atthe meeting in May. If it should be holden im July, a much larger attendance could be se- eared; or the candidates might be nominated | two or three months before election, and their | names transmitted to non-resident members, for approval or rejection, as the case might be. The | @irectors, fifteen in number, do not seem to be interested in the fund, as only two of them were present at the festival. The directors are all actors, The above statements give an answer to the | public inquiry—why were there no more actors | at the fund dinner? The Dramatic Fund pro- | perly conducted, properly managed, and pro- perly secured, would be a valuable institution. Without the unanimous aid and sympathy of | the persons for whose protection it was estab- lished, its sphere of usefulness will certainly be very much contracted. There isanother society | of actors called the “ Actors Order of Friend- | ship,” a mutual protection and benevolent so- ciety. Its operations are secret but it is said that many actors are affiliated with it, and that they prefer it to the Fund, as it is composed of actors alone. Panty Meanners.—Some stir has been lately made about the celebrated Hulsemann letter, ene of the anti-slavery sheets in this city having attempted to embroil Mr. Everctt with | the friends of Mr. Webster, by suggesting that the former was really its author, and was about to claim the honor of the performance. There- upon other journals undertook to prove that My. Webster and not Mr. Everett wrote the aener; at and & COiwove:, ny ensued into which the naines of several puvate individuals were very unnecessarily dragged. In our opinion, itis not of the slightest consequence whose pen twaced the Hulsemann letter. We are happily not without such memorials of the late Mr. Webster as prove that his intellect was fully equal to the production of such a document; and we have equal evidence that Mr. Everett, whether he wrote it or no, is quite capable of wach a performance. Both might have written the Hulsemann letter. To inquire at the present @ay what share Mr. Everett had in the work elaimed by his friend, is simply idle; to make the inquiry. with a view of leading people to suppose that Mr. Everett is attempting to raise | his own character at the expense of his friend’s, is ‘meanness of which none but the meanest of the anti-slavery journals could have been gallty. Rup Rervsiican Frovrisnes.—George San- ers, who appears to enjoy his rejection by the | Senate, on the same principle, we presume, as the old lady’s eels enjoyed the process of skin- ning, is being elevated to the dignity of a politi- eal martyr by his friends Ledru Rollin, Maz- sini, and Kessuth. We should hardly think that the sympathy of these gentlemen was Mkely to benefit Mr. Sanders. It is doubtful whether any one of the three understands this country or could live quietly under our institu- tions. Noisy braggarts, fanatic socialists, and Dlood-thirsty disciples of Robespierre, are no Detter suited to lead public opinion here than 0 lead insurgents in Europe. A Dreromatic Leak.—A very ingenuous at- ‘tache of the Mexican Embassy at Washington, who writes amusing and sometimes leaky let- ters to the Journal of Commerce of this city ie getting quite desperate over the Gadsden treaty. He says, in his desperation, that al though five millions are set apart in the treaty for claimants upon Mexico, not over one million will be required to satisfy them—all that are good. The Mexican legation ought to know, ‘and co, we suppose, this gentleman must be right. ‘The other four millions of the five will, there- fore, be a clear profit to the lobby jobbers in Galphin and Gardner swindles. Why don’t the Senate ratify the treaty ? Wuie Party Asonisuen.—Several of the Jeading journals of the late whig party have at Yength formally declared that it was broken up in 1852 and is now abolished. But a new and formidable opposition party, partly whig and partly democratic, is forming against the ad- ministration, which with anything like ordinary | tact and management promises to make a car- | nival like that of 1840 over the remains of Pierce and his Cabinet. Atal events the late whig party is abolished, the administration party is broken up, and the opposition hold the field. - Look at the late elections—look at Ne- braska and the Gadsden treaty. Where is the democratic party? That’s the question. Or Covrse—The dirty little White House scavenger at Washington says that “if the edi- tor of the Satanic is good, this world is wofully given to lying.” Of course it is, and has been for the last six thousand years. It is still dread- fally so, especially among the White House | scavengers, notwithstanding their toddy drink- ing and domino playing. Awful—awful. ‘Baoapway Trearne—Mise Dean.—Miss Julia Dean com. ‘menced an-engagement at the Broadway Thea‘re on Mon- day evening as Pauline, in the ‘Lady of Lyons.’? The hhouse was a good one, but it was not full. Miss Dean ‘will consult her own interest by playing some new pieces. “The Metropolitan play-goers are tired of the eternal wepotition of Paulines, Julias, Evadnes, Biancas, and so forth. Miss Dean is a good actross, and will receive the public support if she will give the people something new. Arrares in Costa Rics.—We have received our files of papers from this republic to the 224 ultimo. The intelli- gence received is unimportant. The Gaceta does not give us any news from the neigh- boring States of a later date than we have already re- ceived, The Boletin Oficial of the 16th ult. publishes a corres- pondence between the governments of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, about the prevailing rumor that a company of American citizens is being organized for the purpose of colonizing the Mosquito territory. The former is very indignant, talks about the respect due to civilized coun- tries and to the well established principles of the rights of nations, and protests inst any such scheme being carried into effect. The latter replies in the same strain, is persuaded that there is just cause for alarm, and ad- vises that the plenipotentiary Minister in Washington | be instructed to inquire into the real character of the undertaking. The government of Costa Rica, however, does not believe that the Cabinet at Washington are privy to this colonization project. At all events, it will were lend its aid and co-operation to Nicaragua in upho! ing its its rights and the integrity of its territory. = one | Naval Intelligence.
