In the meantime, an affi davit was made against the agent of the Mayor, charging him with having used seditious laoguage, Xc.,’ solely, { Delieve, of harassing or preventing the said agent from taking any active part, in case he sbould have thought Beoeasiry todo so; upon which he was arrested, and obliged to enter into heavy bonds for keeping the peace— especially inst the city. Three days passed in this manner, and the day for tbe ejection arrived. At about noon, the employes being at dinner, a party of some thirty persons, of all nstions and colors, headed. by the City Mnrshal, and commanded by Major James Lyons, (a colored gentieman,) and Captain Benjamin Mooney, arrived at this point to commence their work of destruction, being provided with necessary instruments for such urpores; which destruction they commenced by tearing a the American flagn which were waving above the house and other buildings, ard then wantonly destroyed the whole of the property, not even giving my employes time to eave the articles in the houses, with the excep- tion of few. In tearing down the babaings, these persons more like tigers falting upon their pray, than human beings. Resistance could not be o‘fered, be- cause a leader and arms were wanting. and all had to look on in silence on the destruction, until the work was finished, which left all of us houseless without the meaas of providing for our men the necessities of life, and ex- posing them to the inclemencies of the weather at this season of the year, and in such a sickly country as thia What have then, tu enpeot et che expiration of the term ret by the said ordinance, of ejecting us from all the balance of the property—which time wil expire M a very few days? -The worst! the worst! Here we are without arms, and without protection in any way what- ted to be robbed by a set of unprincipled nothing to lose, and who act, and who are, de facto, the auth rity of the city of San Juan del Nort», or Greytown, of our property, jeopardizing the safety of our persons and lives, and leaving us to pretect ourselves. without the means our hands to do so. It is new nearly a year since an American ship of-war hes this port—therefore this state of affi aving Americana and an American company, having a very large amount invested in the pursuit of their business, unprotected, ‘and at the mercy of such a lezalized band of land pirates. To speak of protection from our govern- ment appears to them a farce. They think that the United States government cannot protest herself, much Jess American citizens and property abroad: therefore they tear down with impunity the flag of our country, and all hat is wanting is their trampling the same under their feet. ‘The British government has a steamer of war coming in here every now and then, and during the pendency of | the difficulty and before the destruction of the property, application was made to H B. M. steamer Gazer, to pro- tect the ccmpany; but the answer of her commander ‘Captain Wilson) was, that ‘he had no instructions om his government to interfere with or protect the Accessory Transit Company; his instructions only re- lated to the At’antic and Hcific Canal Company ” The English Vioe Consul here, Mr Foote, was requested to protect our interests; but he refused, advising us very kindly to seek protection from the very authorities and persons who were seeking the destruction of our pro- ry. ‘The agent of the Access it, received notice, several mont ard of Directors of said comp: hat the government had sent, or would immediately send, out a ship of war; but up to this time no vessel has arrived. If one does not come very soon, it ix likely that but very few Ame- tieans will be left here able to tell their beer fa Being Ps mapriy abandoned by their government, the autho- ies of San Juan de! Norte or Greytown think and be- lieve that they can with impunity rob them of their pro- y, and murder them if necessary. 4 In conclusion, it ia but justice to say that there are but few Americans in the whole town of San a del Norte or Greytown, and they are, numerically, too weak to terfore in the matter. ef an American ship of war before it will be too late.
