There is nothing new in the stock market to-day; prices Lhroughout were pretty well sustained, and the demand continues active. Nicaragua Transit is steadily working upward, and the parties now purchasing have the power to carry to almost any point they please. Cumberland Coal is firmly held and while the books remain closed the operations will probably be limited, Reading Rall- road has moved up steadily, and at last touched par ‘That is a Gangerous point for such @ stock, and can only ‘be sustained at such a height with great difficulty ‘here are numerous buyers at present prices who murt -aloulate upon « further rise for profit, Erie Railroad aropped off alittle to-day, with moderate sales. There is too much new stock of this company coming upon the | ‘etesk ls concerned, pines rate igh eninge, eat. Ui 8 Gredinele at current rates; but if the commer is well abiy beyond what has already boom realised will probably take place. It may be well enough for those whe can tell this stook-et a profit to do so, amd keep qaiet for a time. It may go higher, but » proat im hand is, after all, the best. Mining stocks were not active to-day. There appears to be no anxiety among holders to sell. A new sine stock made its appearance in the market a few days since, and sold at five per cemt. It is called the New York Zine Company. Montgomery Mining Company was firm at yesterday's prices, and no stock offering, St. Lawrence Lead Company is improving, both im actual end market value. At the first board Harlem advanced 1{ per cent; Nica- ragua, 3s; North American Trust, {. Hudson River Rairoad declined + per cent; Florence and Keyport, ; Reading Railroad, +; Long Island, 3{; Cumberiand Coal, {. At the second board the sales of Nicaragua ‘Transit were large, at an improvement of 1% per cent on Prices current at the first board. Edgeworth advanced %{ per cent. ‘There has been an active demand in Boston, for some days past, for Edgeworth, but holders are not ‘ais. Posed to sell. The company’s finances are said to be in first rate condition. Harlem went up + per cent; Dauphin, 4, The market closed active and buoyant, and jtlooks very much as though it would not be difficult to get up quite an excitement. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $163,202; payments, $85,666 11—balance, $7,128,850 54. ‘The demand for foreign exchange this morning, for re- mittance by the Europa, was active, without variation in quotations, The steamer takes out $373,168 in specie. ‘The Hudson River Railroad Company have negotiated a loan for $1,000,000, bearing seven per cent annual in- terest, in Londs of $1,000 each, redeemable in fifteen years, withthe privilege of convertibility into stock in ten years from the Ist of May, 1855. The loan is nego- tiated conditionally that the present stockholders do not choose to take it at 90 per cent. Books of subscription are open, and will remain go till the 27th inst. ‘The carnings of the Albany and Schenectady Raitrosd Company for the month of August, and for the first week in September, in each of the past two years, were aa fol- lows :— Axnany axp Scrnesrctapy Rarnoan, Ree’ from passengers and fretght, Aug, 1852..$27,264 99 24/264 11 do, do, 1851., Inctease in favor of August, 1852....... i from passengers ftom Ist to 7th Sept , Tucrease in favor of 1852. The weekly and monthly receipts of this road continue to show a handsome increase over the corresponding weeks and months of last year. Under the present ma- nagement this road must prosper, and the traffic this year fur excceds the expectations of the most sanguine ‘The company are now crecting on Water street, adjoining the present freight depots, another freight house, twenty feet front on Water street and eighty feet deep, running tothe basin. The building will be entirely fire-proof, with iron doors, &c. The rapidly {uoreasing traffic with the West during the winter months requires this outlay. ‘The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad Company have declared a semi-annual dividend of two per cent—$1 per share—payable on the 1st of October, ‘The earnings of this road in August, were $80,500—the largest amount ever received in a single month, since its opening. The running expenses have been considerably diminished by doing away with horse power at the ter- mini of the road. In about two months the track renews] will be ecmplete, and a rail weighing 60 Ibs, to the yard will be laid the entire length of the road. The net earn- ings, which have for feveral years been over six per cent on the stock at par value. ($50 per share.) can then be spplied to the payment of regular dividends, instead of being partly taken. as now, to finish construction. The opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to Wheeling and the completion of lines connecting Baltimore with the South, are items also worthy of reflection, as having a direct and favorable besriug on the prospects of the Phi. ladelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore road. ‘The wild cat currency of Washington, D. C., has be. come so extensively circulated that it is about time the authorities of that city adopted somo measures to not only stop a further issue. but to compel au immediate re. demption of that already im ciroulation. The ewindling financiers of the day, who are continually on the look- out for some new way to fleece the community, have been driven out of nearly every State by the passage of the Free Banking law, which secures the bill holder be- yond a doubt. Thus restricted, these schemers have been driven into the District of Columbia, where we be- lieve there are no laws of any kind regulating banking These financiers have therefore the largest liberty, and within a very short period have palmed upon the public @ paper currency of the most worthless character. Only two—the National and the Bank of the Republic—of the ten or twelve banks represented as being located in Washington, have places for the transeetion of a legiti- mate banking business, and these are winding up as ra- pidly as possible. It will be difficult to tell frem what place the notes of the other banks are actually issued. Nominally, Washington-is the place of issue, but they have not, even nominally, a place of redemption, The public have the regulation of these banks im their own hands. By steadily refusing to touch the bills of any Washington bank, they will soon be driven out of circu- lation, and a further issue prevented. The paper cur- rency of States which have adopted the free banking system is perfectly sound and safe, and it is so easy to distinguish between those bills secured by deposits of Public stocks, and those which are not, that individuals are alone to blame if they get swindled by the banking financiers of Washington. ‘The report of the Commissioners of Public Works, o¢ Canada, gives the annexed statement of exports from Ca- nada in each of the past two years :— Commence or CarapamQuantity axp Vaive or Exronts. Judge Betts tT. 22.-- Sentence.— Tho District Attorney (Mr. 5S. District Court. J.P. Hall) moved the judgment of the Court on Reuben Bassford, who had pleaded guilty toa charge of larceny on the high | seas, of fifty-two ounces of gold dust, valned at ¢915. Mr. McMahon said that when the Court had assigned him as counsel for the prizener, he inquired the particulars of the case, and, under s edviec, the accused entered a plea of gu There were circumstances sur- life of the unfortunate young man I wished to Jay before the court. It appears that he ieft his home at the early age oi seven years, and had been cut oif by his father, a respectable man of business of this city. The prisoner has been in jail since July, and the robbery was committed twelve montis previous to that time. The money that he had stolen has been all long since spent, and if the Court think fit to inflict upon him the whole period of confinement, Mr. McMahon begged to say that the imposition of a fine would amount to perpetual imprisonment. The Court, in addressing the prisoner, told him that for the offence he had committed a very serious punishment was awarded.
