You cannot fail to have noticed the menacing tone which bas recently been assumed, in the editorials put forth by order of this government, for the purpose of overawing such of the inhabitants of Cuba who may have intentions inimical to their present rulers. It is hardly to be supposed that these menacing editorials, (which emsnste from the palace.) to which I refer, would be given to the public, were there not some reason or cause for {hus threatening the people, and thereby giving rise to suspicions that the irland of Cuba fs by no means in the cwjoyment of that profound tranquility, which such pains is (aken to induce us to believe is the case. ‘The people of Havana bave. for the last eight or ten days, becn laboring under the most intense excitement, soarcely exceeding, I am told that during the memoraple days of the disembarkation of the last expedifion under General Lepea For rome time past the government have, as it were, doubicd thair vigilance. ‘he issue of a clandestine sheet, advocating the independence of Cuba. which battled all the endeavors of the authorities to discover who were the sathors, caused General Canedo extreme annoyance, and the consequence bas been that great numbers of persons (including women) have been, and aro still being arrest- ¢d, and the houres of individuals liable to search, which is cariied into effect at all hours of the day and night. The arrest of the parties ¢iscovered about a fortnight 9g0 manviecturing ball cartridges, and the capture of about 14,000 of these catridges and some powder, led to further investigations. pon the intomation of a certain French Creole, the government, om the 18th of August, dispatched a force of fifty cavalry, under the orders of Colonel Guillen, who, it taatateo surprised a party of about 140 persons at a onging to one Gonzalez, in the Vuelta de gaged in making balls and cartridges, &e, He took from them a smali cannon and a considerable num- ber of muskets, which latter, it is supposed, were landed very lately from a suspicious locking schooner een on the const, suppored to have been sent by the Cuban Junta from New York, The forte are full of prisoners, and othirs sre being daily brought into Havana ‘from ail parts of the country. 1, myself, being accidentally a short distance frem homa, saw two well dreased, gentle- manly jooking individuals om their way to the city, on horseback, betwern two soldiers— the latter armed to the tlemen were merely tied with cords, but our Tie Be the Voice 3 will was issued wont to work te chased type, and went to from th jaded appesrance of the horres, and the travel etgined costume of the riders, they had evidently come from 4 considerable cistance Awong tbe prisoners brought from Puerto Principe, is a: Senorita Guoven.
