The American Bible Union. ‘The apniversary of the American Bible Union com_ menced yesterday forenoon, at the Broome street Baptist Church. The attendance, both lay and clerical, was nu- merous. Dr Cone thon addressed the meeting He faid:—I have grown old in the services of my Master, so much #0 that f cannot read my own name without glasses, Brethren and friends, we give you a hearty welcome to this the Third Anniversary of the American Bible Union, Our bretbren have conducted their business with great alacrity, and have taken a deep interest in ourgreat work. But 6 great mavy try todiscourage us in this work. As far as the press is concerned, it has always been their pol- icy to pick out any flaws that they might find. The Eng. lich language is not its richoess and flexibility. There is no lenguage mm which. the scriptures are translated as they ure in this language; and is it possible that in this fine language there is no explanation for the word * bap- tizo.’ We must have the English Bible in a plain lan. gusge The werd baptizo means total immersion—not a mere sprinkling but the total submersion of the body; and yet there are those who will contend that a mere sprink- hug is suficient. Dear brethren, our path is made plain by the light of heaven. We must trust in the Giod of the Dibie. and not tre before men. Let us not be dis- heartened, but press onward. W.U. Wyckorr then read the annual Teport of the Board, of which we wake an abstract, as follows :— “he year has been one of singular prosper Con- siderable progress bas been made in the revision of the Spanich, French ond Englith Scriptures, Part of the | Spsxich'has been for rome time ready for’ stercotyp! but it bas been detained for the purpose of more tho- rough exsmination by different persons, The hizhest testimonials to the qualifications of the revisors haye been Teerived, a part of which is copied in the report, Con- tracts for the revision of the els and Acts, in French, bave been consummated with distinguished scho- lars im France, and the work is favorably progressing, The revisorsof the English Testament, both in England and this country. are steadily prosecuting their work A | Baltimore; B.S. He then went on to show how weak men were—weaker than warer. He illustrated the great conddence Peter had in himrelf; but when it came to the test he alone of all the dirciples Was the weak one. He had no doubt if they ‘Were blessed by Heaven. they were sure to succeed: but without that blessing, they could never expect to have their wishes crownea Rey Mr. Annrrace then addressed the meeting in very eloquent terms.
