COMMERCIAL AFFAIRS, Annes MONEY MARKET. Tvrspay, May 18—6 P. M. There ie nothing new in the stock market to-day. The Birect was very inactive this morning, and holders of daney stocks were anxious to reduce their lines, without wrowding toomuch upon the market. At the first board, Canton Co. advanced % per cent; Hudson River Rail- road, ; Madison and Indianapolis Railroad, 1. Harlem Geclined & per cent; Erie Railroad, \%. The transac- fions were limited, and a very dull feeling prevailed. Whore appears to be no disposition, on the part of out- Riders, to take hold of stocks at present prices, It is prgued that most ofthe fancies do not range so high as ahey did twelve or eighteen months since, and that there has been no speculation this seasoa—notwithstanding dhe abundance and cheapness of money—anything like what has been experienced in previous years. This un- @oubtedly is correct; but it by no means follows that former prices will be again realised. There are wany strong reasons Why quotations for stocks generally ould not go a fraction above those now current. Sapital i# worth, in active business, five per cent per an- pum; and there are very few stocks that will yield one ywarter of that amount, There is, therefore, very little Inducement to invest in the uncertain, unguaranteed, seourities of the day; and men of means are employing their funds more in commercial pursuits, and in bona fide property investmenss, than in epeculation. There are fome stocks on the list which are actually worth much more than the market prices. These will steadily work their way upward, while those so much inflated and de- pending entirely upon speculation for the maintenance of that inflation, will ultimately recede to a proper level. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $105,182 27; payments, $15 200 91—baiance, $3,766.042 86, There was an active demand for foreign exchange, and Brawers were firm at our quotations, Bills on London We quote at 10 a 104 promium; on Paris, 5f,164 a BC 15; Amsterdam. 403; a 403;; Bremen, 78 a 78%; Homburg, 86% 4 3643, Several small engagements have Jxon made for shipping specie by the Europa to-morrow »-Wednesday, The steamer will probably take out about ne hundred thousand dollars, At a recent meeting of the stockholders of the Day- ton branch of the State Benk of Ohio, it was resolved to collect and return to the stockholders, as soon as possible, Without pressing the debtors of the bank, fifty per cent Of its capital From the annual report of the officers of the Georgia Tailroad Company, submitted to the annual meeting of the company, held at Augusta, Ga., on the 11th instant, We learn that the gross earnings of the road for the year vending on the Sst of March, amounted to $795,811 18, find the net profits to $440.303 64; leaving, after the pay- ment of a seven per cent dividend, a fund applicable to other purposes, of $151.087 93. The directors say in their report that the outiit of the road is now complete, for the first time since it has been in operation ‘The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company have received such assistance from the cities of Georgetown and Alex- andria, and from the banks of the district, as to be ina con- dition to commence (and, it is believed. to carry through) the repairs to the canal rendered necessary by the ravages of the Iate freshet. Georgetown has advanced $30,000, Alexandria $25,000. and the balance has been made up by the banks. The Chief Engineer feels assured that the ‘mount of $80,000, nor the the time mentioned for the Completion of the repairs, (viz: the Ist of July.) will be exceeded. He thinks the damage done is not really so bad as that of 1847 and that when repaired the canal will be worth $40.000 more than it was before the flood. Active operations are commenced all along the line. On the great break at Bear Island, about two miles east Of the Big Falls of the Potomac. the contractor for the repair js at work with a large force. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quotations in this market for the principal public securities, at the respec- tive periods named :— Quorations FoR Punite Secu: April 9, 18 B.S. The tendency of prices has been upward; and as new investments are made, the market value has been enhanced. The re. uced rates of interest ruling favor many such stocks as ‘are named in the above table. Stocks of a more specula- five character have lately been more neglected, and prices Gave not been so well sustained. The abundance of mo. ney. the ease with which stocks can be hypothecated Abe facilities for speculation which most any one can rowmand, do not appear to bave that influence upon Dperators which has marked the movements of former years, Capitalists are turning their attention more to eal estate and investments in resl property, than to Stocks, and it is our opinion that paper securities will, for B time at least, be much negleeted. Property of all kinds goust advance in value much more rapidly than paper xepresentatives of property; and as the yolume of the purrency, cither paper or metallic, increases, every des. rription of property, fixed or moveable, must increase gt least inthe same proportion, and at times in amuch Ereater proportion. We do not look for a much greater Inflation in quotations for certain kinds of stock securi- tics, even under the mort favorable cireumstances. Those payings fixed rate of interest must steadily depreciate in Falue, as the yalue of money depresiates, for their pro. Quctiveness becomes less as the necessaries of life appre- Ciate in p *. The same amount of income does not go Fo far. and it requires larger investments to give the same pi per annum, As house rents. provisions, and uch thing, advance in market value, thore living on Incomes find their resources contracted, and have either to dd to the investment, or reduce their expenditur It is, therefore, a fixed fact that securities giving a fixed rate of interest murt fall off in market value n# the unt ralue of money decreases The annexed statement exhibits the quantity and | value of certain articles exported from this port during ibe week ending Saturday night the 15th of May, dis- | Linguishing the destination aud exteut of shipments to each piace — Counence or THe Pont or New Your—Werxry LIVERPOOL Cotton, bales 4.128$166 410 Books, 4 @710 42858 Beef. tierce bble 6.054 Cedar, logs i Dusk 10.908 Maple. pieces. 7 25.976 Oars 876 800 4.100 Hep steel. 26 (BT4 iulis 9476 12.120 Iron pl'te.bxs WO 1.000 0000 407 } HAYRE.
