In relation to the Boston stock market, the Post of that city says:— As regards the prices of the dividend-paying railroads of the second class, there reems to be no properly regulated scale. The Boston and Providence, for instance. which earned 645 per ceut, and paid six per cent last year, sells readily at 87, This is cheap enough; but the Northern, which paid five per cent last year, brings but 62 to 63; the Pasrumpsic, which earned nearly six per cent in 1851, sells for but 58; and the Boston, Concord, and Montreal. which is earning more than five per cent on the road in operation, and which actually pays a stock dividend of six per cent, cells for but 42. Of course, there may be cir- cumstances which make these different prices all right; but the facts are certainly worth an investigation. The winter receipts of the Passumpsic, for instance. are said. to run a little below those of last year; but the manage- ment of the road attribute the decrease to the severity of the searon alone. The Boston, Concord. and Montreal is yet unfinished, and will probably owe some debt; but its receipts are rapidly increasing, and the road has ever been managed with ehrewdness, economy, and iutegrity. ‘The Worcester and Nashua, also. which paid nine per cent last year on $50. can be had at about 55, This road earned. in 1851, about $10,000 more than in 1850; and | the receipts thus far in 1852 are considerably abead 0 —Sandford's opera troupe evening. in the burlesque opera wear dis Shoe Sandford, Kava- | x performances and Collius, Th aLt.—Prof. Whitney will eive his th the People” to-niorrow night Mr. Weilden, itismissed —In the mat- Heged to have Charles 8. Our advices are to the 22d of December, and the statements published are calculated to inflame the public mind in Great Britain, and give a great impetus to the movements of speculators, Both in New South Wales and Victoria the general success of the minors seems to have been un- interrupted; but it isin the latter colony that the most striking results have been realized, Iu the week ending the 12th of December, the amount of gold brought to Meibourne under etcort, was 23,000 ounces, and, coupled with what was also brought by private hands, the total ‘value was supposed to have been equivalent to little short ot £100,000, New deposigs of great richness had been dis- covered, and it was found almost impossible to retain any one at an ordinary occupation. Instances of disappoint- ment, it is alleged, were hardly known. The daily influx of new comers. however, promised to put the permanent nature of the yield to a streng test. From Sydney the dates are to the 19th December, being six days later than the previous advices, ‘There was continued activity at all the old points of operation, and at the same time the experience of each day seemed to show imore conclusively the large extent of the localities yet to be occupied. Among some new regulations issued by the government was « clause specifying the terms upon which, aa regards liceuse fees, steam might be employed in working a claim, An engine of one horse power Jas to rank as equal to the labor of seven men, The most remarkable piece of gold discovered has been a “nugget" of 28 Ibs. 5 oz., which had been purchased for £1,155. The amount brought by the Alert is £128,000, and large sums would fellow by each succeeding opportunity, Labor, however, was becoming very dear, as the average yield at tho mines was £3 per man per week, and persons could obtain £2 per week, and ations. by taking hire there, ‘The accounts vary materially as to the quantity of gold mined and shipped from New South Wales up to the latest dates, ‘The annexed statement of gold mined appears } to haye been made up with great care and caution, and s therefore entitled to confidence. It is founded upon actual receipts and estimates. The calculations are made upon the value of three pounds per ounce :— In the banks in Melbourne and Geelong, on the hb November, 42.000 ounces...... £126,000 | In private hands in Melbourne and Geelong. at the same date, 8,000 ounces 24.000 | h Nov., 30414 36,318 50.007, + 17th December. 19,042 oun int estimated to have been brought in by private conveFance, 28.353 onnees : | Amount estimated in the hands of diggers on gold field, $0,000 ounces the Total, 243.414 ources—20.282 10-12 !bs.—202 ewt. 82 Ibs. 10 o.—10 tons 2 ewt. 82 Ibs. 10 o2..... £730,242 ‘Theee results have all been realized in less than three months. On the 20th of September, 1851, the announce- ment of the first large yield in Victoria was made, It is estimated that there were, at the latest dates, full twenty thousand people in all the diggings. The indications of gold extend over scores of miles, and the extent of the mines is, »! present, therefore, unknown. It is entirely | speculative as to what quantity of gold will be shipped from New South Wales during the ensuing twelve months; but it is considered that two millions sterling will not be over the mark, ‘The most important announcoment by the latest ar- rival from New South Wales, is the fact that gold had been discovered in New Zealand, in the settlement of Otago. The authority upon which this importaut piece of news is founded, is the Commissioner of Crown Lands at Dunedin, who has received specimens foundin seve- ral localities, and affording indubitable proof of the exis- tence of the precious metal in the southern island. Most {the specimens were taken from the estate of a gentie- man at Goodwood, and a quantity of gold dust had been received from the same quarter. A gentleman connected with the Otago Agricultural Assocition had duly tested the quartz specimens, and reported that they took the tests. which consisted of nitro-muriatic ucid and quick- silver. $6000 U States ‘2000 U State: Stock Exchange. 107., Wssq 200 shs_ 106 100 0. 100 dow... 6... Trade is active with jobbers and distributing houses, but not with wholesale houses, who do not break pack- ages. From the West and North there is a continual flow of custom, for which jobbers are fully supplied, and themselves only buy 5 ingly to keep up assortments. The export demand is Aull good for domestic cottons. Brown ahvetings and shirtings are in large stook, and prices favor buyers. Bleached goods are Reavy but the demand is not active. Drillsand denins are the most active goods, and the firmest in price, On the latter we observe an im- provement. Osnaburgs are in overstock, Stripes and ticks are dull. Printing cloths are steady, with a light but improving demand, though still limited. Prints are lower und dull, with a large stock. Ginghams are uniform. in price, with a steady demand. Delaines are not active, ant prices are in favor of buyers; the traile has been over- done, the supply both from abroad and at home having been greater than the demand. Cloths have been rather more active, but the large supply of German fabrica, and the over supply of domestics. have depressed prices below cost of production. From $1 37% a $2 25, fair soles of colored cloths are being made. Tweods ire dull. A great deal is doing in oarpets, The Bay State Mills have produced a domestic article, of Brussels styles of pattern, which is solling retail at one dollar per yard, and is in considerable request ‘Tho same company have now commenced in the manu- facture of their fall style shawls. British goods aro in moderate request. Dry goods, especially delaines, have sold freely this season; but the demand is now over, Linens are in overstock. and have crowded the auction rooms. to the damage of prices. Cloths, howover, are steady, though low in price. The importations aro light, from the unfavorable returns to those of lust season, French goods, except fur silks and ribbona, are very de- ressed in price. The public sales have been numerous. Phin dress goods have suffered materially in price, owing to the cold spring, Silks are firm, and good ribbons are scarce. There is no complaint making of the backward- ness of Western payments, but all considor the trade done Stocks are nty in the interior. and yet there is no haste to lay in heavy supplies.
