ARRIVAL OF THE GLASGOW. ONE DAY LATER FROM EUROPE. STATE OF THE MARKETS, &e., ke, Ke. ‘The screw steamship Glangow, Captain Craig, arrived yesterday afternoon from Glasgow, whence she sailed on ‘Thursday, the 24th ult., at two o’cloek in the afternoon. She brings sixty-eight cabin and one hundred andeighty steerage passengers. ‘The Emperor of Austria was going on well. His wound ‘was sbout two inches deep. The prisoner declares he had no accomplices. At Lioyds, the arrivals reported were light, but up- wards of 400 vessels were in the Chops of the Channel, on waiting favorable winds. ‘The Sun says the Bank of Eagland had not yet intimated ita intention to lend money on stock at two per cent per annum during the shutting, but it was gene- rally understood that will be the rate. The London Standard’s city article states that the news from Turkey is not regarded in a very serious light, aa arrangement with Austris being considered as certain. In the British House of Commons, on the 234 ult., an debate on the Maynouth Grant was resumed, nd termimated in a division, ia which there appeared « sjority of thirty against the grant. Ninety eight +hips, representing upwards of forty ‘theusend tons, are at present advertised for sailing from the port of London alone, to New South Wales, South Austra’in, Now Zealand, and Van Dieman’s Land. TEE EXODUS FROM IRELAND TO AMERICA. ‘The Western Siar gives a melancholy sketeh of the suf- feripgs of the poor for the last two months, owing to the want ol employment eonsoquent upon the impossibility of proceeding with outdoer labor during the late severe weather. Great numbers were compelled to resoit to the workhourea, and more who have been fortunate enough to receive remittanoes from their friends and relations in “We have reason to know (continues the S/ar) that several of our poor people, who had intended to remain in the country for some time longer, in the hope of real- 2 mnall sum by their own labor, and thereby be en- abled to make their voyage in more comfortable trim, on of employment, thought better of at once taking their departure, fearing that, if they remain- friends in America would be expended in trying to keep Dody and soul together, and thus, perhaps, their chance of being able to emigrate would Lave been gone for ever. Owing t0 this state of circumstances, we have had no Cessation to the ‘exodus,’ notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, which heretofore gave some pause to the Outward movement, but which, in the present imstance, as we have shown, has rather tended to increase it. That the emigration is becoming serious—alarmingly so—we believe is pow pretty generally admitted, and some are beginning to ask if no weanscan be taken to keep ‘the people at home. For our own parts. we now despair Of seeing a stop to the drain of our population ex- cept that which may proceed from sheer exhaus- tion—in other words, the ewigration will cease only when the be ulation is drained out; for it must be borne in mind that there is scarcely an instance of a family, or members of a family, locating in the republic, which does not send the means for an equal number of those lef: behind to join them before the lapse of many months; so hat when you now talk to au Irish peasant of remaining at home, he at onee tells you that his house is across the 4'lantic; that he was long enough homeless in the land of his birth; and that he intends to lose no time in joining ‘his people across the water;’ for it is another ‘sign of the times’ in which we live, tuat the Irish peasant does not at present look upon a voyaue across the Atlantic with half the dread bis father felt at crossing St. George’s Channel, when he ¥5 wont to proceed to England at harvest time, 4o earn as much money 4s puid fur their hovel and con acre—in those days when the Irish peasantry were, in the language of the Levon Cowmissioa, ‘the worst fed, worst housed. worst clothed’ population on the face of the civi- Tiged world.” Turning to the southern counties, the Waterford Chronicie thus reports prog: eso:— ‘© We have every prospeet of the present emigration being very much augmented during the present year. Notkting that oan be said or done will avert thia; sovchet the best thing we can do is rather to endeavor to divert ‘that emigration to whet aay be the best course in which todirect it. The accounts we are daily receiving from ‘Australia: of course have a teudeney to turn attention al- most exclusively to that quarter the prosperity of the colony being now pleced on so permanent @ basis that it is no er & matter of speculation as to the chance of a man succeeding there Uur quay was literally alive yea- terday with pas-engers to Liverpool en route to America. Not fewer than 380 or 400 of our country people crowded the deck of the Mars steamer. quitting for ever that soil which, under wholerome government, is fully equal to the requirements of thrice its present population. We cannot but deplore that so many are going from our shores; but the hope we have is, that a check will speedi- ly take place. Men will be sought after, and not, as they ene now, seeking emplayuran®, Ur guenpiting! for land." MARKETS.
