He was seen to retire to rest, and immediately after the explosion oc- curred, the place where he had been lying was observed to have been shattered to pieces, and he was nowhere to be secn, It is presumed that he perished instantly, although a faint hope, which will cling to one when the destruction or safety of friends are concerned, was entertained that by come miracle he might have reached the shore, which was bot far distant. J, M, Wolf and bis on, a lad about fourteen yeara of age, were keen standing on the wreck of the St. James together, The boy urged his father to jamp in the water, and declared that he could save him. He arrived there, however, after all who could be were saved. We Jearn that Capt W. H. Wright, the owner of the St. James. is badly scalded. = ‘The St. James was a high pressure boat, was built in neinnati, in 1850, and has been employed. on the river until about a month ago, when she was placed in the lake trade.
