TO THR EDITOR OF THE HERALD. New Your, Briday. August 13, 1668, Today » most interesting race came Of, between | the Francis Skiddy and the Alids, beth creck boats om the North river. The time of the starting of each boat from New York is fixed at 7 o’clook A. M. The Skiddy being a little nearer Albany than the Alida. in consequence of being & fow piers above her, the Alida was fairly entitled to am- ticipate the time alittle, starting from her dock three minutes before 7 o'clock. by her owa clock, in the engine | room. and about five minutes by the watohes of several persons on board. We went along nory_quletiy, at the rate of about a mile in 2:59, the Alida having the start of her antagonist, which she kept for twenty-five or thirty miles It was however. be eg that the Skiddy was gaining on ber fast, so fest. that she passed her with appareat ease, and kept the lead, making a landing at West Point, which the Alida declined, The detention of the Skiddy at the Point enabled her antagonist to get somewhat in ad- vance. the next landing bing Newbu a The matter now became highly interesting, and would, I think have enirely satisfied ‘the most fastidious amateur of steam. boat racing. The struggle, between the Point and Now- burg was fine, The Alida was in advance. but the Skiddy kept gradually gaining on ber. and for want of a further distance to run, finally, very near Newburg dock, got alongside of the Alida, @ trifling collision only tuking place. by reason of both boats coming in contact. All this was yery well, but on a nearer approach to the dock or landing at Newburg, the Skiddy crowded the Alida, which was inside. so close, and both boats, having fome speed on them which it would not do to slack too suddenly, the Alida ran foul of the dock, carrying avey some fifteen or twenty feet of the guard timbers ai knocking ina part of her wheel guard. What other mange was done, I did not particulary examine. By ap ex- pert manceuvre. and directing the passengers to move to the opposite side of the Alida, her guards were per- vented trom getting under those of the Skiddy when the boats were alongside of each other. The Alida rolled her wheels out of the water, but. she being ® stwunch boat, there was not the least’danger of upsetting, although some of the ladies on board expre-red their apprehensions about this, inthe usual way that frightened women are very apttodo The Alida. however, reached the landing first. What added greatly to the interest of the affair was the loud cheers of some twofor three hundred per- sonson the dock at Newburg. probably the favorites of the Alida As the engine received no damage, she soon came off again with flying colors The whole affair was conducted in the most gen'lemauly manner, Nota word f remonstrance was ured by any person on board, to my knowledge. We reached Newburg at twelve minutes be fore ten o'clock. running sixty miles, with one stop. in say two hours and fifty miuutes. Having business at New- burg. I walked ashore ONE OF THE PASSE OF THE ALIDA ‘The Montreal Sufferers and Madame Athont, New Yonk, August 4, 1852. On entering the premises, the landlady said to him that Waiticre had sworn vengeance against him, and he had better keep out of his way. He did not stand back. but stili crowded on at Straus, and Straus discharged three of the barrels in quick succession, the slugs taking effect on ibe perron of Waltie: One cf the barrels was loaded with two slugs; these two passed through the right arm, coasing alvo a slight flesh wound on the side, The other two eburges were of irifingamount. One caused a flesh weundon the underneath part of his chin, the other « «ht wonnd on the left arm. So near was Waltiers to Straus tbat the powder from the pistol burnt his (‘Wal iiere’s) face.
