Times i that a house occupied by Richard Gibbs and Mr, Manus, im that town. was destroyed by fire, at abont oneo'clock on Wednesday morning Inst; and two boysof Mr. Gibbe— | aged five and seven years—together with their grand- mother, a lady named Hurley, lost their lives in the Hames. Other persons in the house barely saved their | lives by jumping from the windows. ‘The house wa not | insured. Ali the furniture was destroyed. Fata Rencontre.—Mr. Edward Stevenson, son of Mr. Evan Stevenson, was killed at Gicorgetown on the 12th instant, by Captain Carrick. It appears that Stevenson had made some publication in the Herald in reiation to Carrick’s attentions to a young jady, at which Mr. C. took offence. This wd to some hostile messages between them. and on Wednesday they met in Gvorge- town. Both drew pistol at nearly the same time. Ste- venson fired first. and his ball passed through Carrick’s hat. C. fired immediately afterwards, shooting Stevenson through the heart. He fell dead instantly, Ie was a young mfarried man, and leaves a wife and ohild, Both of the parties were much esteemed by thoge who knew them —Frankfort, Ky. Cominonwealth, Ace went 1x Sovtu Troy.—Yesterday forenoon, while some workmen were employed in digging sand bank, a few rods southeast of the Poestenkild stream, the bank caved in and buried one of them; and while those who escaped were at work to rescue their com- rade, the bank again caved, burying two more ef them. The three were ail shortly after rescued from their peri- ious situation, One of them had one of his eptke in two places, another was badly hurt in the side, and the third bad his ribs injured materially, besides sustaining some other injuries. Dre. Thorn, Freiot, and Reardon were sent for, when it was found necessary to amputate the leg of one of the sufferers. Dr. Thorn performed the operation, and it was amputated above the knee. Fis in tue New Jansey Mountatns.—We learn from the Sussex Register. that a tire broke out on Friday of last week.on the Blue Mountains, about two miles west of the Milford turnpike road. and raged for several days. crossing the turnpike near the toligate, and paas- ing in a north easterly @irection towards the New York line. We have not learned where it was arrested, but preeume that it did not live through the rain of Wed- nesday. The fire had not reged on this part of the Blue Mountains for several years previous, and had therefore much combustible matterto feed upon, creatinga heat that dectroyed larce quantities of timber and fencing, ‘eausing considerable loas to the owners of timber lauds— and to those whore improved lands lay on the side of the mountain. Abraham Bell is said to have lost a string of fence a mite long. and Judge Bell is estimated to have been damaged $1.000. in the destruction of timber; no insurance. In Pike county. Pennsylvania, the fire has also been raging during the past weck. in the mountain Gistrict, doing much damage to the fences and timber. Mesete, Morris & Co. of New York, will commence on Monaay next, with two dredging machines, and will place another at work soou afterwards, Messrs. Osgood & Co. of Troy, will also commence on Monday, with one dredger, and will set another at work ina few weeks, ‘The Engineer bas completed a chart of five miles of the tiver, which shows the situation of all tho bars very ac- curaicy. This chart will be valuable to our pilots, as it shows some material changes which have taken place ine the chonnei of the river at this place. The Engineer has ascertained that it willrequire the excavation of 60,000 cubic yards to open a channel through the bar at Castle- ton, 000 feet in width. and to give cight feet depth of wa- ter. Another bar exists near the “Nine Mile Tree,” about two miles below Castleton, which will require the ation of about 20.000 cubie yards. The contracts e been made for twelve cents per cubie yard, which is believed to be lower than such work has been done for heretofore. THE PERRINE PAVEMENT. ‘The report of the Committee on Streets of the Board of Assistant Aldermen—non-concurring with the report of the Committee on Streets of this Board, pasacd April last, to apnul the contract for the laying down of Perrine’s combination pavement—was called up, when, Ald Stunrevant rose, and said he was ontirely op- pored tothe Perrine pavement, He considered it per- feetly wortblees, and jioped the contract would bo ? = nulled, The contract stipulated that if he did not fulfil the provisions of the same, he would pay $20 for day that should clapse from tho Ist of December until the pavement should be finished—the lst of December being the time fixed for the completion of the same. Now, the contractor nover commenced the work until a recolution paseed this board prohibiting him from taking up the coble stones, Ald. Drxman advocated the report, and contended that. the Perrine pavement Was not as bad as the Russ pave- there were a thousand on the lattcr. He was in favor of permitting the laying down of the pavement, and of siving Perrine a chance to teat it, Alderman Sari was opposed to the pavement, id hoped the work would be stopped. If they were going to lay this pavement, the streets, he said, we blocked up for months, and whea completed would be good for nothing.
