all the generous feelings ef the heart; tt ia in New York, it exemplifies the of man in one of its most agreeable phases. May celebration Jong continue to exercise those benignant over us that it now does, and when centuries passed away, may every recurrence of the day con- to bring to the lips of our posterity that talisman friendship and hospitality which we now utter to all readers—"‘A happy new year |” { | "The Second Day of the Carnival. ‘The lively times of sleighing, singing, and rollicking is the order of the day. Each day sesms to add new to the present carnival of the metropolis. Yelterday, tmpe weather being more moderate than on any day pre- ‘vious, gave new ccla/ to the city sports. The thermome tee stood yesterday at midday at 38 degrees, and the san sipone down benignantly upon the musical metropolis. It wees fit day for the dying year. Old 1853 went out amid boundless rejoicings, apd the New Year was ushered io with ringing bell and shouts of revelry. The first signs of thawing were visible yesterday, which caused some re- geet on the part of the sleigh-going community, who are yet by any meana satiated with the festival of the dying year. In some o! the eld countries —the Italian Blates—carnivals take place at stated times, in a cordance with old established rites and customs, and receive the sanction of both Ohurch and State. This carnival day ia given over to rejoicing, the sppetites are let loose, * aad revelry, amd debauchery, and buffwontry are the monarchs of the festival. In our country we have these earnivals, not established by custom, but establishe! by nature herself, What greater or more happy festival eould the mizd of man suggest, or human exertion carry eet, than that which we now epjoy, through the aid of ‘the Storm King, who has spread the earth with a white mantle, emblematic of gaiety and frivolity? Yesterday the vailrosd companies managed to clear their tracks and pat their cars in motion. They were, however, but little patronized; and the omnibus sleigh, in such pleasant weather, was far more attractive to the travelling com- munity. If one is in search of sport, Jet him goto the Battery and engage « sixpence worth of sleighing in one of those demecratic conveyances, which are there con- stantly going and coming, from morning till night. Qnce im motion’ up Broadway, the fun begins. ‘Get off my eeans!’’ cries one. ‘You've no business to have them,’’ exies another. ‘‘Hollo, conductor! whatdo you charge for carrying cora in this sleigh?’ Now a big fat man gets fm and forces his way through the crowd, squeezing free or four into s space of twelve inches. A dozen Mttle ragged urchins cling fast to the runners, much ‘to the annoyance of the conductor, who receives some not very complimentary epithet for switching them off. ‘Yeur next neighbor brings his elbews jam iste your eyes, making you see double for the space of = few mo- ments. No matter—all must be taken in good part ia sleighing time. Then we run into a pile of brieks, fetoh- ing up all standiog—a laugh, » hug, and on we go, re- gardless of consequences. A fidgety old lady has taken ber seat in the crowd, and now ‘wishes she had walked away home before she had got into such compauy.” She considers every lady drank. “Conductor,” says she, “I am sure you'll tip over”’—‘O, dear me!” she exclaims’ im terror, ax we go bang against a lamp post. ‘This is nothing, Madam; we’ll carry you home all safe—fare, if you please.” ‘Carry a homeall safe?’ she repeats, in Fiteous tones, ss she opess her little work bag and eounts ont six bright pennies. A few wish to have a little fan at the old lady’s expense—‘‘I say, Bill, how many Ives have been lost on this track to-day?” The timid pas- wenger opens her eyes with astonishment. ‘I den’t know exactly, but I saw three dead bodies carried from under s sleigh a little while ago.”” “0, Conductor! let me get out; let me getout. Iwon’tiide any further. I am sure I will get killed.” Then comes a shower of gmow balls. One krocks the bonnet over the old lady’s eyes, and she feels that the last trumpet has wounded. A {few bumane and considerate gentle- wen in the sleigh interfere, take the old la- @v’s part, and assure her there is no danger. Bere are symptoms of a row. The rioters dom’t like to have their fon disturbed by this humane interference, ‘The conductor comes along and seta them all looking for ebange, and the storm is allayed inthe general search for sixpences, In this atyle on we go, dashing past this ssigh and against that one, cheering and hailoing until ‘we have arrived at the exd of the journey. Here the @river and conductor liquor up, to repeat the same ex- @ursion. So, from early dawn, goes on the Carnival, un- tii all are tired down with their exertion, and the shades of midnight come to their relief and rest. Long life to the prereat metropolitan Carnival aod the festival of the @ying year. Marine Affairs, Agnvs! OF THE CcRLEW.—The British screw steamship Oarlew, Capt.
