Yesterday was a charming day, neither too warm nor too covl, the breeze that pre- vailed all dey preventiog any relaxing effects from the warmth of sol, Thermometer at noon 71 degrees. Fin —Yoaterday. shortly after twelve o'clock at noon, a Gre broke out in the planing and moulding mill situated on Jote Nos. 323 and 325 Fifth street, between avenue D | and Lewis street, by which a vast amount of damage bas been done. The lower part of the premises wero oc- cupied by Messrs Ingersoll and Vanderbilt, where the fire originated. supposed in the boiler room, whieh is situated below, and from where it spread to an adjoining build ing in the rear, formerly known as the New York and Brooklyn planing and moulding factory. but which h lately changed owners, and the name had been altered to Metropelitan planing and moulding factory, within the ant six weeks In addition tothe above parties, who are losers to great extent by the calamity, the adjoinin building, No. 327, occu ied by several parties who carried on different trades, such as sash makingand chair making, ‘was at one time in danger, and the property inside was much damaged by water. Apprehensions were {en- tertained at one time that the fire would extend ton row of private houses ip the rear, the entrance to which is by an alley from Fourth street, and the whole of the oc- cupants brought out their furniture in dread of sueh an event; fortunately their fear was groundless, the fire be- ing confined to the premises in Fifth street. The build Ii around, both in the above street and likewise in Pewia street, consist mainly of lamber yards or factories, in which timber in the princ! pal material employed, ao that if the fire had occured st night, there is no knowing to what extent its ravages might have extended. As it was, nearly two hours elapsed before the fire was extinguished ‘and even then there appeared some danger that it might break out afresh. Mesars, Ingersoll & Vanderbilt are in. sured for $2000, but they consider that this amount of insurance will not cover all their losses.
