Warnxspar, March 30--6 P. M.-~ There was rather less activity in the stovk market today. Yesterday's prices, however, were pretty well maintained at the first board. Panama Rail- road advanced 1; Florence and Keyport, 4; and Har- Jem Railroad 4. Among those which fell off were the Cumberland Coal Co., 1; New York and New Haven Railroad, 4; Nicaragua Transit and Morris Canal, cach j. The various other classes of stooks closed af the figures of the first board yesterday, with the exception of the Parker Coal Company, fifty shares of which changed owners at 37, buyer thirty days. At the second board there seemed to be still Jeas disposition to make purchases, and the conse- quence was that Hudson Second Mortgage Bonds declined 4; Florence and Keyport, 4; Cumberland Coal, 4; Parker Coal, 2; and Phoenix Mining, 1. Brie improved 4, and Harlem }. -The Assistant Treasurer at this port to-day re- ceived $163,354 76; paid, $66,215 57—balance, $7,326,014 70. The receipts at the Custom House yesterday foot- € up $143,772. There have been one or two changes in the of- ficers of city institutions which it may be ag well to notice. Mr. 0.°8.M. Bassets has been elected to and accepted the cashiership of the Hanover Bank. He at present occupies a similar post in the Taunton Bank, Mass. Mr. Clark having resigned the Presi- dency of the Merchants’ Insurance Company, Mr. @. V. B. Ostrander has been chosen to fill the va- cancy. We understand that the Director of the Philadel- phia Mint anticipates being able to issue the new ailver coin, authorized by the late act of Congress on or about the 16th proximo. The mint has about five hundred thousand dollars worth of silver on hand. The past week's business in dry goods has been Jess extensive and less profitable than the transac- tions of previous weeks. Importers and first class factors have not been called upon so often, and as they retain large and increasing stocks, especially of fenoy fabrics, they have shown a solicitude to re- alize, even at rather lower rates than they generally ask; but they have failed to secure purchasers, who do not wish to buy more than they immediately need, and such lots they can procure on the most reasonable terms from jobbers, these possessing am- ple supplies, composed alike of direct importations and second-hand purchases, which cost the owners as little as the assortments held and offering by regular importers. This is one of the many tran- sitions in progreasin the dry goods traffic. It chiefly originated in the recently acquired affiuence of deal- ers,-who thought that as they had the means they ‘would do well to send their own orders for goods to the manufacturers, and thus secure whatever profits might arise from the exolusion of importers. By acting thus they have prospered, and they may per- petuate their success if they will but duly heed the sound admonitions afforded by the past history of ‘the business in this city. So far, operators have not been es careful in their movements as they might; but we are in hopes that hereafter no effort will be mpared to easimilate as much as possible the produc- tion and consumption, or the supply and demand, as auch @ course would obviate all probabilities of 4oaa, which is usually entailed upon dealers by sur- plus stocks, that are generally sold at ruinously low oash prices, or on credit, to parties who, unfortu- nately, very frequently take goods at rates which they design only to pay in part, if at all. Brown sheetings and shirtings are moderately dealt in at the quotations of last week. Bleached goods are more abundant, but are in fair demand, and firmly held, a8 follows Smo 2 28 2 Newbu: Ty port. 86 BL Now York Mills... 36 Bh 10% Do. We have no particular change to note in lawns; they are bought only in small parcels, at uni- form quotations. Nankins are quiet, but steady. Osnaburgs are plentier and less inquired for, but are unchanged in value. The hope of a reduction in prices of printing cloths, induces buyers to limit ‘their purchases, and these goods are therefore inac- tive. Prints are not generally sought after, the fancy and novel atyles being the only objects to which the attention of buyers is directed; prices are languid and inclined todroop. Neither stripes nor ticks have varied much. The following is a comparative state- ment of the shipments hence between March Ist and 30th ;— 1862. 1853. Deorvase. | Cotton goods, pkgs... sesss 6,429 1,638 4,786 Woollens are daily becoming more active; this in creasing animation is the result of a disposition to purchase freely,- occasioned by the opinion which obtains among dealers that the enhanced value of | the raw materials and of the imported manufac tures will augment the worth of domestic fabrics. lndeed, there is little reason to expect anything else than an appreciation. The demand for substantial clothing mater hereafter to@xist, for surpasses the production, and hence there © ihe gods ofiering, which will undoubtedly advance iv price a8 the consumption gains on the stock. | | Holders are not now willing to part with any mer- very, firm, the tenor of the market for them being favorable to producers. While a few of the most desirable makes of cassimeres are in request, these goods generally are quiet and depressed. Cloths are more sought after, and were they more abundant a large amountof sales might be effected at remunerative rates. De- lnines sell slowly at former prices. Flannels are in | light but admirable supply, and held very firmly at figures above the present market range, but probably leas than those which will prevail during the coming season. Jeans are exceedingly quiet and heavy. The | best styles of linseys are in demand, at 2c. a 22c. Satinets are pretty freely dealt im,and rule firm. Tweeds are inactive, at unaltered rates. Foreign | Manufactures are becoming very dull. The supplies | are ample and aceumulating, which the wants of the country, unsupplied by domestic fabrics, are | diminishing. In this way the trade lingers until the | revival of inquiries, which parties think will afford some relief to the market, and thus prevent any se- rious revulsion in the business. But it is greatly to be feared that any demand that may arise will be much too moderate to require for its satisfaction all the goods now here and expected ‘to ar- rive- within a month. Should the wants of | dealers not equal the stock, this must prove | such a burden to the ae ae a eee ti own worth, and damage the p trade.
