Sir—Tbe melancboly catestrophe that bappened s few days since to the pilot boat Yankee has seemed to pasa upheeded by the public, and without comment, Yet there is ample field not only for sympathy. but forreliefandas- sistance, to the widows and orphan children of those who £0 suddenly and unexpectedly met & watery grave. The young men who owred and sailed this bitherto lucky, but now unfortunate vessel. we know to be both enter- prising and worthy. and. like many more of the hardy pilots of our port. ever ready to brave any danger. or un- dergo any suffering, for the safety at benefit of our commerce, And there are. Messrs. Editors. in the city of New York mavy generous hearts who appreciate both the wants and woes of the sailor. and the widow aud the or- phen; and I believe it only needa an appeal to such fortunate company who have lost their all by that melancholy event. To replace their boat. and give the widows of those who were lost the same share they had in the Yankee. would be a most magnanimous thing; and by a little effort on the part of the press and a fer fluential individuats. this noble action might be accom- plished without being hardly felt by the many who would rejoice to contribute towards so good a cause A FRIEND TO THE SAILOR. Aytiropat Pspestrianism.—Mr. Sands, who has for some time past been exhibiting his wonderful antipodal feat at the Bowery Circus, took his benefit last night, and made his final appearance previous to his departure for England. For the information of those who have not witnessed bis performance, we will briefly describe it. At platform. about five feet in width, extends across the ring of the circus ‘The lower surface is emooth and polished. Mr Sands, by means ofa ladder. ascends into car depending fiom this platform. and having Acirculsr apparatus the lower face ot which somewhat reeembles that of a cymbal, he turned himself feet up- ward. by meanr ofa rope. and assumed @ perpendicular pesition. ‘Thus he elowly walked to the ond of the plat- form. where he took up, aud held for some time. a small boy that was reached to him. Then, with one foot alone attached to the ceiling, he maintained his dangerous po back and again got into the car, This feat is of a very astonishing character and one which reems to set the laws of gravitation at defiance.
