"FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Sunpay, Jan. 16—6 P. M. Throughout the week just closed the stock mar- ket has been moderately buoyant. From day to day the transactions were to about the same extent» and prices in several stocks have been steadily work- ing upward. All the coal stocks, Morris Canal, New Jersey Zinc, Long Island, and Cary Land Company, have been in demand, and higher prices ruled at the close yesterday than at the opening on Monday last. ‘There is no particular movement in any leading fancy. The bulls have taken hold of Long Island with a good deal of spirit, but prices have not | as yet become much inflated. The recent decline in this stock has not yet been forgotten by speculators, and it will be difficult te getup much of a corner again. Morris Canal was quite active at the first | board yesterday, and buyers are evidently quietly getting all the shorts they can. The bears do not seem at all under the impression that this stock can go much beyond present prices, and the probability | is that the shorts will get caught before they are | aware of it. The coal stocks are in good hand: ‘These are steadily increasing in market value, with- out any great speculative excitement, which is a | guaranty that the improvement will be more perma: | nent, | ‘At the close of the second board yesterday, there wasan active demand for the stock of the Phoenix | Coal Company. There were sales at forty-two per | cent for cash, and considerable stock changed hands at that price. Within the past few days orders to some extent have been received from Boston and other cities, and the stock is rapidly becoming distributed. ‘The immense landed property of the company, in the very centre of the great Cumberland coal region, in the Westernport district, has become enormously val- uable by the recent discoveries of new coal veins, and public attention has therefore been turned more parti cularly to the developement of its resources. As this | fact: becomes known, and the working of the prin pal fourteen feet vein progresses, holders of the stock will, without doubt, raise their prices to points fullas high as other companies command. We can form some idea of the great value of the twenty-two thou- sand acres of coal land belonging to this company, from the fact that sales have recently been made in its immedia e vicinity at prices ranging from $300 to $500-per acre. The single vein which has already been opened, upon which miners are now at work, is estimated by experienced engineers to contain eleven millions of tons on a tract of five hundred acres of and known as Pleasant Hill. This is but a small | portion of the coal property of the company. The supply of coal from these mines is only limited by the ability of the railroads and canal to get to market. We are afraid the absence of carsand canal boat: | will keep back a great deal of Cumberland coal; but | the Phenix Company have already perfected such | arrangements as will secure the transportation of at least two hundred thousand tons during the present Beason. The exportation of specie from this port during the past week was as annexed:— Saupwents oF Srrcrn FROM THE Port or New York. The Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Com. | pany have declared a dividend of two dollars a share. The Kensington Gas Company have declared a semi- annual dividend of five per cent. The Little Schuyl kill Navigation Railroad and Coal Company have de- clared a semi-annual dividend of four per cent. The | Bank of the Northern Liberties has declared an extra dividend of seven anda balf per cent; the stock- holders are notified to pay the ninth instalment of five dollars per share, on or before the first proximo. ‘The Farmers’ Bank of Kentucky has declared a divi- dend of five per cent. The Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Company have made a di dend to those holding stock on the first day of Jann- ary, 1863, as follows:—three per cent interest and six per cent in scrip on fall stock for the past six months, and pro rata on other stock for the time it bas been paid. This dividend of nine per cent will leave $25,- | 000 surplus. The Perpetual Insurance Company of St. Lonis has declared an annual dividend of 35 per cent. ‘The Marine Insurance Company, of the same city, | has declared an annual dividend of 55 per cent. Massachusetts Cotton Mills four per cent, semi- annual. Hamilton Woollen Manufacturing Com- pany, three per cent, payable on demand. There is no doubt but that we are about entering upon a business season of an unprecedented character, both in regard to extent and general pros- | perity and productiveness. The Cumberland Telegraph says the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is in good navigable order. On Wednesday they had a fall of snow, but the ground was too wet for it to lay avy length of time. For the week ending Wednesday noon, fifteen boats had departed, laden with 1,519 4-20 tons of coal and £0 15-20 tons of coke. During the week ending the Sth instant, 3,605 tons of coal were transported over the Mount Savage Railroad, and 3,428 tons over the read of the Cumberland Coal and Iron Com: pany. The increased expenditure has been on ac- count of repairs to track and bridges, and the intro- duction of heavier motive power in the transporta- tion department, to meet the increased business offer- ing. Notwithstanding the expenditures of the past year, there has been paid to the Treasurer of Mary- land, during the fiscal year of the company, | $78,230 68, of which $60,000 was in the fiscal year _ of the State. Since the close of the company’s fiscal | year, a further payment has been made to the Treasurer of Maryland of $25,000. We are opposed to every system of banking that extends the basis of the circu- | lation to the manufacturers and issuers of hank bills. | There.is in this no security, for every dollar of specie | in any bank in the country could be put out of the way of its creditors between two days. We have | known many such cases. The only way to secure | | the bill holders beyond all contingencies is to place the means for the redemption of bank issues in the hands of responsible State officers, beyond the reach or control of any one but those holding the banks promises to pay. Several efforts have been made in the Legislature of Pennsylvania to adopt a free bank- ing low, similar to that in operation in this and seve- ral other States, but so far they have been unsuccess- | ful. We have hopes, bowever, that its friends will yet accomplish the object they have in view, and that the people of Pennsylvania will yet rejoice in the establishment of a more perfect banking system | than they have now. The old banking systems are | rapidly giving way, and the stock security system taking their place. some of the free banking systems now in operation there are many defects, which in time of distrust | may prove disastrous; but improvements will be made as weak points are discovered, and, ultimately, as near perfection will be reached as possible. About | one half of the States in the Union have adopted the free banking, or stock security system, and the paper currency of the country is now better than ever be- fore known. We trust the people of Pennsylvania will yet their eyes open before it is too late. CITY TRADE REPORT. Satcrpay, Jan. 15—6 P.M.
