Sate of the Public Docks and Slips, and the | Lease of Castle Garden, Yosterday afternoon, according to previowsannounce pont, the leases of a portion of the Corporation docks fend sljps were put up at auction, und@@r the direction of the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund, and sold to the highest bidder, in accordance with the requirements of the new city charter, ‘The sale took place in the Superior Court room, (9 the City Hall, and was attended by as many persons as could by any possibility be squeezed into the chamber; ani it is probable that had the auction been held in 4 more com- venient place, it would have collected together nearly double the number. | The leases, instead of being for five years—the term for | be sold—were for only one which they were advertised to be Year from the drst dey of May next; the change being made in consequence of ts being confidently expected that the bill which is now before the Legislature, increas ing the present rates of wharfage, will become a law, which will render the docks and slips much more profit- able, and the leases consequently more valuable. ‘The sale occupied nearly three hours, and the greatest competition was manifested on the part of bidders, as is evidenced by the prices which some of the leases brought. Agreat number of questions were propounded to the Comptroller during the sale, all of which were readily answered, While the lease of one of the wharves was veing sold, the entrance to the slip of which is some- wha‘ obstructed, a gentleman in the crowd stated the fact CompTnoLizR—We bave nothing to do with that ORvriemMaAN—How is a vessel to be got in? ComPTRoLLER—We are here to sell the leases of the | wharves, not to give instructions as to how vessels should be hauled into or out of the slips. GxuyrizMaN—Enongh said. Two thousand dollars. Pier No. 18, North river, between Cedar and Albany streets, brought ten thousand seven hundred dollars, which enormous price was obtained in consequence of its | beings desirable steamboat landing Included in the sale was a five years’ lease from the first of May, of Castle Garden. For ten years past Messrs. French and Heiser have had this beautiful summer re- sort, on a lease from the Common Council, at two or three | thousand dollars a year, during which time the amphi- theatre has been enclosed, floors laid, galleries fitted up, stage erected, and the whole place beautifled and ren- dered one of the finest, aud inthe summer season the most pleasant, concert rooms in the country. When this was put up, the announcement elicited the undivided at- tention of the crowd, and the bidding commenced. Me. Heer—Three thousand dollars. A GRNTINMAN—Are the improvements to remain? ComprrouzR—Yes, sir. We have it in black and white that the present lessees are to take nothing from it but the brackets and chandeliers. Mr. Naytor—Four thousand. Mr. R. Frxwcn—Cannot the contractors for enlarging the Battery close up the passage way on the bridge? ComPprrotiER—No, sir. uparound it, but they must not obstruct the passage. Mr. 8, Roperts—Five thousand. Mr. R. Frence—Cannot the city take possession of the | Garden on giving twenty-four hours’ notice ? Comprroiixr—Yes, sir; if there is danger of the city | deing invaded, and the fort should be required for de. fence. But there is no prospect of war at present Mr. AuzN—Six thousand dollars. Conner shipped in good order and condition, on board the Sarah Sania, then | y- materials, namely, two boxes, one iron forty two packages, for the port of Panama, to be for- | warded to Sun Francisco, and there delivered to De Witt & Harrison, the libellants having paid the freight and | primage, amounting to the sum of $661 08. The vessel arrived ‘nt Panama, but the goods wore not there de- livered. ‘The vessel was detained in Panama some time, and did not arrive in San Francisco till June, 1850, when some of the boxes were missing, and the agents of the | libellants refused to accept the others, as they would be | useless when certain letters of t bet’ were not forthcoming. The value of the goods is averaged at | $11,000. For the respondents, Messrs. Evarts & E. H. On the other hand evidence {tl | der of the boxes incomplete and useless. Decision res | served Court of General Sessions. Before His Honor Judge Beebe. CONVICTED. | _ Marcu 29.—Horte Stealing.—John Riley, decent look- | ing young man, was tried and convicted of burglariously entéring the stable of John Mesler, No. 183 Mucdougal | street, and stealing from the premises a sorrel horse, valued at $100. The property was found in possession of the prisoner, who had been making the most of his booty | for the last two months, when, one day last week, a friend of Mr. Mesler’s discovered the animal in possession | of the defendant, and remembering that it had been | stolen from him, gave information of the affair to the | police, whe forthwith arrested him. The Court sen- | tenced him to two years confinement In the State prison. Burglary in the Third Degree.—William Marray, a pro- cious looking scoundrel, was convicted of burglariously | | entering the se sear store of Samuel Prichet & Co., No. 251 | Canal sreet, and stealing therefrom some segars, sogar cases, and other articles, valued altogether at $5, and | was sentenced to two years and six months conflnement in the State prison. Attempt at Grand Larceny.—John Ross, a colored indi- vidual, on conviction of attempt to steal some groceries | from the store of Thos. A. Hailey, 110 Bowery, was sen- {enced to two years and six months imprisonment in the State prison at Sing Sing. | Grand Larceny —George Cottle, « colored man, was | then placed at the bar, charged with having stolen a double barreled gun, worth $35, from W. H. Smith &Co., Nos. 2and 4 Maiden lane. Mr. Smith stated that the | prisoner acknowledged having stolen the property, and | that he had stolen goods from his store for the last two or three years, amounting in value to early $15,000, very little of which has ever been recovered. The jury in this case rendered a Verdict of guilty without Sickaaed their seats. Burglary in the Third Degree.—Napoleon Sherbet, con- victed last week of burglariously entering a boot and shoe store in Canal street, and stealing therefrom proper- ty to the amount of $40, was sent to the House of Refu; but as the authorities ‘there would not admit him, the Court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in the State Prison at Sing Sing.
