Throngbout yesterday, Artbur Spring maintained the bearing of hardihood that be has almost uniformly exhi bited for sometime. He was kept as much as possible to himself ovly the spiritual advisers appointed to wa't om him, end the necessary officer: of the prison, beimg admit: ted to his cell. There was ro ‘oken of contritioa or of am acknowledgment of his guilt, and bis conversation was a shocking tissue of blasphemous allusions to the Saviour, of complaints against the iaw, and of contradictory as- sertion- im reference to the tragedy for which he was to suffer. Rev. Mr. Alexander, the moral instructor of the prison, was with him allday yesterday aud last night,aod during most of the time he was accompanied by Rey, Joaa street and Rey, Mr, Kensil. they were unwearied in thair alforts to turm his thoughts in a proper chanuel, and to induce him to make some sort of confession of the crime which everybody is convinced was committed by him, aad him alone. In the course of the interview yesterday morning, the condemned man becawe highly excited, and broke out into a wild incoherent prayer, exclaiming, in high tone Of voice, “0, Christ Jesus, how bas all this evil cvne upon me? All the world is against me! O why did you let them do it, do it? What 0, what have I doue that I should have been #0 persecuted? 0, I used to have friends; but pow, 0 now, in the hour of sorro #, no frievd saya good man what ails you! 0 dear. Odear me, [ used to have many friende, but where are they now? If any friend comes to see me, it ix to say that he thiaks I am guilty! ObowcanI bear it? After Mr Reed bad concluded, SPRING said, “I have no hope. Stoges, hecks, private carriages, and other vehicles, loaded with their buman freight, began to arrive at the prison at the hour of 8A. M., and long before the time aboutove thousand persons had congregated within its wails to witness the fearful scene. Ata fe~ minutes before 11 o'clock, the Sheriff eatered the cell of the culprit, for the purpose of preparing him for the gallows. THE PRISONER, Supported by Messrs. Street and Alexander, the Rev. Mr. ‘Allen of the Episcopal Chnrch and Rev. Mr Keusil, Marshal Keyser and Recorder Lee, ‘The Sheriff's Posse, Police Board 5,ecial Deputies from Sheriff's Office, Reporters of the Press. The rear was brought up by the numerous Deputies who had been admitted by Sheriff Allen. The clergy sang a hymn ax they passed along the eve- pue. in which the priscner joined. When the scaffold was peared, the Rey. Mr. Allen rend the beautiful and impressive service for the dead of the Episcopal Church, commencing with—“*lam the Hesur- rection and the Life,”” &e. The culprit mounted the scaffold with a firm step, and exbibived little or no emotion. Sheriff Allen, Marshal Keyser, and the reverend gentlemen uiready named, ascended vith him.
