The arriral of gold dust from California received by the steamship Northern Light may help the banks this week, but the exports are likely to Increase, 2nd the specie basis of our city institutions roust gradually fall off. There is no help for it, and most stringent times are in the perspective. The negotiations which have been pending for a wask pant between the Ogdeneburg Company and the lower lines were finally brough’ toaclose by the sale ef all the second mortgage bonds of the Ogdensburg Corpora- tion, ot par. This highly satisfactory arrargement ena- bles the Ogdensburg Railroad uot only to pay its coupons on the first of October, but also to maeet all its liabilities, and bave 2 handsome surplus, besides the unsold shares on hand, ard a very large amount of valuable ros! estate at Ogdensburg and Rouse’s Point, not wanted for the par- poses of the corporation, The Legirlature of Virginia have lately incorporated the Dora Authracite Coal and Iron Manufacturing Com- pany, with s cepital of $1,000,000, for the parpoze of working one of the richest mineral regions which exist in that State. The lands of the corporation covar 15,000 ath The Virginia Cential Rail- road from Richmond passes in close proximity, Staunton station being eighteen miles distant. The Manassas Gap Railzoad will pass still nesrer—within ten miles. The latver road is already graded to Strasburg. We have good authority for stating that the mineral resources of this region ore of a natare truly unparallelied. The deposits exist in an extensive range of hills, ard crop out, at the surface and sides, for miles together. ‘The annexed article, from the American Railroad Jour nal of the 24th inst, gives about as interesting an ac- count of the rize, progress, and present position of the Erie Railroad Company, as we have seen for a long time. Four years age we presented to tae public statement upon statement showing that sertain results would ulti- mately be realized. Those who wore at that time coa- vinced, and avoided invest nents im the stoek, have never regretted it, for fortunes upon fortuces have been lostia the fluctugtions, The present market price is entirely fietitioas, and befere the stock becomes again at all distiidbuted a decline of twenty and thirty per cant must be rubmitted to, We give the annexed article merely for the purpose of presenting certain facta (which are not of the neelves vew or startling,) in a different light. Our opinion has been the same throughout in relation to the constructien and operation of this road, and during the time which has elapsed since ita reorganization we have never seen the first reason tochange our mind. Every di rector in the past and present Boards of Direstors knows better than any outsider that the Erie Railroad Company is bankrupt, insolvent, rotten to the very core, notwith standing which dividends are declared and paid Our predictions in relation to this company wereat the tixe a ttle premature. We wores little too far in advance of the public mind on this subject; bat every prophesy will be Uterally fulfilled: — Exuz Rattroan—Oost or TRANSPORTATION. There ia a strong movement in Erie stock. As money is till tight for speculative purposes, and as tho rise in Erie in ovt of all proportion to the advance of other stocks, we have s right to suppose that the present movemeat proceeds from certain parties who are ucderstood to have gone into thin concern at a high figure, avd are now taking this method of shifting thetr responsibilities upon other shoulders. Such we suppose to be the fact. Io the speculation in the stocks it js immaterial to ua who win or love ; but for the benefit of thore whe may bs desirous of purchasing for other purposes than apesniation it may be well to eubmit a few considerations touching the value of Brie rtock The first question that presenta iteelf ia, how much monry hes been lost (to use an inofiensive term) in con- struction ? We precuroe we are far within bounds when we pnt the amount at $10 000,000, « sum equal to the en- fire capital stork.
