 per cent; privilege, Go., 4; Delaware and Hudson, }%; Canton Company, i; Nicaragua Transit, 3; New York Central Railroad, 4; Norwich and Worcester, 34; Erie Railroad, 34; Harlem, 34; Reading Rallroad, %{; Cleveland and Toledo Railroad, 34; Hudson River Railroad, 3. Cumberland fluctuated slightly from the opening to the close. At the opeuing it ‘was firm at Saturday’s prices, but fell off a fraction to- ‘wards the clone. The sales amounted to more than six thousand shares, At the recond board the market took just the turn we anticipated, particularly in Cumberland. After a riso of ten and twelve percent, spread over a period of no more than six or eight days, a reaction could not have been prevented. It is somewhat strange that we have ot had one before this. An advance of such magnitude, Ab such a short time, is calculated to induce many hold- Bra to realize. Those who come in at the bottom of the gnarket have, to a certain extent, availed themselves of Bn opportunity to make # profit of ten per cent, equal to B¥net profit of thirty-three per cent on the in- westment, This has put a large amount of tock on the market, and for the timo de pressed prices. The great movement has, however, Zaken such a shape that its course must be onward, and any check can be but temporary. After the board closed this afternoon thirty-eight per cent was bid, andit was in demand at that price. Nicaragua Transit fell back a little at the second board, which gave the bears an op portunity to come in and make up some of their shorts. It wass chance too good to lose. All the other fancies advanced a fraction, particularly Erie Railroad, which pold freely at 7034 a 71 per cent. We have received a copy of the Merchants’ and Bank- ery’ Almanac for 1854, published by J. Smith Homans, Enq., at No. 70 Wall street. It contains @ list of the Danks in every State and city of the Union, with the capital of each, calendar and chronology of important Ainancial events, and any quantity of other matter of in- Zerest to capitalists, bankers and brokers. It is a valua- bile book of reference. After the adjournment of the board the following sales ‘were made at auction by A. H. Nicolay:— $5,000 Cleveland and Pittsburg Railroad 7’s.
