The British Minister at Washington has also been made to vaderstand the great imperiance of the fisheries to our own people. avd we may +afely caloulate that whatever is done by him wil be done with a view to subserve tho in- terest of britich North America. We have no derire to prevent our American neighbors from participating to a certain extent. in the benciits to bo derived from cur fich-ries, provided they grant us an equivalent; but w+ will never consent to give up our fish- ing grounds indisermipately to the Americans for all time to come The people of these colonies are perfectly willing to treat with them in a fur and manly spirit. but they may rest nseurcd thivall ‘beir energies will be ex- erted to preserve their velusbie fishing grounds from open Fpoliation, no matter by what nation it may be at- tempted Pf You may depend thst the article on the fishery question gives tbe true version of the views of the government of the province, whatevor the people poay think about the matter. Tho question is every day becoming of more con- sequence. During the weck the executive govern- mené held a protracted session, and adopted ** such measures as will place the views of the government fairly before the 1m periu! ministry.” Whether the acts of the provincial ministry will have suy weight with the home government yet re- maina to be seen. At any rate it is woll that the American people sbould know of every feature of this affair. Yours very reepeotfully, 8. Oar Nova Scotta Correspondence. Halifax has been visited by Com. Perry, inthe United States steamer Mis slssippi—a very tightly and efficiont yorsel. Tho commodore, as you will have learnt, was received hero, as well as at St. Jobn, with every demoustra tion of respect; and, doubtlesa, must have been much gratified with the nature of his reception. Nearly all the Catholic clergy at present in this city paio a visit en board during the stay of the Missicsippi, aud were received by the gallant com- modore aud bis officers in 4 suitable munner. IT also paid ber a viet, snd met wich every courtesy from the officers, particularly from Passed Midshipman Walter F Green, Esq:, who kindly showed our party over the ebip The commodore, in his steamer, and the admiral, with the Batisb steumsloop Basilisk, are now at Charlottetown, Proxee Eoward Isiand, conferring with Sir A. Banverman, the Governor, oa the sub- ject of the fisheries The statements that have appearcd in the Aweritan papers, that Mr Cramp- tou had étopped the seizure of fishing vessels, is all & mistake, 48 the instructions thet were given in the first instance bave not been varied The man agement of the fisvery dispute, as it has been eonductod by Mr Crampton so far, appears to have been @ mere furce ; and to mend matters, if the statements inthe American papers are correct, the British government have sent out Mr. Baring, brother of Lord A-hburton, to sottle the questior Bhouid be succeed on giving away our fisheries, ag upsuccesefully as bis brotper did with reference to the diaputed territory, the colovists will not be un- ler any very great Objigutions to the fumily. It strikes me, however, that some arrangement till be patched up in England—Euglish fishermen etaining the exclusive right to fab within three niles of the shore, where alone the mackerel Gshing fn be carried on to any advantage: that at a r distance being with book ine, while the sre on their way tothe bays andcrecks. If wy negotiations, however, are to take place at Washington, it appears to me, that the several col onies should send delegates, to remain there till they are concluded, and attend to our interests. The coveecration of the Roman Catholic Bish op of Fredericton, took place in this city on Sun- day, at St. May’s Catnedral; the ceremonies were op tered avd imposing ; and a large number of the Protestant portion of the community ‘Were present on the occasion An eloquent con! oration sermon was presobed by Archbishop Hugh of New York. The ciroumstanee of four Catholic prelates in full pontificals, being at ono altar at the @ame time, may never be seem again in Nova a ie. In Dr Connelly, the rew Bishop, Halifax loses a clergyman whose charities were unbounded, and Were given without reference to creed or party. The Catholics of New Brunswick have reason to be proud of bim. for they reo ive a diocesan, who, for genuine piety and general attainments, will stand Second to no other pre ate on the o»ntinent of Ame- rica. Such liberality will receive the high considera- baie _it undoubtedly is entitled to by a discerning public. Some individuals, however, are unokaritable enough to ascribe other motives than the generous prom peage of a good beart, to Mr. Law. For our- selves we look at things as they are, and ask, whe can doubt for a moment the oonsistenoy of Mr. Law’s characte’, in his efforts to serve his country- nt The evil minded persons who state that Mr. Law is attempting to drive off all opposition to his splen- did line of sea steamers, and then to establish a tariff ot prices to suit himee!f, must not be listened to; for charge so preposterous oarrics its own conviction with it. We are in favor of the largest liberty for the greatest number; and it is our confirmed conviction that facilities for travelliog on any route, has the effect of increa-ing the number of passengers. The Isthmus of Panama is no longer a bugboar to the traveller - The railroud from Aspinwall to Barbecoar being in excellent working ordor, and furnished, a4 it is, with superb accommodations, offers every faoility that can be realized in the United States. The officers of the road seem to take infinite pleasure in serving the travellers by that route, and they are reaping their reward in a daily inorease of pas- soncers.
