Another Firemen’s Triat Newark, N. J., July 27, 1853. James Gorpon Bennett, Esq:— Sir—The trial of fire engines at New Haven last week bas created quite an excitement among the firemen of this place. I will give you the result of a trial which Liberty Engine Company Nv. 1, of this city, had on Tuesaday evening, July 26. They took their ene to the flag staff on the Washington Park, which is one hundred and fifty feet in height, and out of one length of hose, through a one inch nozzle, they threw fifteen feet above it. They then played on a level, through the same number of hose, and threw one hundred and eighty-four feet solid water, and one hundred and ninety-five feet, spray, counted. This pluying has never been beaten in this city, and it will compare favorably with any in New York. They took the water in tue “box,” for there is not force enough in our hydrants to use a cvnnection. The engine is eight-inch cylinder, built in your city, but it has been highly improved by a member of the company. Yours, respectfully, Jeusey. The Danger of City [ evei. The eum of $30,000 is annually appropriated by Congress, to be expended by the Superintendent of the Coast Survey in making a survey of the Florida Reef and Keys. This great work has been slowly, but steadily and correctly, progressing for the past five years, until a large portion of the most dangerous points and shoals have been laid down, many new channels discovered, and new harbors opened. The hydrography of this harbor was made by Lieutenant John Rodgers, now in the Beh: its expedition, in the winter of 1851, and is @ very accurate survey, and entirely reliable. The bydrography of that of the reef and inner channel la} tween Cape Florida and Cffrystort light, however, has been completed the present ceason by Lieutenant Craven, in the steamer Corwin. The triangulation and survey of this key have been finished some time, also the triangulation from Cape Florida to Rodireguez key, some six hun- dred square miles of which was made by Lieutenant James Totten and C. T. Jardella, this year. Bocca Chica, au island adjacent to this city, was surveyed in June and July by R. M. Bache, sub assistant, by order of the superintendent. This island will be offered for sale by the land offize cn the receipt and periection of the plan and maps. The island con- tains two large salt ponds, of over six hundred acres, both having narrow inlets from the sea, and needing but little expense to make them available for all the purposes of salt manufacture by solar evaporation. ‘The light at Sand Key was lighted on the 20th, as | advertised. The Key is distant from this city nine | miles, and is the most southern point of land that Uncle Sam possesses. The lantern of this light, however, is 127 feet above the le el of the sea, an it is eaid that both this light and the Moro light at Havana can be seen at the same time from the royal mast of a seventy-four. From the deck of a ship it is clearly visible at the distance of twenty miles. It is a flash light, but never wholly eclipsed. When seen in its greatest brilliancy it is truly dazzling, and is so powerful as to cast a shadow of objects upon this Key. , A wrecking vessel, late from Indian Key, brought down the inclosed note, it having been taken from the neck of a booby, (a species of gull,) which me ashore much eausted by its burden and long | fight — 1, Booby, take my departure from ship Moses Taylor, N Y. FRENCH, The health of the city is remarkably ; fears were entertained that the great rains of June would cause sickness, but as yet there is not a case of fever on the island. The weather is cooler than in any Atlantic city, the thermometer ranging from 84 to 90 deg. The trade winds have set in, and are most re- freching. The current on the reef is running strong to the eastward. But few vessels pass in sight.
