Arrival of the Caravan from Red River at St. Paul, Minnesota. (From the St Paul Democrat, July 20.) The annual caravan from Ted river reached this pe last evening. Our old townsman, Charles walier, Esq., late Collector of Pembina, was one of the train, and to him we are indebted for the follow- fie carara caravan consists of one hundred and thirty- three carts, thirty-two of which belong to the Selkirk settlement on tie British side of the line, and the balance to Messrs. Kittson, Rolette, Gingras, Cavi- lier, and others residing at Grand Cote, Pembina, &e., on the American side. They left Grand Cote on the 15th day of June, and reached Traverse des Bioux, on the Minnesota river, on Sunday last, ha occupied thirty-two days in making the trip. From Traverse des Sioux they came down on board the Clarion. On the route they saw a great many buffalo, and killed as many as they needed. They Gov. The caravan brings some six hundred bales of fars and skins, and were obliged to leave a large quantity behind. Rt. Rev. Provone'er, the Catholic Bishop at Red river, died a few days before the train ieft. The business at Red river, on the American side of the line, is mostly being concentrated at Grand Cote, about thirty miles west of the old settlement of Pembina, and four or five miles south of the British line; avd Mr. C. thinks that it will finally adsorb the greater part of the settlers on the British side. Such is the case, disgraceful and strange as it may seem. These reckless fauatics are not content with breaking the law, and trampling it under foot, but must celebrate the commission of such high crime from year to year. They have en- Vieting Hallin which to hold their treason . This we know to be a fact, having been so med by Dr. Wieting, the proprietor, himself, and for whom, personally, we entertain the highest respect, and always have; but it seems strange, in- deed, that a man of his priuciples will lend his pro- perty to any such low, base, and contemptible par- pose. There can be no sort of excuse for this, and we really hope the Doctor will reconsider his deter- mination in the premises. He must know, without onr telling him, that the people of Syracuse will not submit to be doubly disgraced and demeaned by such @ crime-approving gathering as is proposed. We speak of this from the feeling that is known to exist our citizens generally. There is no law to reach these rejoicers in mob violence to overthrow law; and under the existing state of things, we sug- that it may be well for Dr. W.to consider the Se yrece that will attach to his hall if he permit these black banner rowdies to occupy it, to say no- thing of other unfavorable circumstances that may ocour.—Syracuse Star, July 28.
