He said the only question was whother the North would do its part ia the coming eamprign—that there was no doubt about the Seuth going for Pierce and King The speakere, in the course of their remarks, made fre- quent allusions to the compromise measures, and those remarks which were inost +trongly in favor of those mea- sures, were most warmly applauded by the meeting. ‘This may be taken ss an indication that the masses of the democracy are for (he Compromise measures, That party is up to the mark. and indeed the two great ties ‘ure standing on national ground—anti-agitation, anta Seward and Greeley ground. von if the whig par- ty should triumph, the slavery itators cannot get into Power, unless they enter at some back door. Tho Rev, ©. 8 Heary, D. D., delivered the oration, and Mr. J." But. nevertiaaless, let colleges be retained and multiplied, which “feed porsons for the univera- ties, ‘The coilege couid not make profound mem of learning. It was mot its function. It was not the funetion of the university to form the young man, but took him aiready prepared to think and to study, wnd carried him forward to the groatest possible perfection of know in science and learaing. Thg college was intended to form those, also, who did not go tothe universities, and wo needed a greater number of educated young men in our community, ‘Tiere institutions did not stand in comparison. Voth of th heat value to the commonwe: the colleges Le places for giving a really liberal e He hela the classical, mathematical, logical, and rhetorical studies, well proportioned, im the highe-s view. The list of college studies were crammed like those of schools for young Iadics, where every modern Language And scoomplishment could bo learned in three years, (Laughter) Multitudes entered the colleges without sufficient preparation. and consequently derived but little benefit ; some derived cnough te enable them to stud: hereafter, and many left with gp diploma upon whi they could not pear an examinfion. This came from attempting too much, and doing nothing thoroughly. Tho remedy lay in returning to the original de- sign of the oollege, and not crowding it with learning that was ted to the university. He had no objection to modern languages and the Sciences being connected. $ provided such courses in tho mature of them as were either literary or foientific, und are crowded into the space of four yoars, Most vocations proceeded upon acientitio principles, and which demanded « knowledge of those principles. ‘Teo- tures on soap making, and everything useful, should be admitted into our colleges. But he insisted they should not be crowded into the under graduste course, In the matter of degrees, our colleges conforred the title of mus- ter and doctor, but they could not ferm the thing. It was celf made, after the college had beem gone through, and which titles it did not really confor. Let them think of the titie of doctor of laws lighting upon the head of an cmineot politician, who knew nothing of either the olvil or canon law, and whose title of L.L.D. was a cabslistio appen to many, and who was not made a clor; an, because it was ho thought be was not fit for it, (Haugh ter.) Let these titles be confurred only whore they had been fairiy-earned, in the various braaches of learning; they should be conferred only after a rigid examination, ‘There may be cxceptions in the cases of Dr. Johnston and Klihu Burritt, whose titles were but inadequate to their i . Wecould not have s university without & theological faculty. Inthis he was compelled to diffor fiom his predecessor and successor in the chair, which his (tho orator’s) ill health compelled him to ‘resign, Tis Sind roposed to out out a most necessary part of university insteuotion. ‘The State was the proper power to provide a proper system of public instruction and ‘was, morcover, the only power that was capable 0! properly doing this public work. These institutions should be free, like those in Europe. bi eg 8p Propriations of money were necessary to carry oul Unis object, A university in this city would juire med Profeaeors; the University of Berlin had one hus- dred professors. The expense of this. and of libraries, Spearates, &o., would be at least three millions. That three millions might be saved in afew years, by cutting off the un: expenditure of this town. He con- cluded his acai life by invoking them to the attain- mont of this object. Great obstacles lay in false and in- different views as to its utility, and a spirit of penurious- ness and envy. The orator humorously sketched spocl- mens of various classes of society, who deprecate educa- tion hy their general indifference ewpecistiy. Quintus Squeciey, the editor of the Daily Trumpet, who began work with his fellow printer apprentices, and although » thinker avd « writer, was nota man of education. Thea came Tongue¢nd, the democratic orator, who believed in nothing but the gullibility of the people. (Laugater.) Add to these obstacles the edium theologicum. They would thus cee what difficulty wax presented, but which could be overcome by perseverance in the promulgation of truth. He had hoped to be with them in the labor of Vuilding up the college and university of this city, but hin shattand bealth deprived him of that pleasure. The uded by ciuquently commending the work to ‘heir exertions, and retired, amid long and en@usiastic applunse Mr. J. Y. Huwrinanon, (author of “Lady Alide,”) deli- vered the poom, which exhibited much real beauty and sentime nt, and was weil appreciated and applauded. The anniversary then terminated.
