The deb. ir likely to become a char, poo tho earnings of (he road, a4 we have ten surplus lots oa the Sixth avenne and For'y-fourth and Forty-nith streets, which, at fair valuation, may be sold for $26,000. Tae real entate owed by the company consista of the above Pamed ten lots, of (curtern lots with tse depot, stables and blackemith’s shop npon them, and of one-haif the fee of property O4 Vensy street, and one half interest in the seven years lease of property 66 Barclay street. The full complement of forty-three cars was not placed upon the road until June lest. This was owing to the ditficulty ef getting them through the over-crowded worksaops. In the seme month, owing to excavations made io the progress of buil¢ing in Church street, our track in that eueet fell ip, and was not restored until October jest. Owing to these cau ies the business of the road was ma- terially Jess than it would otherwise nave been, The ba- Finesse for the past year bas been as folows :—during the year over five ands half millioas of passeagers have ridéen over the road. ‘The reosipta from paasengers ha: amounted to $204,852 96 The expenses of working th road were $170 940 48. The rate of working expenses Las net been as low a8 was beped, owing to the extraordi pary high price of borse-feed, which prevailed iast wea- | Son? having been maintaized during the present. Never theless, the profits of the 's Dusiness, after payfog into the city tressury $5,273 49 taxes, amount to $75, 412 85, Of this amount $75,000 have besa paid to stock holders in cividends, leaving « surpius fand of 83,412 35 to the credit of earnings, ais aurplas would have beea larger equal to one per cent on the capital ik, but for the great falling off in the December receipts, owing mainly to the obstruction of the track by snow, and to ne conseynent increased expenses of keeping up with jouble teams and extra labor the public accommodation slong the line of road, Besides payiog the iargs sum of over $WU0 taxeH info the city treasury, the company has been ucder an experd.ture at the anoual rate of about $8,(00 for cleaning and «pripkling the public streets through which the cars are run. ‘Two important facts are présented in this report which may be opportunely commented oa in connection with he project shadowed forth by ® recent resolution of the Board of Aldermen, calling for information as to the cost of the Sixth and Big Aveaus Reilroads, The cost of the Sixih Avenue Ratirond, with its equipments and real estate, appears to be 87(5,000, To purchase it at tea par cent advance, according to the terms of the agreement with Common Council, would reqaire over $800,000 to be levied upon our citizens in addition to their present heavy tazes. To carry 53g millions of passengers cost $100,000, an average of about 3 4 centa per passenger ridiog any distance, The 1); cont profit on each passenger has enabled the company to pay ten per cent dividend to the stockholders, This is with the energetic and economical a¢ministration that individual enterprise has brosght to bear, Under city mavagemsnt, where other motives than their businers woull obtein in the sppoiutmsat | of the officers snd subordinates managing the road, itis more than likely that the 13g cents now made off of each passergor would be materially dimizished before its fYactional representative reached the city treasury. The present rate o' expense, 8 cen'e per passenger, would probably be enlarged to @ po: ving § email margin op the fiye cents fare collected, Perhaps leas net gain would then result to the city treasury then the $14,000 taxes ang street cleaning pow paid and raved the city by the company working the road) The increase of oflisers ‘and ike new recruits it would bring to the army of place men now fwarming the City Hall, would be of no advantage to the public morals. No ebeaper riding than the five cents now paid could be achieved asa eulve for those citizens who would feel the above enu ted evils. To purchase the two roads—the Sixth and Fighth ayeoue—would involve an expenditure of evgr ose and & half millions, It is not likely that citi zens would be willing to subject themselves to a tax of neatly two millions, to be expended in ® purchase fraught with such results of doubtfal good and positive evil, Nor would the mischief stop here. If these two yoaca were purchased, why not all the city railroads? and this at an expenditure of four or five millions. It were a wiser policy to encourage the constraction and operation of avenue city railroads in the hands of iadi- vidual enterprise, which only can make {t « paying bust ness, Let them take a hint from the report of the com- pany now before us, and strive like Brooklyn to premote the developement of the outer wards by encouraging the operation of thir most efleotive means of transit to ani from the working and sles ping portions of the city. We commend the repott to their attention, with the sugges tion that a geant to the company of the Mercer «ireet and University place branch, parallel to Broadway, here tofore petiticned for by its oflieera, would aid ia such developement, and furnish all the accommodation, with out being loaded with the objections that attach to a ruil oad in Broadway itself. The creditors, whose claim for $100,000 fell due on the lst proximo, offered the company either to take stook at 34, or to grant two years’ delay for the whole. The latter proposition wan accepted, and the company has now two yearsto pay the $100,000, the interest on which is only 6 per cent. The manager has arrived in town with money to pay the second dividemd. He states that the fatare dividends will be even more than 2 per cent every sixty cays. Turning from this company to the Minnesota, we find another and stil! more striking instance of judicious mining rewarded. The ban Mans here with three thousand shares, om of which $23 were paid up. With this sum the mine was opene!, and the profits have been #0 f that the shared sell ‘rom $190 to $210, dividends of per share are declared every few months, and besides this the company has ‘already. ld ‘ions of its land at very large prices.
