The Senate are determined to davote (he remainder of the time left it to the bert interests of the people. Yes- terday three sessions were held—morning afternoon and evening, The greater part of the day was cocupied in discussing the Niagara Ship Canal bill 1: was not deci- ded @atil late in the evening, when a finally taken, and the bill passed. receiving seventeen ‘votes, just a constitutional majority. There was mueb said on both sides, and the contest bas been aa exciting one. The friends of the cana! say that ine ‘eoths of the tonnage passing through the Welland Caual is ¢ »mposed of American vessels, and thst a caosl on our side of the Falls would naturally sttract a great portion of the trade passing down and up between the upper and lower lakes; ‘and in case of warlike difficulties our goverument would have the use of the canal for conveyance of vessels from ene lake toanother. On the otber band, it was contended that the Western trade and produce would find its way upon the waters.of Lake Ontario, and immense quantities of produce would be diverted to the north by way of the St, Lawrence, and to the eas: by the Ogdeasburg road which would, as it pow does, tlad tide water through the Erie esnal. And also by going through the propo.ed ship canal, by the way of Oswego, one half of the Erie canal would be avoided, and consequently an immense amount of canal tolls lost to the Sate. It is conceded that the act incorporating a com oany to construct « ship canal on the Americen ride of the Niagara Falls, 90 a9 to connect Lakes Erie and Ontario, is ons of the greatest measures of this Legislature. The capital which itis expected to consume +ill be » me tive millioas. Early in the Senate this moroing Mr. Coolef ros> to a question of privilege He held in hi- hacd the Tribune of the 4th inst.. im which ~as contained an account of the proceedings ion of Irish societies held at Montgomery Hall, No 76 Prinse street, on the previous Friday evening. nyon the Ten Hour bill. The honorable Senator alluded to the remarks made on that oceasion by Mr. Dee in these words:— “Yea, he (Mr. Cooley) will support it. A pretty way he has taken todo +o, by voting to lsy it on the im order to kil it ; and then, in order to throw dust inthe eyes of the working men, he moved to have ‘the vote recon:idered "” Mr. C stated that this was a misrepresentation. He ‘was a sincere friend to the Ten Hoar, Wi and te pes advocated its passage from the fir't introduction of t Dill until {te final defeat. He had moved « recousidera- tion on two occasions, un? endeavored iu ail sinoerity to procure the passege of the T-n Hour bill. Mr Otis also stated that be offered aon ameadment. ineludiog all classes of working people believing taat seamstresses were also entitled to some proreetion. Mr Cooley also chastised the reporter of one of the ublic journals, alleging that he hao been misquoted ia fis (rooster) remarks yesterday. The hosorable Senator was quite severe in his remarks, The Senate then resumed the consideration of the Sup- ply ae Cooley moted to strike out the item pro- vising Yor the pay of members. Only three mecabers ‘voted im favor, fess. Beunett, Cooley, and Pierce, The remainder of the day was consumed upon the bill. The appropriations to dispensaries and orphan asy- lums were stricken out a’ter a very protracted struggle. Secators from the rural districts opposed those appropriations on accouat of the local institutions being in cities. The Senate bave now been engagad nite whole days and three nights upon the Supply bill More than « hundred and fifty thousand doltars nave been erased f/om the bill as received from the House Sena tora are heartily weary of the session and will rejoice when the momert arrives for an adjournment. Mr. Taber remarbed that. were it not for polities! questions, he would rerign his seat immediately; and if »ny democratic Senator would pair off wih hiw, and re-iga with him, he was seady todo so. The bili was finally agreed to, as revised, and curtailed of its proportions, in many resvects very righteously, and will be seut to the House on Moa day morning. Toe Tax ond Toll bill, which has been in the Senate since the regular session, wili be takeo up on Monday. ‘Another Jer gtby discussion wil! be had upon it as it in- volves the question whether the people shall be taxed ‘and tbe railroads tolled tor the purpo-e of raising reve- nue for the support of government. The House was called to order, but no quorum present, A sufficient pumber of member~ kad not arrived from the Crystal Palace, ands call of the House was made. After ‘8 suspense of a few moments, Messrs. Holley Burroughs, and a few others, were brought in when the farce ended, and the House proceeded to reading and voting upen bill, Before dinner hour the House was again left witbout a qnorum, but no cull was made Is” the afternoon. the resslution offered by tae Joint Committee fer 2» fioal adjourament was taken up. Mr Shaw made quite an ironical speech. He thought this was a mode! Legis'ature. Other States would follow our example. Ohio »nd other States would hereafter hold extra sessit ns, impeaching State officers, &c., in imitation of this Legi-lature He ridiculed the idea that the Houte could adjourn oa Mooda~; bat, for himself, be was ready to retire from the Capitol any moment. After an hour's debste a motion wa+ made by Mr. O'Brien to lay the motion on the table, which pre vailed, and the House very prudently adjourned over ua- til Mondsy morning. NEW YORK LEGISLATURE. The great debt of ihe Stare, sirewsy in existence, needs te be regarded The amendmen to the constitution im respect tc the canals is to be submitted to the people. If adopted some nine or ten millions will be added. It is feared by many that the cons’ruc ion of this capal may em barra-s the power of the canals to pro duce revenue. But he did vot believe this. He thought abundant business would be found. Mr V proposed « section reserving to the Legi-iature the righ’ to impose toils on this caval, if it hall be found prejudicial to the business of the Erie canal. Mr. Piatt (whig) said ten millions of Ameriexn pro perty were Low subject to the caprice of « foreign gov ernment—a government that bas already threatened clone it. These merchants are sensitive on this audject and they bave looked to an American canal as a protec tion.
