The Panameno of the 22d April contains a copy of the treaty of peace entered inte between the repre- sentatives of the republics of Pera and Ecuador, in the city of Lima, on the 16th of March last. The Peruyian government, by this treaty, engage not to permit General Flores to reside within its dominions so long as the peace of Ecuador could be endangered thereby, and that all political exiles from whom dan- ger might be apprehended shall be sent into the in-s| terior from the coasts or frontiers. The adjudication, and disposal of the vessels, arms, and munitions of war which had belonged to Gen. Flores’ armament, is submitted to the arbitral decision of the Chilian gov- ernment, both parties binding themselves to abide by that decision. Both contracting governments also bind themselves to prevent any naval or land arma- ments being prepared on their respective territories destined to invade either republic, and shall not per- mit the passage of troops with a like object through their dominions, nor lend aid or assistance of any kind to the enemies of the other. From the Mercurio of Valparaiso of the 31st of March, we take the following notices :— The prosperity of Chili is rapidly increasing, through the profound peace which it enjoys and through the extraordi developement of its mines and agriculture, the principal sources of national wealth. In the 1852 the tithe in the diocess of Conception produced $166,897, while in the pre- sent year it has amounted to $211,106, or an in- crease of more than $45,000. No leas flattering is the condition of the great enterprise in course of construction. Conte forwards its grand work of extending the double track of railroad laid down. Concepcion and La Serena are actively en- gaged in realizing the happy thought of uniting eir respective ports of Talcahuano and Coquimbo by means of a railroad. The journal El Progreso, of Santiago, (Chili,)has been suppressed, in consequence of a very severe ar- ticle which appeared in its columns hostile to the introduction into the Feeble of the Jesuits. The following are extracts from the article in ques- tion :— Unfurl your red banner, sons of St. Ignatius, and reise your voices against heresy, which is the prosperity of the country, Expel the foreigner—tha\ thecivilizer— from our ranks. It matters not; support, we will combat you in the name of civilization and of the future. To day He are weak and miserable because a ray of light annihilates you—because you would disappear before it as Lucifer before-the manifes- tation of the God of Truth. Today you are weak because ‘our prestige is false, your power a lie, your faith an Tnposture, your character a sacrilege, your actions in- famy, your religion o burlesque, your fraternity sarcasm, ‘our virtue hypocrisy. Ye and yours are weak to-day, ecause you would not resist, nor could resist, with the aid of a hundred governments such as that which sup ports yeu, the powerful impulse of civilization and of the aie To-day the first step of this government con- sist in peopling our cities, not with laborious artisans and active foreigners but with vampires, clad in black, who come to nourish themselves on our blood—of im- postors, who come to consecrate ignocance s and barbarity —of idlers; who come to deceive Sipe inthe name of a divinity in which they do not believe, to favor their viees, to sanctify their infamies, and to frustrate the laws which condemn the guilty. vessels which entered inwards those perts sho that of these one belonged to Bremen, two to Meoklen- burg, fifty-eight to Norway, thirty-two to Prussia, one to Homburg, six to Portugal, three to Sweden—making in all 108 versels, of an’aggregate tonnage of 85,055 tons ; while the number of vessels which entered belonging to the United States] was only seventy-three, the tonnare of which was 86,354 tons. The arrivals from Great Bri- tain were 852, The entries outwards by sea wore: for Great Britain, 1,169 vessels; British colonies, 320; United States, 31, and other foreign countries, 37—making a total of 1,567; and as 430 vessels entered from the United States most of them must have obtained freights from Great Britain. There were built last year in Upper Canada four steamers, and five in Lower Canada, and at Quebec forty- eight sailing vessels—oue in Montreal and eleven in Up- per Camada—of an aggregate registered tonnage of 37,477 toms. The value of these vessels, estimating it at $40 per ton, would be $1,499,080, The exporte from Canada in 1852 amounted te $14,055,974, and the imports to $20,286,402. Of these there were :-— Im Hamilton, Canada We: $2,361,304 Toronto, do. 2,657,484 Ment: Canada Fast |, 985,382 De. vis Rouse’s Point _ Quebec: 2,591,219 The excess of imports at Montreal must have been from the United States, and the last year is the first in which there where any experts via Rouse’s Point, owing te the completion of the railroad in that direction. The balance of exports, amounting to $4,957,814, and ef imports, va- lued at $3,690,108, being chiefly at ports in Upper Ca nada—including a large pertion of those at Hamilton and Toronto—must also have been te and from this country. ‘With reference to coal, we find that there was imported into Montreal, in 1852, direct from Great Britain, to the value of $2,328 of that article, and from the United States $986, the market there being supplied from Que- bec, where the importation of that mineral amounted to 57,541 tons, valued at $86,892—about a dollar and « half per ton, it being brought out in vessels for ballast. The importation into Upper Canada was 14,261 tons, the esti mated value of which was $54,064—about $3 85 per ton. The cost of transportation to the upper province pre venting the importer in Quebec, even at the low rate stated, from competing with the mining eompanies im the United States for the supply of that portion of the country. ‘There are a number of eurious deductions to be drawn from th statistical returns. For instance, while the advocates’of the Maine Liquor law, in a recent debate in the Canadian Legislature, relied a good deal on the eost to a community arising from the use of intoxicating liquors, they do not seem to have been aware that it is exceeded by the use of tobacco. There was imported into that province last year brandy, gin, rum, whiskey, cor. dials and wine, of the estimated value, when imported, of $310,618, while that of manufactured and unmanufac- tured tobacco, segars and snuff, was $422,382, With re- ference to books, also, we find that while the importation of books from Great Britain and the United States was of the value of $290,192, that of those from foreign countries only amounted to $10,254, and this with » population of French origin in Canada of 695,945 souls out of 1,842,205, Aceldent at the Hoboken aay, FRANKLIN CE, Hopoxken, May 8, 1853. To THE Epiror OF THE Sin—I was a witness to a ‘terrible accident just new (half-past 8 P.M), on side of the Hoboken ferry. A young women leaving e boat (the chain had been let down) stepped between it and the landing whereby she suffered a compound fracture of the foot and lower bones of the leg. I presume she will die, as reheat tered aed she had to be carried jospital. To two causes this cruel occurrence is attributable— firstly, the niggardly lights on the landing, barely making * darkness visible,’ and secondly, to the absolute neces- sity that exists for some prevention in the shape of gates on the boats, f for in this instance the chain was rather leception, to preclude the temerity or ignorance of in- anes running such imminent risks. Pray speak out, for day by day the feeling heart is made to suffer by the shameless uplaity of the shareholders of every public company conveying passengers. Yours, % 2 A SUBSCRIBER. MONEY MARKET. Monpay, May 9—6 P. M. Although the money market continues easy and the tates of discount downward, the majority of financiers seem disinclined to invest their surplus funds in regular, fancy, or any other doubtful stocks that are offered. Old operators are extremely cautious as to what they touch now a-days, and the eonsequence is that very little has been done of late in that line of business. However, there was a slight improvement at the first board to-day, as compared with the morning sales of Saturday—parti- cularly in one or two mining stocks ; but then the trans- actions were so light as to scarcely merit attention. Phoenix Mining Company advanced 13¢ ; Cumberland Coal % ; Canton, 3 ; Morris Canal, % ; Hudson River Rail- road, 1; and Erie Railroad, %. At the seeond board Florence and Keyport went up % ; Erie Railroad, 34 ; and Nicaraugua Transit, %. Phoenix Mining fell offf1%, and Hudson River Railroad 34. These fluctuations, to- gether with the small number of sales, indicate that capitalists at present consider it more safe and lucrative to invest their money elsewhere than at the exchange board. ‘The annual election for officers of the Board of Stock Brokers was held this morning. ©.
