The‘ Old County of Hampshire,” there- ffwe, ceased to exist about forty years ago, and that Mfiectionate desigaation is to be found now in oaly @a8 histories or obsolete chrenicles. While it eestmued to exist in its integrity, it had @laims to be considered oue of the com- Bummities on the continent, and its fertility and Ratora] beauties were worthy of its great poli- ‘eal extent. The county of Hampshire in colo- wala] times was all Westera Massachusetts, The same eounty, from 1761 to 1811-12, was that region leas Berkshire, and was a very important community di wing the {iret thirty-five years of the Btate’s existence; ‘end the present county of Hampshire is but the mere Magment of what was once so designated, and ranks @mong our fourth-rate counties, Middlesex and 3uf- fetk being in the Grst rank, Essex and Worcester in fhe seeond, and Bristel and Norfolk in the third. 1 and rich as she is, and respectable as she ‘ im all ways, Hampshire exercises but a small fiefivence om the affiirs of the State, and not even he rhadow cast by her name can be called great. ‘The history of Hampshire is interesting and ro- | 2, it, contained | mantic. When incorporated, in 16¢ ‘ut three towns, viz.: Northampton, founded ia 3664, and sow the sire town; Hadley, commenced Hy 1659, and Spring: , the oldest place in Wesvern Massachusetts, as it dates from 1636, and now the tai al place in the county of Hampden. After Testcration, when the so-called regicides were to choose between Tyeurn and exile, several @ number came & America. ef there gentlemen were Gofle and Whalley, who had eta high military office under Cromwell, and who fled fo Bew Wnglard. ‘Tey reached Boston, but were @empelled to leave there on account of the g@nnoyanees they experience from some adherents of fe House of stuart, and took up their abode at Cambridge, which in those days was much fartuer fom Boston than it new is. Bateven Cambridge Bacame too Lot for them after intelligence was re q@ived that Goffe and Whalley were not included in fhe act of inéemnity. They went to New Haven, they were protected against their pursuers, gh they were hard pressed. In 1644 they went to Hadley, in Hampshire county, where they lived for years in the house of Mr. Russell, minister of the =. When Hadley was attacked, in 1876, during p's war, a Stranger appeared among the de- Senders of the town, and bore himself so nobly that the repulse of the Indians has generally been attri Dated to bis exertions. It is meee that chis in- @ivdua! was Goffe, though Sir Walter Scott has at- Wlbated the deed to Whalley in “ Peveril of the Peak,” but that person was too far gone ie a decline ‘to have played the part of a deliverer. Cooper bas Made a good use of the incident m one of his Indian movels, “The Wept of Whish-lon Wish,” in the early chepters of waich we have an account of so @f the searches that were made after the regicide the em'ssaries of the royalists. The care that was taken of these men by tue colonists shows what ‘was the party feeling in thove days, and how everse the people of Massachusetts were to the rule of the Btuarie. The incidents of their caroer are inter. woven with our colonial history. Gofie’s appear- at Hadiey was long regarded as a supernatacal lent, and it was supposed that he was the Gray Champion who led the people of Boston ia their fest manifestations of hostility to Sir Ndmund An pes, in 1689. Por tais last piece of history my only gutherity is Mr. Hawthorne, and did he not wrive the “Lite of Franklin Pierce’ Tais champion is the dian genius—the St. George or St. Denis—of Yankees, and always makes his appearance, like | ‘@ ghostly stormy petre!, inst asa “row” is about to the monotony of New England life Goite gma Whalley were originally buried at Hadley, but Wheir remains were removed to New Haven, where they now lie, hard by those of Dixweil, a third regi- | Gide, whose course of American life was much more agreeable than that of those who became his brethren im death. ‘Bhere have been quite a number of eminent men @onnected with Hampshire county. Mr. Bryan‘, the and editor, was born at Cummington, in 174. | 'b Strong, one of our earliest United States sena- | tors, and who was elected Governor of Massachusetts | oftener thau any other man, was of Northampton, ‘where he now lies buried. Isaac Bates, alsc a national senator, belonged here, and so did Myron Lawrence, reeently deceased, who for many years had @ proimi- ment part in our State polities. Jcnatha the great metaphiysician, lived and preached at Nor: hampton for almost a quar Bancroft, secretery, ambase man, and collector, once kept tae academy at Rowaid Hill, Northampton. He was a whig in those days, gad atrended whig conventions in which ¢ Jack- gem was dénounced: but when the whigs would not mominate him for Congress he saw that they were iwjuring the country, and made his fortune bya timely ‘rat.’ Noah Webster once resided at Am- hherst. Joseph Hawley, one of the best mea of the Revolutionary era, lived at Northampton. He is not go well known as be deserves to be to the mass of weaders in our time, bot he was greatly reapecied by the mest eminent men in the contest that eventuatod 4m onr pationality bing established. He was eariy nm advocate of independence, and Patrick Henry de. e@lared that he had tue right idea of things long be fore the great cvert act was perpetrated. General Washington was one of his sorrespondents, and held ‘kin iv bigh esteem. The town of Hawley, now in Fracklin county, but originally in Hampshire, and which was incorporated in 1792, was named in honor ‘Tne best kuowa | Edwards, | rot a century. Mr, | lor, historian, ‘clergy- | covered with water, 5,749; ef unimprovable lant, 25,036. There are not finer farms in the State than those of Hampshire, and the poattion of her agricul- turists might be envied by those of most of our coan- ties. I know not whether there be anything parti- cularly eonservative about such*a social condition as prevails in Hampebire, where every one seems to be well off, bucit is certain that here tie federal and whig parties have always beeu strong. Of late ears the whigs have kept their ascendanvy in jampshire in spite of the efforts of the coalition, which organization has never been so strong here as to warrant a forma! union of the demo- erats and free soilers on senstorial nominations. In the matter of manufactures, Hampshire does not occupy a very lofty position, not ascendiag mach beyond the respectable point. In 1850, the number of cotten factories here was fonrteen, with 69,474 spindles. Ware has the greatest interest in this business, having four factories and about 20,600 spindles; and South Hadley comes next, having about as mapy spiadles as Ware. Tne other places having such factories are Williamsbarg, Norshamp- ton, Amberst, and Enfield. Tae number of woollen factories are eighteen. Ware takes the lead here, too, though Northampton is but little bebind her. The other towns engaged in this manufacture are Enfield, Middlefeld, Amherst, Granby, Williamsbarg, Cummington, South Hadley. Plainfield, and Greenwich. There are two card fa: tories at Enfield, a button and suspender factory at Easthampton, and two silk factories at Northampton. There are eleven Peper mills in the county—three at Amherst, three at Northampton, three at South Had- ley. one at Middlefield, and one at Granby. The mills at South Hadley are almost equal in value to all the others in the county, Northampton ranks next, and theo Amherst. There are foundries at Northampton and Ua The other manufactures of Hampshire are cards, railroad cars, chairs, cabinetware, leather, boots aud shoes, s‘raw bonnets aud hats, bricks, mechanics’ tools, all kinds of brooms, lumber, sadales, laces and edgings, Band and hat boxes, type cases, washing machines, stee) springs, children’s wagons, veloc- des, cotton wifking, harnesses, shovels, spades, forks, trunks, ploughs, rakes, brassware, palmleaf hats, snuff, segars, tobacco, organs, raw silk, axe- handles, sashes, blinds; hollow augers, prepared marble, curled palmicaf, hollow ware and castings, woodenware, horn handles, scythe stones, button moulds, scythe snaiths, carriages, bedstead posts, wagon hubs, turner’s ware, scythes, hoes, pails, brushes, lead pipe, sheet iron, broom tcrewa, cutlery, hinges, glue and gums, pumps, boats, felloes, drawn wire, ribbons, sewing silk, gold and silver wire and jewelry, soap and candles, tinware, cooper’s ware, turning machines, book binder’s work, printer's work, bsilding stone, charcoal, lasts, bench and hand screws, farming utensils, molasses, rl but- tons, baskets, fancy bonvets, weavers’ harnesses, silver platedware, axe helves, bobbins, horn buttons, covered buttons, steel pens, leather boxes, japanved buttons, painted curtain Diinds, carpenters’ planes, &e., &c. In Is45 the value of the pulmleaf hats mace was but little short of $90.000. Thesame year the value of the Florence and fancy bonnets made at Ware was $50,000. The value of csrds maunufac- tured at Enfield was $35,000. The value of lumoer annually made is 2bout $130,000. The aumber of dwelling houses in this county, in 1850, was 5,414; shops, 697; still houses, 3; tan hot 21; warehouses and stores, 125; grist ills, 40: falling mills, 7; saw miils, 145 ; other mills, 17 ; card factories 2 ; oil factory 1. The number of barns was 4,908 ; and of all other buildinge not previously specified, and of the value of twenty dollars and up- wards, 1, The amount of every person’s stock in trade $560,557 ; of public securities, $42,676 ; of money at inter: 836,271; of bank and insur- ance stock, $657,820; of other share property, $00,721 ; and of ounces of plate, 1,025, exclading all plate under twenty dollars in value. In these items of personal Crotigae Ss which represent the capital of retired persons, if] may so call it, Northamp‘on takes precedence. The teauty of that place has attracted to it many wealthy veople, whose taste in the selection of an abode shows that they have at least one claim to be considered fairly entitled te the enjeymeut of riches. More than half the plate re- turned belongs to Northampton. Yet it would not be right to seek to convey the impression that North- ampton is simply a place of retirement for the wealthy. On the contrary, it isa leading business | town, tall of life and activity. The tone of society, however, is seid to be aristocratic, which means, I suppose, that the daughters of retailers of silk are not allowed to sasociate with the dauguters of the manufacturers of silk. It is evident that the Nicaragua route is shorter by several days than the Panama route, and it seems imposatble to expect tha: the mails will be ceatinued by # route that cannot equal the quiskest in time—in fact, the excitement in Cali- fornia on this subject bars any such expectation. The government has fall power, under their contract with Mr. Aspix wall, to order him to carry the mails by the quickest route before they ean aanul the con'ract, when, if be should net be able to mect the requirements of the law, it will rest with Congress to annal the con- tract, and itis clear that great efforts will be made in the next Corgress to produce thie result. The Mexican Ocean Mail and Inland Company have commenced their regularg trips, earrying © mail by ‘Bamesy's route,” threngh Mexice, performing the service betweea Acapal- co and Vera Oruz in from seventy-two te eighty hoary. Unfortunately there bas not been» regular conaec‘ion at Acupuleo with the Pacitic steamers, with two or thiee exceptions, therefore the advantages of this rouve ever both the Panama asd Niesragua reutes, are net so gen- erally krewn.. It seems that this company made a con. tract with the Pacifie Mail Company to carry the mail between fan Framciseo and Acapulco; but by some ir- regularity the boats on the Pacifie have not connected &t Aeapnico with their line from New Orleans via Vera Cruz, etherwise s mail would have been received at New Orleans in fifteen or sixteen Gays, semi-monthly, for the Isst two months; aud as it ia mow known and setiled that there are two shorier and quicker mail routes from San Francisco than the Panama rocte, it isan easy matter to account for the great fall in their stock.
