At five o'clock. ths progress of the five was checked in the lower part of the city, in » building called the Barnum House. Daylight soon told us the damage of the night. Before us lay the city of Sonora. a mass of charcoal and mouldering ruins, while around us the hills were tenanted by the houseless and homelo«s—here gathering a tattered remnant of clothing, and there a group despondent and weeping over the wreck of their carthly all. The city, from the Philadelphia Kestauraut to the Barnum Mouse. a distance of full three-fourths of a mile, has been almost entirely swept away. On Main or Wash- ington streets not a single building remains, Capt. Alonzo Green is the heaviest loser by this fire. So far, he has ascertained a loss of $40,000, Theall, Perkins & Co. $35.600, and Linoberg $30.000. But the most, heart-rending calamity is the death of Francois Mollitre, He perished in the flames, and this morning his bones were gathered from the ruins and de- cently interred It is supposed by many that thia unfor- tunate young man caused the fire, by reading in bod with a candle, ‘and fallin gto sleep, the tlame was communi- cated to the bed clothing. The Watering Pt OUK CAPE MAY CORKESPONDENCE. Care May, July 17, 1852. The Hotels—The Quakers, §c. This delightful and fashionable résort is now im the full eourse of the season, and probably has & visiting population of six or seven thousand. The Cape May steamers leave Philadelphia every morn ing at hali-past eight; and during the warm woather of the past few days, they have gone freighted with the health seeking and pleasure-seeking citizens of the now sultry city of Penn, to which, indeed, the Cape seems attached as a distant and luxurious suburb. Nothing ot the kind can be imagined more agree- able than the excursion, if only the day is brilliant and quiet; 80 let us step upon the staunch opposi- ion steamer Thomas Powell, on a day of thie des: cription, and make the trip. There is an air of re- luxation and gaiety about the whole party; an un- ueually large crowd stand upon the wharf, with @ seemingly pleaved expression that so many of their friends are bound away trom care, and the stoam- boats darting up the river, gaily salute the pleasure seckers with their bells—their passengers lean over the bulwarks to greet us. Our passengers appear to be mainly from the Quaker city. Here are fan lies and ei of friends enjoying their conversa tion—trim damsels are pacing the deck in couples —cbildren and their nurses are eating candy and running sbout—old people are looking serenely sround, or having their quiet talk—and the soli- tary traveller, he myself, is drinking in the mellow happiness that appears betore him. Mowa- while, we are running along the Bright waters of the noble Delaware, and pass the Roger Williams, of the regular line. The shores separate on vither hand, until the river opens into the broad and glit- tering bay, and we love sight of land We pase rapidly thiough fleets of vessels, and a little before three come tu the dock ut the Cape. There were two wharves, but one of them was partly car- ried away a few days since by tho boat. It sunk but slowly, and the few people whe were on it escaped by running. H. they heen more humerous, we might have had a repetition ef the Staten Isand accident. The road which con- ducts fiom the ljanding to Cape Island—an island which is made such by » chanuel of not more than six feet wide—i+ a new one, thrown up, I believe, since last season, and hes three toll gates within a mile and a half. Of the sinuosities of the old road, you will have an idea when you learn that the new road, | which is straight, crosses it some half dozen times. Nearly all the hotels are well filled. Our boat brought down three hundred and ts passengers to he added to the number of guests; but on their © pretty well loaded, carry- ing one or two hundred buck to business and home. The city of © May comprises little indeed be- ides hotel. 1 the buildings accompanying them, such as ten pin alleys, billiard saloons, Se. Th are huge structures, put up onl during the thort season of two months, avid, indeed, have suck a transient appearance that one is surprised that their roofs are not taken off by the gales in wineer, Short as the season is, they appear prosperous, anc @ new one is in process of orection, and I believe is Low open in part, which, for size, situation, and splendor will perheps surpass either of the others. The Ocean House is mostly appropriated by the Quakers. Ono is surprised fo see how they pre- dominate at this celebrated resort. Nota few are seen in the broad drab coat, or the peculiar bonnet which characterizes the seot. And among they er peop ven among the gayest—you bay dialect.
