BOARDING AND LODGING, Cee SS ae, | eee ee concen eee FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL: errr MONEY MARKET: Tomsbay, Jan. 10—8 P, 4. ‘Mhe stock market opened and closed heavy this mora: img. There was no particular activity in any particular fancy, and prices were very feverish and unsettled. The market is still very weak, and may remain so for some @eys; butthere are no indications of any depreciation, ‘and holders appear able to carry their supplies forward Sor an indefinite period. The bears are strong and are making desperate efforts to deprees prices, knowing ful ‘well that their time is short, and if they do not succeed im Sarning the current in their favor within the next two or Mhree weeks, their chances are up for seme months, We abould not be surprised to see aheavy market for some @ays, and those who take advantage of the present de- Pression will not make any great mistake, At the first Board to-day, Canton Company advanced \{ per cent; Florence apd Keyport, 34; Nicaragua Transit, 1; amberland Coal, 34; Erle Railroad 34; Harlem 3é. New Jersey Zino declined { per cent; New York entra] Railroad, 1; Michigam Central, 5/; Cleveland and ‘Toledo Railroad, {. The transactions in mining stecks do not show any material variation in market val Railroad bonds have again become quiet. We notice a steady but gradual improvement in lilinois Central bonds, Bank stocks are more freely offered today, at lower prices. Nothing doing in State stocks. At the second board the market was much lower, and @loved heavy. There is no life in it, and the bulls and bears seem to be mutually disposed to let it remain dor mant. After the adjournment of the board the following sales 9f stocks were made at auction by Simeon Draper:— 96000 Terre Haute and Richmond RR first mort 7’s,.100 14,000 Mansfield and Sandusky Railroad 32.000 Pennsylvania fives, 1877... 6,000 Buffalo, Corning ard N ¥ Raiiros §,000 Columbus Pique and Ind Railroad do... 8434 80,600 Great Western Ill. The Knickerbocker Bank has declared « dividend of three and a hal’ per cent; the (ocean Bank @ dividend «f three anda half per cent; the Mechanics’ Bank, of Wil Hamsburg, three ands half per cent; the Paterson and Ramapo Railroad, a dividend of three per cent; the New Amsterdam Insurance Company, four per cent; the Home Insurance Company, ten percent. The Broadway Savings’ Institution and the Emigrants’ Industrial Sav- tags Bank, will pay the sem{-anuual interest on deposites oa the 16th inst., at the rate of #ix per cent per annum on wams of five hundred dollars and under, and at the rats of five per cent on larger sums; the Continental Insurance Oompany, five per cent. The steamship Africa, from this port fo: Liverpool to morrow, Wednesday, will take out about three-quarters of 8 million in gold, principally ingots, ‘The closing rates for sterling exchange to-day, ranged from 9 to 9}; per cont premium. The demand was limited. On looking over the Nicaragua Transit Company's semi Annual] statement, we were struck with the fact that @uring Mr. Vanderbilt's agency the company seem to have received from him out uf the earnings of the steam- @re only $49,000, and a credit on coal account for the sum Of $126,000, making altogether out of the earnings $175,000, On making inquiry in a proper quarter if our view of the statement was correct, we were astonished to ind that Mr. Vanderbilt had received from the company’s agents, ©. K. Garrison and William C, Templeton, about the same amount as he kad paid the company out of the earnings of the steamships, so that it appears Mr. Vao- Gerbilt had got the entire earnings of the steamships in hhis hands during the time he acted as agent. Some ides ean be formed of the amount from the fact that the re- port of the company for ihe last six months of the year, ‘ander the management of Mr. Charles Morgan, President, abow a clear profit of about half a million of dollars. The present board of directors are mont desirous of adjusting all the old unsettled scoounts with Mr. Vanderbilt or any ‘ene else, so that a clean account current can bs presented of past and future operations. No new difficulties are Mkely to arise. The business of the company now goes on mmoothy, and everyibing t* liquidated apd adjasted at omce, upon the principle that short accounts make long friends. M. ‘The sales at the board were again large thia morming. Nearly a thousand Ulster sold from 2to 2%. Conrad Hill was in large demand; a sale of 2,000 shares, which took place in the street, will be found registered among the transactions of the board. Lehigh commanded 3, and sold at that figure at the brokers’ board. A slight im- provement in Gold Hill is perceptible in the large tales, at2%{, North Carolina continues to rise; five hundred shares wers disposed of, at 52, buyer 60. Fifty Manilou sold at fifty cents. There were plenty of bids that could not be satisfied. For Cumberland Coal, 347, were bid; for North American, 65; for Dama, 114; for Toltes, 1034; for National, 29; for Dolly Hide, 5, &c, St. Lawrence was offered at 10 cents; Hiwaseeo, at 4;, Douglas Hough- top, at 5; Mineral, at 7c ; Deep River, at 45c.; Ohio Land, at 5°; Jersey Little Falls, at 42¢; Phornix Gold, at Ki MeCulloch, at8%y. ‘The prospects of this latter company present # fine contrast to those of some we have mentioned. The McCulloch has recently liquidated the whole of its debt, ag well for land and mines ss for machinery, It hss plenty of money on hand for its works, and 35,000 shares of its own stock in its treasury; moreover, some $10,000 worth of gold, and about 100 tons of copper already stored in this city. At its mines, it has now five Chillan mills at work, and its engine erected; and expects very shortly to have ten mills, twenty head of stamps, and six amaigamators in full play. Tne supply of ore having been already ascertained to be far more than the company can exhaust for many years, the result can readil ferred. We understand that a been eunk on another vein on this company’s ‘and that the symptoms of developements are to lead to an expectation in certain quarters, that a new company will be formed to work it The change we anticipated in the direction of the Ulster Company, took place thie afternoon, and the following very Atrong board was put im :—Messra, Samuel L.
