The Devas- tation is a vessel of 1,050 tons, with engines nomi- nally of four hundred horse power, but which can be worked up to the power of seven hundred horses. She is very heavily armed, having one eighty-four ounder gun aft, one sixty eight pounder in the bow, four thirty-two pounders, two twenty-four pounders, oue brass field piece for service on shore, and fora like service a brass ten inch howitzer. She carries one hundred and sixty men, and can make, when under full steam, ten knots an hour. ‘ The Leander, fifty gun frigate, instead of remain- ing for three weeks, as was expected, has been tele- preeaeally ordered to Pictou immediately, and leaves to-day at one o'clock, Whether Russian or American movements induce the admiral to collect a strong force in the Gulf we know not, but there is some potent reason for doing so evidently. The Leander is a beautiful yessel in every respect, a fine model, heavily armed, and loftily rigged. On her upper deck she carries four eighty-four pounders, some brass boat-guns, and a grand battery of thirty- two pounders. On the main deck there are fifteen thirty-two pounders on euch side. Her crew num- bers some five hundred persons. Our readers will notico, with no little surprise, a very extraor- dipary ciroular in the Watchman this week, f-om the Hon, James Maurice, member of Congress elect from this district. We received this manifesto from Mr. Maurice several days since but did notYntend first to insgusg till wosaw it made public through other papers | So that omedemocratio readers in the district might a well have the oiroular at once, and fully understand the posi the administration. your political friends of Queens count He was rupported by the democratic electors generally. well remember however, the declarations and predic of some of the leading demcerats of Suffolk county, pendin the election. that Mr. Maurice was not reliaole. and thai he would not truly, and in good faith, represent the prin ciples and withes of this strongly democratic dittrict. But DO one, we presume, expected 30 Boon to seo Mr Manrico st has conatituents by openly denouncing a demo- ministration which they assisted in elevating, and which is so universally aperove by the Legislature of the State, and we presume, would be by near! the whole of the democratic party of this district. The reader's surprise will increased when he Jooks, and look for & reasonable and well founded excuse for this singular and ill-tempored com- munication. ‘Ihere seems to be nothing of which Mr. Mau Fice complaing, except « fow appointments which he did not r end, and which be does not appro: seems, bas had no influence with the adminii taining feveral appointments. and, therefore, denounces the President and Vortmaster General in no vory moderate ferme, Mr. Maurice taye= "and if the great body of the Awerican people had not been deceived into his support, as Iwas. Gen. Plerce would still be practising law at Concord, and illustrating by turns the politics and the jurispradonce of New Hampsbire.”” Wow Mr. Maurice was deceived we do not learn, Did he expect to have greater influence with Gen. Pierce! Did he expect to control all the appointments in thedi-trict ‘The notion that no appointments should be made in the district vithout the endersement of Mr. M., as the member of Congress, is both ridioulous and absurd. ‘The good opinion of Mr. Maurice in favor of any spplicant for Office would be worthy of consideration, but no more because he is a member of Congress. No appointments we presume, have been made for this dittrict unless the applicauts have been well recommended, avd their qualifications carefully considered. If they have not had the recomme idation of Mr Maurice they have been recommended by other intelli- gent and influential members of the democratic family in tho particular localities woere the offices are kept. We bope Mr. Maurice will not misrepresent the wishos of his constitne :ts—that he will cither resign his office in time for the election of anagher or recall his cirevJar and support the present State and Genersl administrations WATERING PLACES.
