There was perfect deluge of good news to-day, and consequently there was agreat rush to sell stocks. An advance of some importance was anticipated; but al] were disappointed, and holders may as well make up thei, minds for lower prices, after the experience of to-day. From the North, South, Bash amd West, the advices were of the most favorable character. From every quarter in- | telligence poured in upon us, of a nature which, in or- inary times, would have put prices up several per cent ; but under existing circumstances, the rise has been all, or even more, than it should have been. The fact that consols have advanced % per cent, that flour has risen one shilling per barrel, that cotton was firm and in fair demand, that about two millions of dollars have been received from Calffornia, that ten millions of dollars will be drawn out of the sub-treasury by the Gadsden treaty, that our domestic exchanges are in favor of this city, is notsufficient to draw in outside purchasers of fancy stocks at present prices. These movements, on the surface, do not show tne real state of things be- low. There are causes operating at home and abroad which must sooner or later produce an important change, perhaps for the worse, in financial af- fairs, There is in the public mind a fecling of appre- hension relative to the future, which must act unfavora- bly upon the market. Fancy stocks were slightly better to-day; but they are merely tossed from the hands of one broker to another—sometimes a little up and sometimes a little down. There are no purchasers for investment, . but on the contrary stocks are accumulating in the strect. Money is not so abundant, and the demand is evidently increasing. We have everything to fear from a stringent money market, and the indications are cer- tainly towards a greater scarcity than we have had for some time past. The large shipments of specie within the past week or two have been unexpected, and the probability is that they will- continue. Tho drain upon the Bank of England for specie for the Continent cannot be arrested, and remittances from this side will be required to the fullest extent te fill the vacuum. We shall watch the movements in the money market with a good deal of interest, for on that depends the fate of the fancies. The times are decidedly out of joint. What little confidence there is left bangs by a very slender thread. The New York, Providence and Boston (Stonington) Railroad Company have declared a dividend of three and one half per cent. The Bank of the State of Georgia has declared a semi- annual dividend of five per cent. The introduction of one or two mew members to the Mining Board has created unusual activity in the mining fancies, The sales of Gardiner Gold: reported at the doard to-day, amounted to 2,100 shares. The warrants entered on the books of the Treasury De- partment, Washington, on the 24th inst., were:— For the redemption of stock........ $63,187 77 For payment of other Treasury debits . 876 00 Covered into the Treasury from customs 62 56 Covered into the Treasury from miscellaneous sources. 256 90 For the War Department 68,601 06 For re-paying for the War Tepariment 18,611 06 For the Interior Department 26,278 35 The receipts of the Panama Railroad Company in March, on thirty-one miles of road, were as follows:— Passengers, $56,070; freight, $10,000—total, $66,070. The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad Company have ssued a circular to the shareholders, proposing to raise their capital stock one half, or from $2,800,000 to $5,200,- 000, to wit twenty-five per cent on the present stock, or, $700,000,to issue on or after the Ist of June, and to be paid for in instalments before the Ist of August, and then-20 per cent upon the whole, or $760,000 as a gratu- ity—making $4,200,600 upon which dividends are to be paid after the first of August next. This will give 208 miles road, paying at a rate of earnings, per mile, 10 per cent greater than last year. $1,225,000 gross, and £472,000 net of the running expenses, and interest upon $2,000,000 debt are deducted ; being 10 per cent on the advanced amount of stock, with a contingent remainder of $52,000. It will without doubt be very gratifying to the stockholders to get the additional stock in the shape of a dividend, and those who realize not only on this new issue, but on the old, at once upon its appearance in the market, will pocket all the profit. The Galena and Chicago Railroad Company are following in the footsteps of all the old railroad corporations in the country. This continual increase of stock is the bane of all companies. It is not confined to railroads, but 1s quite general. The capital, in this way is run up, year after year, un- til it finally gets to be so large that the dividend earned amounts to only a amall per cent, frequently less than the average rate of interest, and the stock sinks to points below par. All the Western railroad companies are actively engaged in issuing new stock, and the actual value of both old and new is greater now than it ever will be again. In conjunction with these remarks we give a statement showing the progress and depreciation of the Fitchburg Railroad of Massachusetts:— Boston anp FrrcupunG RaILRoaD. po ig rings. es. Stock. 1845....81,40 6, 801 $208, 05 $78,338 131 8 286,645 117,477 123, — 890,736 161,433 117 — — 480,265 286,046 109 — 493,060 255,160 106 = 551,607 257,083 109 — 516,012 810,376 11 _ 674,574 341,787 108 3,716,870 656,659 411,026 4 This shows the rise, progress and position of this com- pany. At one time it was considered the mest prosper- ous and profitable railroad company in New England. The first year of its'operations the stockholders received ten per cent dividend. Since it has dwindled down to about six per cent per annum. In 1845 its running ex- penses were only about thirty-eight per cent, while in 1858 they were nearly sixty-six per cent. The history of the Fitchburg will answer for that of every other rail- road in the country. They will all be written in the some way, and the same result will appear. The rail- ronds of New England have all had their day as produc- tive investments. The railroads of the West are now at the very pinnacle of their prosperity, and from this time forward they will gradually fall off in market and intrin sic value. We much doubt if any one of them has ever earned the dividends declared, and the rapidity with which all are increasing their capital stock, the time is not far distant when they will more than double their cost, and reduee the net earnings below a dividend-pay- ing point. The Pottsville Miners’ Journal of the 22d inst. gives the following account of the coal trade of that region:— The quantity sent by railroad this week is 36,155 01; by canal, 17,274 01—for the week, 53,429 02 tons. Total by railroad, $20,237 06 tons, against 40 406,937 12 tons; do. by canal, 119,831 06 tons, against 87, rage 01 tons, to same period last year. The reat snow storm checked the business about a day and a half during the week, which has curtailed the shipments to some extent. They are, however, heavier than they were for the corresponding week last year. ‘The demand for coal continues as brisk as ever, and the markets to the East are all short. Freight from Richmond to Boston continues very high, ging from $276 to$3 perton. This is unusual at this season of the year. The Delaware and Hudson coal trade has not yet commenced, We can mine as much coal in Schuylkill county as the railroad and canal can carry away. The mining facilities of this ‘‘dilapidated”’ region are considerably ahead of the ability of the trans- portation companies leading to Philadelp The Cumberland Minera’ Journal of the 224 inst., gives the following acfount of the coal trade of that district :— Statement of coal transported over the Mount Savage Railroad during the week ending on Saturday, 15th April; also, the amount sent by each company for the year be- ginning January 1, 18 To Railroad. As most of these stocks are consider- ed fancies of the first order, they have for some time past attracted the attention of speculators, and the balls and bears can post themselves up from the above statement on the movements of their respective favorites. We have no important changes to notice in the dry goods traffic. The demand for seasonable fabrics is live- lier; but this is not strange, for with the approaching re- sumption of canal navigation was naturally expected an increased inquiry from the country trade, who have ab- stained from entering the market boldly until the latest moment, while being occupied in closing out their own old stocks at fair prices. This has placed them in a posi- tion to make a larger and better selection of fresh pro- f* ductions without difficulty. Local dealers, too, are more competent and willing to purchase desirable articles, which command satisfactory rates, as they are not over abundant, These are the only essentially encouraging tures inthe business.
