FIGHT BETWEEN THOMPSON AND WILLIS—THOMPSON VICTORIOUS--WILLIS INSENSIBLE (From the San Francisco Herald. June 22.) For some time past, the population of the Ssera- mento valley. and the ‘‘fancy” of all of the State, have been on the qui vive in reference to a ed fight that was ie deed upon between George ‘hompson, of England, whose name has, ere this, figured conspicuously in Bell's Life in London, and px journals, as a bruiser of some protensien, and Marshall Willis, an American by birth, and a na- tive, we believe, of the State of Maine The circam- stances which led tothe challenge and to its sccep- tance are not generally known. further than that NINTH AND LAST ROUND, Willis leads off. and succeeds in planting a Vow on ‘Thompron’s right check. Thompson then ci Willis, avd plants two heavy blows on Willis. which knock him down in-enaible, On time being celled, Willis was unable to make his appearance, and Thompson was declared the viotor, ‘Thus ended this brutal exhibition. Willis remained insenrible for seme minutes—the bete were adjusted and the crowd di+p-reed in various directions—some on horse- back, some im vehicles of different kinds. and someon foot.’ The fight lasted oxactly nincteen minutes. and it was @ matter of wonderment to all that Willis should have encourtered such a superior antagonist APPORTIONMENT OF REPRESENTATION —Undor the act of Congress just passed the whole number of representatives wil! be two hundred and thirty- four, distributed as ae, viz. :— New Jersey Pennsylvania .... Delaware .. each Leste d considered himself the ‘‘ better man,” and imagined he could whip the other. After negotiations had been en into in the usual manner, it was at length decided that the rival bruisers should meet and fight for one thousand dollars a side, in the neighborhood of Sacramente, on the 20th of June inst. The intelli, of the agreement to fight was soon noi and it was confidently expected that the struggle would attract to Sacramento, on the day om which it was to take Place, people from ail parte of the State, particularly as it was rumored that the victor, in the coming glee le, would be pi re with a belt, and would bold the title of Champion of California. Indeed, this fight, in the opinion of all ‘*fancy” and “fast”? men, was looked upon as a most important event—one which would form the commencement of @ now opoch in the history of California. As might have been expected, there- fore, Sacramento City had a large addition to her population, yesterday and for two or three days preceding the day appointed for the fight to 0 place. As might have been expected, too, there wae a great demand for buggies, wagons, and vehi- cles ot every kind, the “‘ ring’ having been selected at a point distant some six milesfrom the city. In- deed, so great was the demand for vehioles, that many of the San Franciscans who embarked in the Sophie on Saturday night, for the purpose of wit- nessing the fight, could not procure one for love er money, and after arriving in Sacrameate, were obliged to forego witnessing the conflict In some instances, as much as $50 were offered for a wagon and horse, but to no purpose, everything with a pair of wheels baving been en; beforehand a very remunerative price to the livery stable keep- ers, who determined to make as much profit from the exhibition av possible THE FIGHT. Three o'clock in the afternoon was the time appointed for the fight to take place At that hour precisely, the note of ition was sounded from a bugle, and the twenty five hundred or three thousaud persons present, male apn female. pricked up their ears and eagerly awaited the appearance of the eombatants. The echo of the bugle had scarce died away, when crash went a por: tion of the benches which were placed in ee form around a portion of the ring, and some fifty or a hundred advocates of the “manly art of sclf defence” made a descene to the ground of some six or eight feot. | No legs or arme having been broken. order was soon re- established, and the multitude awaited with intense | anxiety the appearance of tne gentlemen who had by | Sgreement “signed, sealed and delivered,”’ d to | pound each other till ope was exbausted. At length the | Fogle ‘was sounded fur the third tue, and ‘inmte- | dintely atterwards Marshall Willis, one of the com- | batants. accompanied by his seconds. Alick Devoe | and David Roberts. entered the ring. amid the applause | of those prevent. In four or five miautes afterwards | Thompeon followed. accompanied by his seconds, Mr, MeLeester. otherwise known as Country McClusky, and Professor Campbell. Betore entering the ring son. threw his hat into it, as a gage of buttle. ‘The parties combatant were taken in charge by their seconds. Their | fighting shoes were put on and they wero assisted to un- dress, Each was naked from the waist up, and each | one’s hair was closely cut. As soon as the parties di- vested themselves of their upper garmomts, they were cheered by their respective friends, but it was remarked that in point of “condition.” weight und height, Thomp- | son hada decided advantage. Willis, it was thought, ‘was too fleehy to undergo, with apy prospect of success, the revere ordeal to which he was about to subject himself. ‘This was the general impression. and if the truth were known it was icipated in by Willis himself when he saw the herculean proportions of Thompson. his full de- yelopement of muscle and the absence ot all unnecessary | fat or flech, Theiflage ofthe combatants were then tied to the stake, That of Willis’ waa a plain, unassuming blue spotted silk kerchief, and Thompron’s was @ satin searf guadily ornamented | While these preliminary proceedings wero going on. par- ties were going hither and thither, jingling money in their hands, and offering to make bets. “A hundred to fifty on Thompson.” cried one * Five hundred to two hun- | dred and fifty,” «eid another. “ Pshaw ! it’s no mateh ” eaid another ; and thus bets were offered in favor of Thompson, and sgainst Willis—few of them, howevor, being taken. At this point, a circumetance oceurred which was not mentioned in the «mall bills. nor expected by the erowd. Agentieman forced bis way to the ropes, and taking a book from under bis arm, enid in a loud voice : * Gentlemen, I will read to you the seetion of the statute ofthe State of California, prohibiting prize fighta— The people of the State——’ (Here the deputy Sheriff, for such the gentleman wes, was interrupted by o terrible “noise and confusion,” which were made for the pesos of drowning his voice, so that it could not be heard by the pugilists, | He continued. however. to read—" The people of the | State of California (Hurrah! The principals and their res- pective seconds siprncne’ each other from diagonal points, and met in the centre, where they shook hands; | ahalf eagle was thrown up. Willis wins the choice of po- | sition; the seconds retire, and the parties are ready to t. ‘One hundred to twenty-five were here offered on Thompson, but there were notakers, Five hundred to three hundred were next offered, but there were no takers, At length Thompson, with perfect self: possession, walked about the ring, and jingling money in bia band, offered to bet any one two hun doUars that he would win the fight. No one seemed di to accept this lisposed liberal offer, but agreat many exhibited their willingnoss to bet the other way. by exclaiming. ‘Two hundred that ‘Thompson draws the fitst blood; “Two hundred to one hundred that Thompson wins the fight.”” “Will no one bet?” “What's the matter?’’ At length Wi to Thompron and socepts his Chi epee \ ye erUiimnal ve @l lons hs knowing one oee mi tong be Jedgnd poy atl short colloquy which tool piace :— (2vo hundred dotiars on the firet blood.’’ ) Which wall ™ | “TM Take Them na? | “You'll win it, then.” (Laughter. |, Atlength the money for that were agreed | eal which, howe owed tot mm ores the Odds) having been every- | thing being read, fight oan .
