FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Mowpay, April 3-8 P. M. ‘There was a slight improvement in the stock marke to-day, both in extent of transactions and in quotations. Nothing has transpired to give permanency to the ad- vance, and the probability is that it is merely a spasmo- Gis fluctuation, which is likely to be lost any moment. | It would not surprise us to see prices all down again to- morrow, and the market dull and depressed. At the first board to-day, New York Central bonds advanced 1 per cent; Canton Co., 4; N. J. Zinc, 4; Nicaragua Transit, 34; Cumberland Co., %; N. Y. Central Railroad, 44; Erie Railroad, %; Harlem, \; Reading Railroad, 4s; Galena ‘and Chicago Railroad, 13{. Illinois Central bonds de- clined 4 per cent; Delaware and Hudson, 44; Florence ‘nd Keyport, {. There were large transactions in Ili- nois Central bonds, principally for cash, and there was a falling off at the close on the opening price. In other railroad bonds there was not much activity, but full prices were obtained. Hudson Railroad was freely offer- ed today, and there were unusually large sales. The money market is steadily and gradually tightening. The demand for capital appears to increase as the sesson advances, instead of diminishing, as anticipated. This may be the result of s contraction of ‘the call loans of the banks, more than from any decrease in their regular line of discounts, and from the increas- ‘ing cautiousness of capitalists, growing out of the posi- tion of political affairs on the other side of the Atlantic. The worst fears are entertained relative to the effect of a general war in Europe upon the commerce and trade of the world. No one seems to have formed an opinion as ‘to the shape in which the effect will first appear, but every day is adding to the apprehensions of those who are deeply involved in commercial operations; and this is ‘the principal cause of the distrust and doubt which fill the public mind. Upon the eve of such events as the great nations of Europe are about entering upon, the “feat course is one of inactivity. By withdrawing from nancial operations as much as possible, we can look pon the approaching struggle with less fear and anxiety ato the result. There is very little doubt but that the ancial affairs of the world are upon the eve of a severe | »vulsion, and no one can tell when the first movemen’ say be made that will strike terror to the mind of every <spitalist. A general war in Europe at this period, in the nineteenth century, matter of more importance than most people comprehend, and it may lead to conse- quences fatal fora time at least, to every vital interest of each country engaged in the conflict. The Mining Board was not particularly active: Ulster was the only stock in which a movement took place; we presume it may be quoted at from 15 to 1%. North Oarolina has declined an eighth. In subjoining the bids at the board, we think it but right to say that our at- tention has been drawn to the fact that many of the bids are lower than those made at the Stock Exchange, the difference being, insome instances, as much as half a dollar a share. This is due to the fact that the bulk of operators send in their orders to the Stock Exchange, in- stead of the Mining Board. The disparity will disappear as the business of the latter increases; meanwhile, we suggest that if stocks can be bought cheaper at the Min- ing Board than at the Exchange, brokers might make a good thing of an occasional visit to Beaver street. The company is preparing to erect three Chilian mills, and has steam power enough to ‘work and ore enough to feed all three. At the bottom of all the shafts the appearance of the veins is very promis- ing; in twoof them the lode is strongly pyritic. Ina letter of 28th he adds:— { beg leave to aay that our average daily yield of gold, ith one mil, ie quite equal to our expenses. When the Srection of the ‘other sill ia completed our receipts will emore than double, as the grinding power of the new ae is much greater than that of the old; and when the hird one shall be added, the proportionate increase will e greater still. Numerous eminent shipbuilders certify , that the machines are able to saw every curve and level required in ship’s frame, with despatch, accuracy and great saving of labor and expense. We presume the company will have no difficulty in attaining the object they desire. After the adjournment of the board, the following | sales of stocks were made at auction by A. H. In the same time the amount of specie on hand has not varied four hundred thousand dollars. The circulation has been equally uniform, while the deposits have fuctu | ated more largely. What contractions and expansion: the banks have made in the item of ‘call loans,” is best known to themselves. The changes in that department cause all the changes in the money market, and until the Legislature does something to give the public some in- | sight into the movements in the banks in that particu- | lar, no benefit will result from these weekly statements. | The Ocean Bank of Newburyport has declared a divi- dend of five por cent; Merchants’ Bank, four per cent; | Mechanics’ Bank, three and a-half per cent.
