MERCIAL AFFAIBS, MONEY MARKET. Movvar, April 19—6P. M. ‘The market opened pretty well this morning for Mon- day, and a stormy, disagreeable day at that, Reading Railroad took the lead among the fancies; and before the close, an advance of 1 per cent was realized. Norwich and Worcester advanced \ per cent; Harlem. i; Brie Railroad, 4{; Delaware and Hudson, \, since last sales; Erie Bonds, 1859, Erie, 1871. Erie, 1862, 33; New Jersey Zine, $j. This stock is gradually leaving ths mar- Ket.and going into strong bands for permanent invest- | ment. The bulk of the daily purchases is made by par- ties who are interested in the company, and look upon it Ss 8 property the value of which cannot be estimated. At the second board, to-day, the market was quite buoy- nt, and the transactions unusually lunge. Zine Company went up 3j per cent; Canton Company, 3s; Reading Rail- road, 44; Erie Railroad, *;; Hartem, 4; Norwich and Worcester, 5. A small lot of Transit stock sold at 43 yer cent. cash. Holders are firm, and offer very fttle stock at current quotations, A small lot of Yhornix Mining Company stock sold this afternoon, 118 per cent, cash, This is a handsome advance m the previous sule, and shows a rapid improve- tent in public opinion relative to the merits of this com- fny,and its prospects. The price named above is really nothing for the stock, if one half that is reported of its resources is true, ‘The most uctive fancy in the street, to-day. was Reading Railroad, and the improvement in prices ao great as in any other on the list, ‘This seems the more extraordinary, when we take into consideration ‘the fact that there is not the slightost basis for the rise, and that it is purely speculative. The demand at the first board was exevedingly active, This extraordinary eall for stock we understand was occasioned by a move- ment in Philadelphia, to complete the corner which has 80 long been approaching the culminating point. It cer- tainly looks ax though it had reached its climax. Most of the floating stock of this company bas been placed on the books at Philadelphia. and the bulls, thinking they had the bears ina tight place, notified them to deliver. This of course created an active demand for stock. and the impression is, that the shorts have been pretty Well cleared out, It is rue they have been compell- ed to psy high prices; but before the lapse of many weeks they will find the stock plenty enough at considerably below those now current. The bulls hove all the stock, and it will be a question with them. by end by, what can they do with it? Without heavy shorts, prices cannot be sustained, It may, therefore, be put down asa fixed fact that Reading Railroad stock has touched its maximum. A leading man in the manage- Tnent of thif company visited this city a few days since, and marshalled hi for active operations, but his Position was not so impregnable as he supposed It appears to us that some measure should be adopted by the stockholders or by the Legislature, to prevent thoee directly connected with the management of our incorporated companies from connecting themselves with sny combination for the purpese of speculating in the stock, There can be no justification for the officers of any company engaging in the gambling operations of the longs and the shorts of Wall street; and it is time those who have for some time past appeared so prominently in these epeculations should be more gencrally known by the stockholders whose interests they have undertaken to protect. We sball be glad when all these fancy stocks get setticd down upon some solid basis—when all these ex- tensive iuctuations cease, and they are left to the natu- Tal changes of the market. It will be a good thing for these interested as permanent holders, when Read- ing Railroad stock ceases to be a football for specu- laters. Under the present regime it has been and Hudson Canal will not be rendy for at least two weeks. We have heard nothing lately about the Morris Canal. ‘The Miners’ Journal says:—From this period to the 1st of December next, will be only 32 weeks, To send to market the same quantity of coal that was sent last year frem Schuylkill county, to that period, would require a weekly shipment of 53,000 tons. in round numbers, To increase the quantity 200,000 tons, from this region, would require a weekly shipment of 60,000 tons per week, without the loss of a single day throughout the reason, A week's stoppage would require the weekly shipment to be increased 62.000 tons. to make up that quantity. Every week that it falls short will require a corresponding increase. The Morse line of magnetic telegraph between Wash- ington and New York, has declared a quarterly dividend of three per cent. ‘The Worcester banks declared the following semi-an- nual dividends on the first of April:— Banxs or Worcester, Mass. Banks. Capital, Dividend. Amount. Surples. Central $150,000......4 Citizens’. 150,000. . Mechanics’ 800.000. Quinsigamond 150,000. Worcester... 250,000 $1,000,000 $38,000 $97,000 A portion of the surplus of the Quinsigamond Bank was divided to the old stockholde>s in July last, when new stock was created. An extra dividend of 10 percent, merely ® machine, which bas worked the ruin of thourands, while those who have controlled the move- ments of (he machinery have realized fortunes out of their misguided constituents. It has been reported that no re- duction would be made this season, in the rates of charges fortransporting eoal, probably for the purpose of aiding the inflation in the stock. Notwithstanding this, it is well known among the coal dealers, that a reduction in prices is in contemplation. and they are holding back coal in consequenee. In the event of a contest commencing between the railroad and canal, we may look for results similar to those realized before, under similar circum- stances. The last weekly report of the anthracite coal trade, stated that the aggregate brought down by the Reading Mailroad this season, was 430.236 tons, agai 313,204 tons, This is wrong—it should have read, 430,336 tons this season, against 513.204 tons to the same date last year, showing a deficiency this season of 83.181 tons. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port. to-day, amounted to $53,000; payments, $2476 G6—balance. $3,524,416 51. ‘The Mechanics’ and Traders’ Bank has declared a semi- annual dividend of 6 per cont; the West Chester County Bank a dividend of 4 per cent. The moderate amcunt of business transacted in this and other seaport cities, this year, is rather a favor- able feature. as it gives all classes an opportunity to recuperate themselves, and strengthen their position for anyfuture expansion. These lulls have a favorable effect upon trade. Consumption generally goes on year after year, without those fluetuations which so frequently ap- pear in the movements of commerce; and whatever pause there may be one season in demand from consumers, ro- quires a corresponding increase in supply another, to fill up the vacuum. A dull, inactive season is not. therefore: such an unfortunate state of things as many think, but, on the contrary, should be regarded as s healthy reaction sure to be attended with most profitable results. For more than three years all classes have rushed headlong into the most extravagant speculations. Credits have been most enormonsly expanded, both public and private, We have carried on for several years the most extraordi- nary system of internal improvements ever known in any country. We have progressed in all things too rapidly, and but for the reaetion whieh has recently been realized, we should, perhaps, before this, have been in the midst ofa revulsion. About twelve months since there were decided indications of an explosion in financial and commercial circles. Several very heavy failures oc- curred, and for a time the most serious apprehensions were entertained. A more cautious policy was adopted, ‘and the effect has been beneficial. The internal trade of thecountry isin sound and prosperous condition, and it is Likely to continue so, if not forced beyond judicious limits. The moderate trade transacted thus far this season. gives the meteantile classes an opportunity to roncentrate their eapital and mske it more available. For a time there probably will be an accumulation of idle eapitel, which guaranties reduced rates of interest and temporary speculations in stocks. which are limited in their operation, and have no effect, favorable or unfavor- able. upon the legitimate movements of commerce. The banks, in periods of aetivity in trade, employ a large per eent of their means in stock speculations, in tem- porary loans upon bypothecations of securities, whieh een be made avuilable at tho shortest notice, and have to give way t legitimate demand for mo- mney from those engaged in trade. This in a measure accounts for the large amount of idle capi- tal st this moment seeking employment, and the fa- cilitates furnished for the inflation of fancy stocks. The opening of inland nevigation may give a greater im- petustotrade than has yet beem realized this season, and give activity to a portion of the unemployed capital of our bavking institutions. If not, we must wait pe- tiently for another season, with the consolation that no ‘actual loss has been experienced by the delay ‘The Baltimore and Obio Railroad Company have estab- lished a transfer office im this city. The Milwaukie and Watertown Plank road, have declar- 0 dividends amounting to ten per cent, since January last. Plank roads, in every section of the country, have proved most productive, and the stock is among the best investments of the day. ‘The alteration recently made in the mortgage law of Massachussetts, is opening anew and popular channel for short and permanent investments, For several years past, it has been quite diffieult to borrow money on real ertate security, in consequence of the three years right of redemption. Under the law, as it now stands, a mort- gage cAn pass a perfect title to an estate in about thirty days. This must have a favorable effect on this kind of preperty lve o great impetus to improvements in towns, villages, and cities The Suffolk Bank's loss by Brewer and Rand, will be $214,51 notwithstanding which the bank will pay ® dividend of five per cent for the past rix months, and have a surplus left of their reserved fund of $140,000. The sureties of the defaulters were for only $5,000 each The Wheeling G several of (he contractors on the Baltimore and Obio Railroad were in that city on Wednerday, from along the line of the road, They ail agree in saying that the work is progressing rapidly, and that (here ean be no doubt of their finishing up in time for running the cars by the first of January next. The fame paper states that the entire stock of the Union line of stenmboats, from Wheeling to Louisville, to commence yunning with the opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Pieirosd, bas been so taken as to combine the beat inte- 9s 0+ botk points apd intermediate poste | tion, and we must look for explosions and all sorts of dis. amounting to $20,000, was paid to the old stockholders of the Worcester Bank, July 1, 1851, when the new stock waa creai The annexed statement exhibits the names, capital, &e., of the various companies formed for the purpose of miving the quarts rock in California :— Cautrornia Goto Minina Compantes. The solitary holder of an unconfirmed Hoffman lease, is the Golden Mountain, and the three waiters on the title of Mr. Sargent, are the Ave Maria, West and East Mariposa. . The other companica | are independent of titles to land, as they only propose to crush and reduce the ore of other mines. Parties in Bng- land interested in these mines have no doubts of the vali- dity of Col. Fremont’s titles. In relation to she title of Mr. Sargent to the Mariposa, A great deal has been said, but nothing appears to be def- | nitely understood The title set up was that Mr, Sar- | gent obtained in April. 1850, one of Col. Fremont's usual leases for seven years, of 600 feet square, upon the usual condition of being located within a year. Of this lease, assuming it to be good, the company claim an extension to twenty-one years, on a deed which purports to be a grant from Mr, Flandin, another assumed agent of Col. Fremont’s, dated July 7. 1851, of “ my estate of Mariposa, covering ten leagues of ground, being about 45,000 acres» situated in Mariposa county.’? This lease is signed by Mr. Flandin, with Col. Benton as one of its attesting wit- nesses, and certifiea by a Mr. French, whom Daniel Web- ster agnin certifies to be a Justice of the Peace forthe district in which he assumes to act. One of the terms of this grant is, that until ratified by Col. Fremont it is worthless, The company holding this lease will proba- bly make new arrangements with Col. Fremont, and se- cure the claims they now assume. The ite capital of the companies recently formed in Great Britain for mining purposes in California, is upwards of eight mil- lions of dollars. We give it, to enable the public to strike an average to suit themselve: New York, April 17, 1852. 16 THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK HBRALD. Dear Srr—In your paper of the 15th instant, ‘ou published a purporting to have en written there had been more hogs the West this year, than has been generally sup- osed; and without going into any details, or show- ing any statistics as to number cut, he endeavors to show that there is no deficiency, from the faet that he has discovered some errors, made by the Cincinnati price current, on the three great western rivers, where the largest proportion of the hog: have been packed, which I apprehend will not alarm holders, or deter those from buying that wish was to receive a statement from Mr. Wright, of San Fran- cisco, relative to the prospects of the property, and alsoas to the title of the lease. The claims of Colonel Fremont | jinois and Mecsiset to the Mariposa district were freely discussed, and it was | and most of the elicited that he placed the whole of the questions arising out of his leases in the hands of the legal advisers of Mesers, Baring, with the view of dealing impartially with all the parties interested. With regard to the proceed- ings of the Agua Fria Company, it was stated that the di- started a portion of their staff to California, and the re- mainder would shortly proseed with the necessary ma- chinery. In the course of the discussion some severe questions were put reapecting sales of shares, &., but these were answered in @ manner that met approval, ‘The Carson's Creek Company have amine which was diecovered in 1850, which is said to exceed in richness of ore anything known in California. The company have heretofore chiefly directed their efforts to mining and bringing to the surface the rude ore, waiting until ar- rangements could be made in Europe for procuring ma- chinery for crushing and extracting the metal. This mine is situated in the county of Calaveras, near Carson's Creek, which runs in the Stanislaus river. The property consists of three locations—the mountain location on the crest of the lofty elay slate range, above Carson’s Creek, where the mine is working, consisting of a ledge of auri- ferous quarts rock. eovering an area of 1,762 feet in length, by a breadth varying from five to twenty-five feet, in which veins of gold are visible to the naked eye; a lo- cation on Stanislaus river, which is highly important, af- fording an unfailing supply of water, and a location on Careon’s Creek, valuable as a site for the erection of ma- chinery for mining purposes. It has been proved in this mine that ore from the deepest shaft yet sunk—183 fect—is richer than that near the surface. and that in addition to the “distinct veins, gold is diffused throughout the whole mass of the quartz rock. These statementeare certainly very flattering, and it is said they are supported by evidence difficult to discredit. The directors of the company in Englandare men of wealth and credit. The Rocky Bar Company is wholly American, estab- lished by the diggers themselves in California, in July, in 1860. Its claims are at Rocky Bar, on the middle fork of the American river. and in the grass valley inthe Nevada country. One thousand shares of this company have been put upon the London market for sale, at the price of £26 per abare. ‘The Sierra Nevada Company have, it is stated, pur- chased the freehold in an important and valuable gold mine, situated in the centre of the auriferous miaing dis- trict in the county of Mariposa. The mine is said to be of greater extent than the valuable leasehold mines of Agua Fria, Wert Mariposa, Ave Maria, &e.; the length of vein leased to each of which is two hundred yards only, The accounts given of thismine are so confused and meagre, that its shares have been unsaleable in the London Stock Exchange. except at a diseount. It is now about two years since the first attempt was made to form English companies to work the mines of California with Rnglich capital, skill and machinery, and in that short period thirteen projects, with capital heen presented to the public with varied success, ‘The disputes about the Freemont, Hoffman, and Sargent leasee, acted for a time most prejudicially on the public mind; } no doubt many new companies will be formed before any of the old companies realize anything from their opera- tions, The public mind is rife for this species of specula- appointment, The small sum fixed for shares in these companies, bas no doubt, drawn hundreds of thousands of people in them, ‘The'par value of shares in all but two of these companies js one pound sterling, a sum within the means of thourands, who but for this would not have been | connected with the movement.
