Our tele- graphic report characterizes the whole affair as being well calowluted to do mischief to one or both of the eid parties. Upwards of five thousand persons are seid to have been in attendance, all of whom worked th a ubanimity that was truly astonishing. In- stead of wasting a great deal of time in endeavoring to erganize, as did both the whigs and democrats at Baltimore, the feesoilers selected all their officers, appointed their cormmittees, and commenced opera- tions in one day. This is business like—it shows that they know their strength, and intend to meke the most of it. Which of the old parties will suffer from the effects of this formidable third party, it is impoegible at this time to tell. The pro- eecdings of the latter will be watched with intense interest by everybody A very curious kindof a pie-nie was held near Beuth Abington, Mass, last Monday. It ap- peers that a large number of the young people from the adjacent towns had assembled in a veautiul grove with the intention of celebrating the national ersary, by feasting, dancing, singing, and love-making, when, all of a sudden— Jo! and bebold—down came several car loads of biack and white abolitionists, who landed, and, aficr paying their compliments to the village lads wend lasees, organized a meeting, by appointing a negro to the office of chairman. Edward Quincy, Wendell Ph ‘Theo ore Parker, Abbey Kelly, and others, then went to work with the evident in- temiion of demolishing the constitution, upsetting the Union, and mazsacring Daniel Webster, Kos+ guth, and al) the rest of mankind, excopt Seward a and his coedjutors. How well they succeeded we leave the reader tu jadge. Read the report. It is rich Mr. Rantoul, votwithstanding his acknowledged freesoil predilections, has at iength come out in fat- vor of Pierce and King. He addressed a large meeting of the democracy of Salem, Mass., last Monday. On the same day, B. F. Butler, and ether distinguished democrats, spoke at the ratifi- cation mee Quincy, which is said to have been well attended. What remains of tbe dilapidated native Ame-, assembled in wational convention rican party at Trenton, on Monday. After striking the word “native” from the title of the party, the old platfusun of 1845 was re-adopted. So it is the same old spavined back, after all, notwithstand- ing that it hes been trimmed and brushed up a little for the occagion. A very animated debate sprvog up on the question of nominating Mr. Web- ster for President, and George C. Washington for Vice Provident. The speakers becaine quite ex_ cited: avd it was not until many of the members had withdrawo that the nominations were made. The indications are, that what is left of the faction will go over to the Southern Unionists. Many very i terceting items may be gleaned from our Washington despatches this morning: Attor- ney General Crittoden, it is asserted, is going out to England, to take the plase of Minister Lawrence, who bas resigned, and is coming home. The post of Booretary of the Navy, which appears to have been going » begging for several days, it is now re- ported has been cifered to ex-Senator Chambers, of Marylaod. The announcement in‘one of the Wash- ington papers, that M. Sartiges, the Freach Minis. ‘ter, had been recalled, is pronouneed untrue. On ‘the contrary, the conduct of Mr. 8. is reported to be highly satisfactory to his own, as well as this, moveroment. Amovg the numerous conventions, meetings, &c., wiven under the telographic head, the reader should awt overlook the whig ratification assemblages in Concord, N. H, aud Nashville, Tenn; alvo the Spi- ritwelirt Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The whigs of thw two fomner places were out in fall force, and made the air resoend with their shouts; but at Cleveland, few of the “ Spirita” were about, and thove who did make themselves manifest were very tame. Upwards of fifty persons aro supposed to have lost their lives. We publish elsewhere the particulars, as far as they could be collected upto the hour of going to press, of a sad and fatal accident at Staten Island, attended with serious loss of life. The bridge from which the victims were precipitated is about twelve feet wide and some eighteen long, on to which up- wards of a hundred persons were crowded. This bridge was supported by two chains only. A link of one of these having broken, the whole were precipi- tated en masse into the small dock below. There | was no float underneath the bridge, such as there | are at all the Brooklyn ferries, and which would keep it in a safe position, even though it were overladen, and the chains broken or let go. The Coroner’s ju- | ry have not made any investigation into this part of the sad affair. It appears to be one that the Grand Jury ought not to overlook. We have not been called upon to record such a distressing acciden since the fatal one at Greenwich avenuejschool. The Boards of Aldermen and Assistants were not organized yesterday, for want of a quorum. Tue TAMMANY Society CeLepration—Ex-Pnrest- peNT VAN BUREN AND OTHER DEMOCRATS IN THE Frep.-We refer our readers particularly to the report of the celebration of the Fourth of July in Tammany Hall, under the auspices of the Tammany Society. A number of distinguished leaders of the democra- cy, from every part of the Union, appear to have been present at that assemblage, and to have msde speeches on the occasion, although no reports have been made of their remarks, on the present crisis of their affairs, Among others, we observed the names of Governor Cobb, of Georgia, and John Van Buren of this city, set down for speeches. We have no doubt that both these gentlemen managed to keep the table in a roar, with the brilliancy, hopes, and pathos, with which they described the condition of the democracy at the present crisis. Convention of feta Med tained in the remarkable correspondence with many of the leading democrats, from ex-President Van Buren down to ex-Governor Kossuth, who appears to have been brought forth for the occasion. Mr. Van Buren’s letter is conceived in that peculiar democratic rigmarole, and in those harmonious pe- riods which mark his life from the first time that he became Senator of New York till his last nomina- tion—a colored nomination—for President a second time, in 1849. Mr. Van Buren also seems to forget, in the honeyed phrases of his letter, that he bolted from the democracy in 1848; although he seems to have embraced with gladness the opportunity of now coming back to the party, and of going in strong for Pierce and King, in conjunction with all the other barnburners of this State. Mr Van Bu- ren is a wise one—he has shown good sense in coming back to Tammany Hall, not to insult the convention who placed Pierce and King before the country, in the same way in which the Evening Post alluded to their platform, or as John Cochrane of the “up town” wards did on the anti-slavery question at large. The other most remarkable note on the occasion, is the letter from Kossuth, ia which he reminds the democracy of the strong intervention resolutions passed by them at Tammany Hall in Octeber last, and now almost repudiated by the convention at Baltimore, where they placed a new platform before the country. This is rather an unkind cut of the great Magyar, for the ninety thousand dollars he has received by humbugging the people of this country, in relation to republicanism and democra- cy. But what else could be expected of the ‘ poor penniless” agitator, when he had filled his pockets, Old Tammany is again in glory!
