in the meantime having increased his forces) the treaty came back entirely changed, eouched in terms the most offensive to Honduras. The article providing for the payment of damages to Honduras was 80 altered as to leave Guatemala to py. or not at her discretion; and a stipulation was introduced uiring Honduras to refuse asylum to such political calles ‘as Guatemala chose to indicate, and providing, also, that all political refugees should be concen- trated in the int departments. In short, Guate- msla attempted to force Honduras into same Phious position, in respect to the right of asylum, ‘tbat Austria has attempted to coerce Switzerland. Of course, no such concession could be made con- sistently with the sovereigaty and dignity of the State, and without violating the principles enter. tained by the government. The amendments were, therefore, indignantly rejected. But, unfortunately, while these things were going on, symptoms of di ‘tent appeared in the Hondu- rasarmy. Investigations were made, and it appear- ed that Treason was at work ; persons in the interest of Guatemala had tampered with the troops, insidi- ously making use of certain partisan feelings which exist in the State, and which at this‘time, above all others, should have been allowed to slumber. The poison gone so far as to require severe re- medies; and four subordinate officers, the instru- ments rather than the principals in the affair, were tried by court martial and shot. Gen. Canaas, it is said, exerted himself in every way to save them ; but his humanity had finally to give away to the public welfare. Had the remedy proved effectaal the example might not have been regretted. The sequel, oped showed that the treason was deeper than n supposed. lt was wit ‘an inadequate force, thus demoralized, that Honduras found it-eit obliged to take the field, all efforts towards a peaceable redress of its grier- ances baving failed. Aczordingly, towards the latter end of June ‘ast, Gen. Cabanas marched upon Gua- temala, The entire department of Chiquemala was recuved without difficelty, inasmuch as the greater sof the inhabitants are more hostile than friend- ly to the oligarchy at tié head of affairs. This movement seems hardly to have been anticipated by the Guatemalan government. Having, as they sap- posed, sown the seed of discord in the Honduras army, they did not conceive it possible that Gen. Cabanas would attempt an invasion with 1,500 men. The policy of tle movement, under any circumstances, may be doubted. The first sus- mse over,.the Guatemalan government exerted fe utmost efforts to repel the invasion. A force of some 2,500 or 3,000 men was speedily got together, and marched iu the direction of Chique- mala. Gen. Cabanas, apprised of their advance, concentrated bis little ar my determined to bring affairs to a general issue on the plains of Esquipulas. This was effected in the presence of the entire Guate- malan force, which the general kept in check with a small detachment of less than four hundred men. His subsequent disposicions seem to have been well made. His main body was well posted; and en the 8th of July, the enemy appearing, he advanced with his personal guard to oj\en the battle, and draw his opponents upon his own ground. This movement, seconded by a similar one on the part of his prin- cipel officer, Gen. Lope, was admirably effected. The Guatemalan advance was completely routed. The mun body then coming up, the general fell back upon his reserve. But wnat was his surprise and mortification to find that .t had deserted him to a man without firing a shot! Treason had done its worst. Of course nothing now remained except Tet:eat. This was effected in good order, first to the froutier towns of Sinuapa and Ocotepeque, and then, day oy day, from town to town, down the valley of Sensenti to Santa Rosa. The Guatemalans, evidently surprised at their easy victory, seem to have been Airaid to advance, except with their main body, out- uumbering some tenfold the little remnant with Cabanas. It was not until ‘he 20th of July that they acvanced upon Santa Rosa, which was at once aban- doned by the inhabitants, with such of their effects as they could carry with them. Gen. Cabanas also fell beck on the little village of San José to meet rein- forcementa from the Department of Ste. Barbara. ‘The Guatemalans entered Slanos on the afteraoon of the 21st of July, and at once commenced a course of robbery and pillage, the de:ail of which would not be credited in any civilized lund. Nothing was spared; everything which could be robbed was taken, an Whatever could not be carried off was broken or bnrot. Fires of farniture were buil‘ in the salas of the best houses, and al vf the domestic animals with- in reach wereshot. The churches shared the gene- re] pillage. Attempts were made to blow up the municipal buildings, but with only Moi success. All the tobacce—the great staple of that region— stored in the warehouses, was either carried away or brrnt. In fine, every form of cruelty, pillage and de:truction, which savage ingtnuity was capable of designing, was Peles prectice. All this was done in a single day, for, cowardly as brutal, the /adrones were afraid to trust the chances of another encounter. On the morning of the 22d, heating of the advance of Gen. Cabanas, loaded like asces, they commenced to retreat; and the General the same day re-entered the desolated town without opposition. Since this evacuation’ there have not been any ac- tive operations beyond the surprise of this post, (Omoa.) and its immediate evacuation, some months ag. Both sides, however, have kept considerable deoies of troops in the field. Those of Honduras were withdrawn from the frontier in October, in con- vequence of Ni and San Salvador hat of- fered their mediation between the belligerents. commissioners were io have met to arrange matters two months ago, but I cannot hear that they have et got together. In fact, Guatemala, after ving agreed to the meciation, made a change in the government of Honduras the condition of send- ing ner commissioner. She also demanded to know the terms which Honduras had to propose for an adjustment of ces. Fromaill this I infer tnat sabe docs not wish to bring the quarrel to a close. In fact, it is evident that the reactionists of Guate- mula, who have restored the Jesuits and propose a ye vival of the titles of nobility, will be content with re thing short of the entire prostration and extinc- tivo of the liberal party. It has been reported that S.a Salvador would co-operate with Guatemala to foree @ change of administration and policy upon Honduras. Thardly believe this possible, for waat- ever may be the affiliation of the personnel of the government of Salvador with Carrera and the ser- vies, nothing is more certain than that the people ef Salvador are liberal in principle aud hostile to Geatemala; acd any attempt on the part of its go- vernment to place the State ia hostilities with Hon- drras would probably encounter a revolutionary cpposition. Single handed, Guatemala is unable to rdece Honduras, aad Honduras equally iacapable of subjugating Guatemala, unless aided by an open insurrection in that Stare. ‘The result of the quar- rel, therefore, sooner or Jater, must be some sort ofan ur derstanding; and I should not be surprised if the American representative were to be called upon as & mediator, at lesst on the part of Honduras, whose sympathies are as decidedly American as those of Guatemala are English, anti-American, and anti: republican. Of this difference of feeling the public or , vernment presses of the two States are fair indices. very vumber of Gaveta de Guatemala is filled with extracts from Mexican, Cuban end Spanish j: arnals, reflecting upon the United States and its jostitutions, A late number figured down the Ameri- can Davy to thirty vessels, and copied in fuil the twad- cle of the Cronica of New York on Gen. Pierce's jvangural. By the way, this Cronica, which is no- toricusly sustaioed by the Spanish government, is scattered widely all over Spanish America; and ail of its lies and misrepreseutations are thus (diffused ;scoming from an American paper! That paper in the United States is utterly unknown, and without a particle of importance or isfluence; it is only made ise of for outside, to traduce and libel the count ‘0 whose forbewrance it owes its existence. Its pub- lication, for instance, in respect to the exterior re ‘ations of the United States, are designed to deceive the prees and public of the Spanish American States. fhe dec'arations of Gen. Pierce in his inangural have given great gatisiaction here, as indicat’ng his determination t follow ap the action of the Senate p respect to the occupation and colonization of the Bay Islands by Gieat Britain. It is time a proper commiesion wes cent to ioquire into the actual situa- tion of those islands. The necessity may be obv ted, however, by the action of this government, which will soon send a plenipotentiary to the United States, to bring the whole matter Officially before the American government. By the arrival of the Northern Light we received our letters and files of Jamaica papers, dated to the 12th instant. OUR 61. THOMAS CORRESPONDENCE. Sr. THomas, Jan. 9, 1854. The Progress of the Cholera. The cholera is prevailing here to a fearfal extent. The first cases observed were at an estate on the north side of the island, about 17th December, and in town about the 24th. As yet it isconfined chiefly to the lower classes ; but the deaths since the commence- ment of the epidemic amount to over six per cent of the entire population of the island, and there does not appear to beany decrease, the deaths yeater- day ane been more than any day since it com- menced. It will be fearful if this epidemic should reach Por to Rico; as yet they have nothing of it, and wey have established a quarantine on vessels port of fifteen days. In St. Croix some persons have petitioned the verrment to suspend all communication with St. Thomas, and in consequence, no passengers are al- lowed to go ever from here, but the vessels come over for provisions, and are quarantined on their re- turn seven days.
