FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. eee MONEY MARKET. Frivay, April 15—6 P. M. ‘The upward movement in the stock market no. ticed yesterday still continues, but with diminished force. There was considerable activity at the first board to-day, apd most of the fancies advanced a fraction. Morris Canal went up } per cent; Florence and Keyport, $; Parker Vein, }; Phoenix, §; New Creek, 4; Erie Railroad, }; Norwich and Worcester, Rochester, Lockport and Niagara Falls Railroad, 5. Mew Jersey Zinc declined 4 per cent; Crystal Palace, 2; Cumberland Coal, 4; Potomac Copper Company, j; Panama Railroad, k. An active move- ment appears to be going on in Nicaragua, and there are strong indications of an important improvement. There is no reason why this stock should be so much depressed. The company are doing a splendid busi- ness, and its profits must be large. Parker Vein will take a start one of these days that will astonish those who have been unwise enough to sell the stock short. ‘The transportation branch of this company’s basi- ess will, without doubt, pey a handsome profit on its entire capital. Morris Canal is another | promising stock. Very large purchases have lately been made for Philadelphia account, and | there are heavy holders in this city who could not be induced to sell at. a handsome advance | on present prices. A land project, in connection | with the company’s property at Jersey City, is the | principal cause of the advance in market value. If this contemplated improvement is made, the actual value of the stock will ultimately be beyond all present anticipations. Cumberland Coal is decided- ly sick. It appears impossible to get up a movement in this stock except it is a downward one, and that it will be difficult to arrest. It is the impression of many who have visited the compayy’s property and closely investigated the company’s affairs, resources, and prospects, that in less than two years the con- cern will be #retrievably bankrupt. Hudson River. Harlem, Reading, and Erie Railroads, do not move mauch either way. The bears have got lately made | an onslaught on either one of them, being satisfied | for the present to keep a moderate line of contracts outstanding. ~The probability is that those stocks | which at present are buoyant and have every appear- ance of improving will not long be sustained. Seve- ral of them have all the elements of increasing | value, but the’ evidences do not seem to be yet strong | enough to insure permanency in avy rise in market | value. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Tressnr- | er of this port to-day amounted to $102,171 71; | payments, $7 30—balance, $6,983,675 45. | There was nothing new at the second board. The | demand has somewhat subsided, but prices remain | about the same. | Foreign exchauge for remnitianes by the steam- | ship Atlantic, from this port to-morrow (Saturday) for Liverpool, has thus far been quite We have no change of consequence to make in our | Sales, Bills on London we quote at 94 a 94 per cent | premium; on Paris, 6f/15 a 5f.13§; Amsterdam, | 403 a 41; Bremen, 7940 794; Hamburg, 36] a 334. | The steamship America, at Boston, from Liver- | pool, does not bring any important or interesting | financial or commercial news from Europe. The | principal markets, both as regard prices and de- | mand, remain nearly the same as previously quoted. No change in American securities. | The Boston Journal, of the 14th iast., says:— Holders of stock in the Edgeworth Company, on the | 9th instant, are entitled to their proportion of the new | stock, by paying therefor at the average price of sales | at the stock board on the 12th, provided notice of their | intention to do so is given to the treasurer of the cor- | transfer agent in New York, on | The sales on which the valua- tion is based, were 100 shares at 53%, and 200 at 57. | if any one im this city can tell us what all this | means, we should like to be informed. The move. | ments of this Edgeworth Land Company, for come | time past, bave been of rather a mysterious character. | Tt might, with a great deal of truth, be called a close corporation. The stockholders have not seen or hearti of a report for three or four years, and no one | outside of the direction (and we doubt much if there | is inside) knows anything about the position or prospects of the company’s affairs. business of the management appears to be issuing new stoek. The Great Northern Lead Company have just re- ceived from their mine in St. Lawrence County a large collection of rich and beautiful specimens, and a sample of their lead, cast into pigs, a large quantity of which will be in the market in a few days, The — prospects of the stockholders are peculiarly bright, and the fact that large returns will be realized is | placed beyond all question. Casualties may delay the result, but cannot seriously aifect the interests of | the compary, which was organized, not for stock Fpeculations, but with the avowed object of developing the resources of the nines, and they are carrying it | bt out with praiseworthy judgment and energy. The | beautiful collection of specimens may be seen at the | Re office of the company, No. 47 Wall street. After adjournment of the first board to-day, Mr. | 5S. It has been occasioned by the in creased demand which has set in from country bayers and local jobbers. These have allowed their supplioy to diminish, until they have nearly ail disappeared from the stores wherein they were exhibited previous to dis. tribution, On this account dealers are disposed te opor rate with greater freedom, which inclination, with the evident falling off in the imports, exerts a very salutary influence upom the business here, which now affords stronger indications of a prosperous spring traffic than it has done for some time back. The inquiry for brown shootings and shirtings bas been more animated, aad « 2 | the mile, vbliterate seven entire miles of o fe pane tae feteh very full and shirtings are very freely | are very readily purchased at the quotations given in our last. Lawns do not appear quite so brisk. Dealers have been holding back for the sale of Lodi goods, which is progressing to-day. Messrs. Haggerty, Jones & Co. are | the auctioneers, and the catalogue which they are sell- | ing embraces the entire products of the Lodi Works up | te this date. It is unusually rich, and likely to bring | satisfactory prices. Some of the styles offered are quite | Bovel and creditable. We are informed that the cloths | upon whieh they are printed were imported from Eng- | land; but this fact does not detract from the merit due | to the Lodi Company for the skilful and tasteful manner | in which they have been finished. Nankins are ns last represeated. Osnaburghs are uoithor abundaat nor ae tive, but maintain their former value yery well. Printing cloths are not freely taken, ax there prevails among buyers an impression that the pretty ample and nccumulating stock will occa- | sion a degree of languor in prieos that may enable | purchasers to obtain supplies at casier rates than (hose now current.
