MRSCAGE PROM THE MAYOR, A communication was received from hia Honor the Mayor, relative to the builcing of a pier souta of pier No. 1 North river, transmitting a petiuon of E. A. Stevens oa the rame subject; ‘whereupon Aldermen STURTEVANT presented a preamble and resolu. tion, authorizing the extension of room between the two piers to 250 feet. i Alderman Denman presented a resolution, that the one heretofore parsed oy the Common Council, granting per missiem to Cornelius Vanderbilt to builda pier in the North river, be rescinded Peck, Boyce and Sturtevant appoiated id Gas ra to Oakley, i, Bard, Cornell and ppro- entn apgels described by the poet— “Few, and far between.”” ‘Was it envy that kept them from a scene so congenial to woman’s nature, fearful that their charms would be outdone by those of the, roses and flowers exposed to view? or are the allurements of shopping in the dry goods and jewellers’ stores more attractive than the simple beauties of nature? In sooth, not for us; we spent some delightful hours among many of the choicest plants and flowers that could be presented to our sight, acd in scenting the fragrance of nature’s sweet- ect gifts, enjoyed a pleasure that could not be bougbt for money in all the perfumers’ stores in New York. The efforts made by this society to diffuse a taste for flowers, and to extend their cultivation, are highly commendable, and in every point of view they are of i fortunes. Im large cities like our own, where scciety lives in £0 artificial a cundition, the inhabitants are apt to for. get the more simple beauties of na sure, and to depend too much for amusement upon artificial resources. Asything that conducts us ba to the prime condition of un, when he lived among plaats aad flowers, ax innocent as themselves, is a step in the right path. A passion for flowers, when not carried to an excess, like the tulip mavia of Holland, isa healthy feeling, and in many large cities—-as Paris, for example—tbe most attractive sight is the flower market. As the above mentioned society has spared n> expense in fitting up Metropolitaa Hall ia an appropriate style, we should have wished to have seem our citizen population flockicg into the exhibition in crow@s, in the same manner as they do to Barnum’s Mu- seum to see the bearded lady, or as they did to see Washington's woolly beaded’ ‘nurse, the other monstrosities for which our friend Barnum is so world- renowned. As itis, we would advise those who bave a taste tor flowers—azd who has not?—to visit the exkibi- tion immeciately. We suppore that it would be super- flucus to remind them that “the roce it will fade ina day.’ Unfortunately, the naturai flowers, however they excel in beauty and fragrance, will not last as loog as thore painted pieces of calico that adorn Indies’ caps end bonnets, yelept artificial flowers. he flowers iu the exhibition the roses were the most Dume: ous, and several large and choice collections were exhibited ix the stands. A view of the Victoria Kegia in bloom is worth alone the price of admission. The Whigs of the Ashland District and the Administration, (From the Louisville Journal, June 13 } The Whig Central Committee of the Ashland district have put forth a most eloquent and powerful address to the people. We give the following extract, to show how the whigs of Lexington view a matter upon which we have repzatedly and strongly expressed our own opinion :— G The now administration has been but three months in power, but yet log enough to give some inkling of its Cemocratic character. Who get the spoils? Oi course thore who have deserved them by their party services. Now, whom bas President Pieree appointed to office? Will you look at his cabiuet? Would you, after all that was saidin Kentucky before the election. expest to find avowed enemy to the Union party ia the South, and inexorable foe to the compromise, there? Yet there is distinguished member holding such principles, now a Secretary of War. Would you expect to find a free-soiler theie? Certainly not; but turn your eyes wo Washington city and you will sce, in the person of Mr. McClelland, a redemptionless free soiler and enemy of Southern institu- tions, from Michigan, now holding the office of Seccetary of the Interior, High places truly, but doubtless well merited—gocd democrats, but only @ little soiled with the dirt of absli- tion aud disunion. Will you look at the foreign appoiut- ments, first ani second class ministers, the Supreme Court azd consula—valuable places—honsor and money in them, much sought after of course. Read this cata- logue, and tell us honestly and truly, how do you like it? and why it was that these places were given to such men ?— Jefferson Dayis, Secretary of War—Nullifier and Se- cessioniat, Reiert McClelland, Secretary of the Interior—Free- soiler. Jobn A. Campbell, Judge of the Supreme Court—Nul- Mépnond_diupionist. : filibuster, and secessionist. Jobn A. Vroom, Minister to Prussit New York Evening Post he is a freesc copstitutionality of the fugitive als law James Gadsden, Migister to Mexico—Nullifier and go- covsionist. Wiliam Trousdale, Minister to Brazil—Opponent of the compromise, who canvasced the State of Tennessee, in op- position to it, when a candidate for Governor, #ud was defeated. Soion Borland, Minister to Central America—Bitterly anti compromise, and so ultra State rights as to deny thy power of Congress to pass a fugitive slave law Benjentn #. Apgéll, Coc8ul at Honolulu—Bitler free- soiler. Edwin De Leon, Consul at Alexandria—Disunionist, and lately editor of the disunion organ, the Southern Press. Auguste Belmont, Charge at the Hague —Mr. Belmont hae been for years Consul Genezal in the United States of Austria, that bloody despotism, and is the person upon yvhom Hul-emann devolved his duties waen Webster's severe rebuke drove him from the country. There is no American feelng about bim. J.J. W. Grey, Postmaster at Cleveland—Abolitionist, and ¢ditor of av abolition paper. feJumes Long, Register of tne Land Office in the city of Chicago— Fret soil r Richard 8 Moloney, Register of the Land Office at bolitionist. The list might bs prolonged almo:t indefinitely. Avd for you, Kentucky democrats, who admized Gen. Butler ard recem mended him for the Presidenc: you like the proposed appointment of Ge as Consul to London’ George did not hike ler, General Cass, or ) must have its reward, and in hts person it go: grest metropolis of the vor and editor of the Democra: making Douglas the Presicent. Call you this “harmonious Cemocracy’” Whea you next go forth on rade, which cne of the multitude of banners will you ng out over the General's tent? ‘There is vot a jury in the country, when the democratic party 1s arrayed for these appointments, that wil! not con. vict them of making s bargain with the disunionists aud abolitionists, and then paying them largely for it.
