As the accommodations for | wually long recess. the public in the Council chambers are very limited, and as there are no ‘reserved tats,” the anxious citizens ‘will do well to be in atés at an early hour. Per- formances commence at 'clock, punctually. Go early, and. secure good seats; otherwise you will have | to take astandee. The late and presentdoingsat Albany, and the threatened interference with our municipal vights, will of course be canvassed. Further action in the matter of the Broadway grant, save in the courts of Jaw, is, we presume, effectually stayed; but they have ample cause and subject for council and ‘talk.’” The question as to the Russ pavement for the Bowery ‘will most likely be revived during the session, and there must necessarily be a large accumulation of papers on minor matters of business—the boards not baving met since the fourteenth ofJanuary, or upwards of three weeks. 4 me oa yn Beturdey last lar Chay my. y ry asain was mate ee Justice Stuart, embracing some \ery remarkable facts, touching a charge of biga- may against William I. She continued to receive his attentions- for several months, and then he asked her hand in may ce; she consentcd, but wanted to see the papers of ivorce. Eatchelor neglected to show them, by putting her off from | time to tine, saying that the papers were in the possea- sion of -his lawyer; and in order to satisfy her on that | point, introduced to’her a man calling himself Shep- herd, whom he said was a magistrate, and krew all the circumstances connected with the divorce. Shep- herd corroborated all the circumstances as represented by Batchelor. Miss Dockstoder, at this time being but serentcen years of age, and easily persuaded, felt satisfied and believed all that was as stated. Soonatler this inter- view Batchelor brought to the house Mr Shepherd, the pretended magistrate, and, by the request of Batchelor, performed the marriage ceremony. _ After the perform: ance of the marriage, Batchelor and Miss Dockstoder re- sided together as man and wife for nearly three years. A short tie since the fact has been shown that Batche- lor had not procured any divorce, and. was, therefore, not lawfully permitted to marry a second woman; and further, that Shepherd was an impostor, and had falsely represent- ed himself to be @ magistrate, merely for tho pur- ose of practicing the deception as above described. justice Stuart, on the facts, issued his warrant for the arrest of Batchelor, on a charge of bigamy, and for the arrest of Shepherd on a charge of misdemeanor ia falsely Tepresenting himself in, yersonating the oficial capacity | of a magistrate, Officer Bilger arrested Batchelor, au conveyed him before the magistrate, who committed him to prison to await a further examination, The officers ug yet have not been able to find Shepherd. jurglary and Arrest of the Burglar.—Ofiicer Baldwin yesterday arrested a youag man named Thomas Rowe, ha chage of breaking into the liquor atore of John Cos geove, in Canal street; also forcing open a desk, and stealing therefrom a gold pencil case, and various broken bank bills.
