@f superiority. It is adapted to turn sod-lices five to seven inches deep by ten to twelve imehes wide, and if wanted will ploagh hill- sides much deeper and wider. Its make is sim- ple, and it is said to work advantageously. A hook, fastened by a staple to the centre-piece of the handles, and changing to either side of the beam as may be desired, enters the back part of the mould- board, and holds it fast on either side of the standard as wanted. The mould-board is easily and instantly vevolved from one side of the standard and beam to the other, making a right or left hand plough at pleasure, while the team 1s turning at the ends of the plough-field; indeed, it naturally changes from one side to the other of itself, if the hook is lifted, while the team is turning. With this plough, the plough- man may commence on the lower edge of a hill side and turn his furrows all down the slope, changing his plough to a right or left hand one at each turning of the team at the ends of the field; or he may begin en one side of a level ficld and lay his furrows all one way, thus avoiding the ‘‘dead” or cleansing furrow im the centre, and the ridging on the vides; and at the next rotation of crops on the field, he may begin en the opposite side and turn them back again, thas keeping the soil equally distributed and the surface Ievel. _ Besides this, there are ploughs for deep tilling, for ploughing stubble, for sod and sub-soil ploughing— ip short, for all tae demands of the agricultural com- munity. BARROWS. Next to the plough the harrow is looked upon asoc- cupying an important position among farming uten- sils. The plough and the harrow may be placed in brotherhood, because, after the one the other is al- most indispensable. Great improvements have been made, within a comparatively recent period, in the make of the harrow, by which @ more perfect pul- verigation of the grouad and saving of time and strength are secured. A recent invention, on exhi bition, is called the “Parallel Bxpandiag Cultiva tor.” Its shape is somewhat like a plough, excepting the coulter aud mould-board. It has three teeth—one iw the centre frame and two others behind it—the ‘three forming a rightangle. Tus is principally used between the rows of cultivated crops, and tor raking the greund preparatory to receiving seed. It is con- structed by cross joints and elbows, to contract or expand at pleasure; but the teeth stand in the same Telative position whether the frame is expanded or contracted. These harrows are constructed in many different ways, but ull acting upon the same princi ple. Some are made with five teeth set in a wide featur, These kinds of hatrows are all known as “cultivators/’ and are probubly the most valuable harrows yet invented. The “horseshoe harrow” could be in many cages profitably used upon a farm. It takes its name from ite shape, like o horseshoe. It hada handle like a eommon plough, and from the main horizontalbeam, en each side, is a curved beam attached, in the end ef which is a miniature plough. Forward in the main beam is a tooth, which is simply a coulter to keep the implement steady and in # straight di- rection, This ia designed for hoeing or cuygtyating ern, the various root crups, cotton, ‘abps, young Burseries, and hoed crops generally, and is a great exterminator of the weeds and grass. The two side ploughs may be changed so as to throw tlie furrow outside or invale—that is, from the rows at first weeding, watn the plants are small and tender, or towards them in later cultivation. In the centre beam, behind the two side ploughs, is a urge, broad tooth, which effectually disposes of grasses and weeds, cutting off or rooting up all that come in itsway. The ploughs and harrows spokon of are Manufactured at Worcester, Massachusetts. TRISH DEPARTMENT. POPLINS AND TABINETS. Our notice heretofore of this source of Irish ‘wealth wus short, owing to the want of time to col ect detailed information upon this subject. The great beauty of this fabric and the amount of ca- pital inve-ted in it, is, we think, a snfficient gua- rantee forour alluding agam to this valuable and ‘portant manufacture. In connection with the Ainen trade, it is one of the greatest sources of Irish wealth, We have already spoken of the particular beauty of this article, and reterred to that on exhi- bition, We will now only allude to its origin and progress in Ireland. The manufacture of silk, with its branches, is one of the oldcet possessed by Ireland. Its introduction dates from 1685, when the revocation of the edict of Wantes drove over to England aud Ireland upwards of 30,000 skilled artizans from Paris and Lyons. A number of these refugees settled in Dublin, where they introduced the manufacture of silk and wool, mixed, aud cffected many improvements io the weay- ing of silk, and this city was long one of the princi- pal seats of the silk trade. The mixture tu poplins of two materials apparently so different, gives great ppportunity for novelties both in style aud texture, aud for new combinations of colors. In the Irish poplins, or tubinets, not only have the brightest colors been employed, but gold aud silver tissues, and with the happiest effect. From a combination of circum- stances the silk business of Dublin greatly declined; but long after the withdrawal o/ any support from protective duties the manufacture of Irish poplins still maintained its superiority, and has now experi- enced a very great revival. In this fubric the warp is composed of silk, and the wett, or filling, of wool. As the manufacture is entirely curried on by hand, and as the cost of lubor is a large proportion-of the value of the whole production, it seems probable that it will continue to be a staple trade in Ireland. A larger capital than heretofore has been latterly smbarked in it, encouraging greater taste and skill. WASHINGTON NATIONAL MONUMENT.
