Spring Fashions in New York. OPENING DAY AT THE MILLINERY ESTABLISHMENTS. to pursue ‘the even tenor of its way,” and society has replied to the saxcasms vf cynics, and solaced ita ‘wounded vanity, by urging that ‘‘ fachions were made by fogs for wise men to wear.” Being thus satistied of the necessity of prererving an clegant exterior, the well-to-do portions of mankind have made dross study. But in ‘erder to save them-elves tha trouble of designing pat- terns, and to preserve @ uniformity of cut and color, they eonventionality, adhere closely to the regulations made by the leaders of la mode. In France, England, America, and other countries, certain seasons have been set apart for changing the styles.of dress. At those periods the fair portion of creation are ever in a flutter to know the new farhion;and to mect their anxious inquiries, and please their fancies, the milliners prepare the bonnets, espe, and hats, and deck out their stores as their tastes dictate. ‘The ladies of New York have been some time on the qui vive with regard to the spring fashions, and their anx- feties were relieved by the rotices that appeared in friends the milliners would be prepared to satisfy their eariosity. The day being thus named, visiting parties ‘were made up among the Jadies, and, on the part of the milliners, there has been the greatest displays of energy * to}ave all things in readiness for those who might honor *\% them with a visit. On the part of both, expectations * were wrought up to the highest pitch. But, alas! they were doomed to disappointment. ) The day, the great day, was most inauspicious, being 4 ehilly and windy. To enhance the dircomforts, the Street Commissioner, fuiling in politeness to the fair sex, had ‘easily conceived—the dust rolled up before the wind in clouds; at the corners of dilferent streets, particularly, | f, the pedestrians had sore trials, for their clothes were | tee covered and their eyes became filled with dust. The ; ladies wisely forebore venturing out under such circum- stances. A few, however, who were unable to restrain their anxiety to sec the fashions, satistied their autiosity without being inconvenienced with the dust, by the help ef carriages, snugly ensconced in which they bade de Y fiance to the weather. ‘Thus, in the noighburhood of those stores in Broadway, Canal, and contiguous strocts, which had been advertised as containing the fashions Grove off with their occupants, others drew up. The show rooms of the advertised stores prosented a truly gay appearance. caps, hats, and mantillas, of more colors than the rain- bow, and the eyes of the visitera knew not on which to rest, nor which to admire the most. The gaiety of the scenes was enhanced by the bustling about of the mil- liners, and the pleasure and delight which were displayed | ‘on the faces of tho elegantly dressed ladies who were | surveying the different articles, and ever and anon exam- ining with unalioyed gratification a hat that had parti- eularly struck their fancy. The prevailing fashions were hate with trimmings on the ribbons, embroidered capes trimmed with ribbons, @eep fiunts, close crowns. Straw bonnets were in abun- dance aud were trimmed more than usual. Leghorn were adorned with feathers; others were trimmed with flowers and feathers; crape bonnets had many flowers outside, and were expensively trimmed ; white bonnets embroidered and trimmed with white flowers ; green silk bonnets, trimmed with lilac. Very few grees bonuets with feathers, French hats, trimmed with ribbons and flowers, which, | 4% is supposed, will be very much worn, as also a light and dayk shade of linen hat. Lilac, trimmed with white Blond and flowers. Black veils will generally prevail. The hats generally were made with falling crowns, rising at the top, close at the ears, and principally ribbon bon- nets, very thin and gossamer like. Many hats, with wreaths all around and ornamented with yold risbons, particularly in the case of straw bonnets, the effect of which will be cousiderably heightened. ‘The mourning fashions consist of rich mourning mil- Unery mantles, chimisets, habits, and rich flowers. The | bonnets are full, and there are very few with cap crowns. They were of thin luee and straw. The mantles have points and ruflies. Mantles are. generally, of the yoke talma shape, and * of various colors, suitable to the dresses of the wearers. | Such are the spring fashion: New York Trade Sales, ‘ The extenrive trade sele of books, stationery, &c., was + wesumed with unabated spirit, at the rooms of Messrs. Bangs, Brothers & Co., yesterday morning. The attend- ance of purchasers and agents was very numerous, the mart being quite crowded before noon, The varied and very valuable contributions of Messrs. D. Appleton & Co., of ibis city, were rst offered, and sold without reserve. The stock wan most extensive, embracing travels and tales, illustrated poetical works, law books, the sermong ef eminent divines, and college and text books, in the Lat- in, Greek, French, German, Italian, Hebrew, and English laxyuoges. all written by authors of note. Tho books sent fm by Mr. Henry Carey Baird, of Philadelphia, came next, and were to bo succeeded by those of Thomas McElrath, and © C. Chi'ds, of New York; Lippincott, Grambo & Co, Philadelphia; Derby & Miller, of Auburn, and man: ether firms ‘the house of Lippincott, ‘Grambo Go. cent in some magnificent standard editions of the book of Common Prayer, illustrated with steel Plater, and in sizes suited for the pew, pocket, or lady's Fetieule. ‘The prices obtained were r+munerative with- out being exorbitant, and promise to ensure a tair foot- ing. buih te the trade and public, dariag the year. The reputation of the publichers, with the fine style in which the books were got ont, obtained a good price for some works of not much real intrinsic value, particularly po- étical productions. So that— ‘If the lines sbould only line portmanteaus, ‘Trede will be all the better for the cantos.”” The auctioneer had not reached the stock of Mr. Edward Mifler, of Philadelphia, when our reporter left. It is pur- vorea’ to commenre with the contributions of Robert Carter & Brothers, New York, this morning. FasminG AND PRraveR —The Governor of Connecticut has, by proclamation, ordered that this’day be observed throughout the State as a day of fasting and prayer; and | * that in all places of worship, and wherever two or thros are gathered together in His name, the burthen of aching | and heavy hearts may be laid before the Lord, and His merciful intorposition invoked in bobali of all who need the Divino assistance ; that He will cleanse from sin <" whatever hae doen roiled or injured by its blighting touch, , and make the period of humiliation before His throne ahe springtime of uew hopes aud purposes, which shall ripen into the peaceable fruits of righteousness.
