Honduras mabogany is not as expensive as either of the above, but is greatly used both in this city andin the country, The grain of this mahogany is not as hand- some as St. Domingo, and it is used chiefly for making chairs. Next in order comes Mexican mabogany, This deecription is farinferior to any of the above. and is used chiefly by cabinet makers, for inferior descriptions ot up- holstery. When used for pianos it is veneered with St, | Domingo crotches. Satin wood is now extensively used, both by cabinet makers in the construction of furniture, and for constructing the ares of the state rooms of steamships and clippers, Of late it has been very much | used for iis purpose, and consequently the importations have increased very much. It arrives at this market from 8t. Domingo, ‘and is very highly valued. Kose- wood has of late been extensively used in making pianos, chairs and sofas, &c. It is now considered | more fashionable than mahogany, and is fast taking its | place. It is very heavy and dear wood, and arrives at this market from Rio Janeiro. It is sold by the stick, | or by the pound, and is very valuable. The greater por tion of mahogany is sold at auction, and is bought both by city and country manufacturers A considerable portion is exported to Havre and California. To Havre it is exported in logs—to California, manufactured, and in boards. The exports to California have decreased of late very much. The amcunt of Mahogany manufec- tured in this city has lately decreased very much. It is now manufactured im the country to a great extent. There is a great deal of mahogany now used in the con struction of windiasses for clippers and steamships, althcugh in the cabins of this class of vessels rose and satin woods take the precedence of mahogany.
