At the close of the stock market , yesterday, there was a slight depression in prices, but considerable activity among the fancies. It is probably the effect of a too sud- en rise in the early part of the week ; a reaction doubt- Jess caused by parties realizing profits, It cannot, how- ever. in the face of the existing abundance of money, and the prevailing disposition to purchase, continue for any length of time. We look for an active and buoyant week, Recent purchasers have not only the means to carry what they have, but to largely increase their supplies, and we see daily indications of a speculative fecling spreading ‘among outsiders. This is a favorable feature in the mar- ket, particularly at this season, and almost proof positive that we are about entering upon an active upward move- ment in prices. Nearly all the railroad stocks have ad- yanced considerably recently, but the margin is by no means exhausted. Long Island, Stonington, and Hudson River railroads have been the favorites, and still conti- nue so, Harlem is improving slowly, but steadily, and ‘We see no good rearon why it should not touch eighty percent within the next thirty days. Erie Railroad is pretty well sustained, in the face of a steady in- crease in the issue of new stock. It is estimated that about one million of new stock will be put on the market this year. But for this, higher prices would be realized. New Jersey Zine is firm. Within the past two or three days, an immense quantity of stock has been purchased, most of which, we understand, will be withdrawn from the street. Nicaragua Transit has been moving up and down, between thirty-five and thirty-six per cent. No great amount of stock has heen offered, and holders exhibit no disposition to sell. The line is now, for the first time, in order, and will soon run four steamers # month to each of the outlet ports. In the month of June, more than three thousand passen- gers passed over this route, Now that there are steam- ers enough on each side to prevent a moment's deten- tion, the travel will doubtless be much greater, Florence and Keyport is steadily moving upward. A few hundred shares are gold daily, at an average advance of about one quarter per cent, All the little mining stocks appear to be making good progress. Ulster and St. Lawrence, both lead mining companies, are firmly held, and holders have evidently great confidence in them. Ulster closed yes- terday at eight, and there were numerous offers of two for St. Lawrence. There is one good point, at all events, about these companies: they have small cepitals, which is more than can be said ot mining companies generally in this vicinity.— Canton Company, and land stocks generally, move so suddenly up or down, that outsiders are afraid to touch them, It is impossible to tell, from day to day, where they will be. Railroad bonds have lately been much ne- gleoted. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the amount of specie exported from this port during the week ending the 14th of August, inclusive; alse the total shipments this year:— Sroraents or Srecin rrom tire Pont or New Yor. Previous shipments this ycar..... : Total for 1852.... cee ee veee eee eee eee 6 PL6,755 O72 In August, last year, the amount of specie shipped was $2,653,444, This year the amount shipped in the first two weeks of August, was $1,150,504. At this rate the exportation fer the month this year will cor- respond very nearly with the same month last year, In July, 1861, the shipments of specte amounted to more than six millions of dollars—$0,004,170—and in Avgust there was a falling off of nearly four millions of dollars, The outward ‘movements of precious metals are, however, of very little importance. - They are too trifling, compared with the reesipts, to attract much at- tention, The amount of gold dust received within the past day or two, by the steamships Northern Light and TMinois, is greater than the exportation will be for the whole month. ‘This being the dullest month for shipments of mer- ehandise in the whole twelve, we may expect moderate exports of specie for the rest of the year, as tho great ste- ple products of the country commence going forward in Spanier. Cotton will, without doubt. be in active de. mand, at remunerating prices, the consumption having yeached 9 point which even our great crop does not ex- eeed, Breadetufis may not be in active demand during the appreaching season, The crops in Great Britain wore in the most fousjehing condition, ang the baryest . 15, 896, 887 likely to be coanioaveiny above an sea, This may | i reduce very materially shipments from this side; but we find even in tae face of this prospective large domes- tie supply in England, extensive weekly shipments from this port. ‘This looks as thcugh low prices on the other side had not the usual effect, and that shipments could be profitably made, even under the existing depression in the Englith markets, If such is the ease, we shall, under the most unfavorable circumstances, find an important out!et for our surplus supply of breadstutfs, Forta- nately, we are not likely to have a very great excess: notwithstanding the favorable season, Our domestic consumption is immense, and it is annually increasing at a greater ratio than production. Within the past three or four years the attention of agriculturists has been attracted by other matters. Of the agricultural popula- tion, lorge numbers have gone to California, many have become engaged in the railroad movements of the day, and the construction of railroads has driven a great aum- ber of laborers from the cultivation of the soil. This not only reduces the class of producers, but has a two-fold effect, by increasing the number of consumers. Immi- gration has been much less this year than last, which’ with the demand for workmen on the internal improve- ments of the country, bas doubtless largely added to the home demand for breadstuffs, provisions, &c., without providing for a corresponding increase in the supply. If the present apparent prosperity of the country continues for a great length of time, the class of producers will be still further reduced, and the class of consumers still farther increased, Any great increase in the supply of gold gives an impe- tus to branches of industry geuerally. but we believe the cultivation of the foil is an exception. Matters of a speculative character command more attention than the old, legitimate order of things, and people leave remune- rating, substantial, permanent employment, and rash headlong into the wildest schemes the mind of mau can conceive, This, for a time, has an unfavorable influence upen the most important interests, and deranges the op- erations of trade, by deranging the law of supply and do- mand, ‘The effect is asudden intlation of prices, various fluciuations from day to day, aud an artisicial, unuaturs state of things the result. Reactions are after a tin realized, by rushing first Into one thing and then sadden- ly into another, and the collapse generally carries away all those artificial structures erected in the miuds of spes- vlators and their victims, leaving nearly every other mao in the country a complete wreok, divested of all his fir rehemes, quietly to recover from his delusions, After a time, there is a gradual return to more legitimate employments; but it is by slow degrees that the great source of all wealth, all prosperity» becomes beulthy again, The recovery from a great com. mercial or fina:.ciat revulsion is generally brought abo by areturn to the great producing pursuit’ of all coun- tries. Unless that ising sound and healthy state, it is utter folly to expect any improvement in the other do- partments of industry. The body must be cured before the limbs gain strength and activity; and the most vital importance rhould at all times beattached to the agri- cultural interest. Cheap food is the pivot upon which the prosperity of any country ia the world rests. It is, therefore, bad policy to extend other pursuits toa degree, or with a rapidity, which requires any drain upon the strength of the producing classes, In this country, with our hin- menge extent of territery, with a soil of the greatest fer- tility, with the greatest facilities for the poorest man to obtain a tract of good land, the division of producers and consumers is much more equal than is generally supposed. With an extent of soil unlimited, at a price which puts it im the power of any man to get possesion of all he can cultivate, it is a fact thatthe proportion of producers to consumers is annually becoming less, The mauufacturing, mechan- ical, commercial, and other interests, aro, on the con- trary, increasing with the greatest rapidity. The ad- dition to the numbers engaged on our railroads, in our commercial marine, in the erection of buildings for all purposes, in fact, in any employment, under the spread- ing and strengthening prosperity of the country. except agriculture, is 60 great, that we need be under no appre- hension that we shall not find markets abroad for all the products of the soil we have to spare, or that prices at home will sink below remunerating points. It will be along time before we shall be very great consumers of ourown cotton. We have not made so much progress in the manfacturing of that important staple as in other things; but we are by no means far behind, considering the absence of skill and knowledge among those who first turned their attention to that business. In time, with perseverance and good mansgement, under the present policy of the government, the cotton manufacturing in- terest of the country will be second to none other. It is alrendy large enough to give » home demand for the raw material that excites a most favorable influence on prices, and when we get a little more independent of foreign markets for this great staple, we shall be better able to control the movements of the crops, and establish more remunerating prices for the planter. é ‘The annexed statement exhibits the§quantity and va- lue of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consump- tion, for warehousing, and the withdrawals from ware- house, for the second week in August, in each of the past two years :— Movements 1x Forricn Dry Goons. There has been a slight addition tothe stock of staple cotton goods. Heavy brown sheetings are in good demand, and searce, Bleached goods are moderately active—stock is accumulating, and prices are steady. Drills are not active, butare firm, with s light supply, at old prices, Osnaburgs are quiet, but firm, with on upward tendency; this description of goods more than other sympathizing immediately with the rise or fall of the raw material, when the stock, aa it now is, is short. Denims are firmat 9% a 8c., with a limited business. Stripes are in mode- rate request, at steady rates, and tisks are rather higher. Canton flannels are indemand, and firm. Printing cloths have slightly advanced, but with avery limited demand. The quotations are now 524 a53fc. Prints are actire, with a good and well assorted supply, attractive to buy- ers from all parts—South, Bast, West, and North. Ging- hams are brisk of sale at the steady uniform price of 103ge. Delaines are active, and next to prints, are the most so of any. Dunnell’s prints are favorites. Cloths are in great demand, at full prices; but the supply is be- low the demand, and sales to arrive have been freely made. Manufacturers are working to order—a pleasure they have rarely experienced till lately. In a month ortwo the supply will improve. In the meanwhile, the consumption of German and French cloths is greatly extending Sheep's greys are firm and moderately active, Satinetts are wanted at full regular rates, and the supply is not more than enough, Cassimeres are in good request, both in plain colors, black avd fancy styles ; prices are steady. Lindseys are slow of sale, at 16 a 17c, Tweeds are heavy of ralo, Jeans are quiet, but steady, Flannels are in good request, without change in prices, Blankets in fair de- mand and firm, Shawls are attracting the attention of the trade, who are providing themselves with an assort- ment for the opening demand of the fall season. The supply is large, varied, and attractive, at moderate prices, and will insure a large business, French goods are very active, and of all kinds, dress and staple goods, fine avd coarse, woollens and cottons, The fine delainos are in good demand, at full rates. Ribbons sell more briskly at asking prices, Silks—colored, figured and plain~are rather buoyant, from the increasing cost of importation, and the impossibility of the orders sent out being filled, except at an advance, Blacks have advanced. Vestings are searce and wanted, Fine cloths are more wanted, and are higher in price. Black casaimeres and docekins are active. British goods are also in demand, especially stuffe, There have been fair sales of delaines and linens, at regular prices.
