MONEY MARKET. | Tuonsvay, March 25—6 P.M | The stock market was depressed to-day; most of the H fancier fell off a fraction, and the tranasctions were oom- paratively limited. At the first board, Canton Company | Geclined 4 per cent; Reading Railroed, ‘4; Kageworth, | 34; Brie Railroad 1¢; Norwich and Worcester, 1; Delaware * and Mudeon, i. Nicaragua Transit Company advanced | per cent, From the present appoarance of things in | _, Wall etreet, we hoald judge that there will soon be quits | an important falling o in transactions, whieh w will depress prices considerably below those now rulin, At is only by keeping up the excitement and activity in the market. thet even prosent prices can be sustained, to | say nothing about an improvement, ‘he advance rn ported thus far, is by no means real, It.is all on | Paper, and it is utterly out of the question for holders to realize, without running prices down fail | as rppidly as they have ranup. ‘The inflation has been | #0 great upon euch a weak basis, that a collapse is to oceur any moment. The accumulation of interest is £0 rapid upon such high prices, that it isa matter of con- | {siderable importance to holders, and, in time, adds largely to the first cost of unproductive securities, ‘This isan | item which is not sufficiently considered in etock epecu- lations, Several Leavy houses in the street, in connec- tion with large outside capitalists, have, within the past + few days, commenced bearing the market, and are pre- + pared to rell extensively upon any and every advance in prices. The inflation has been sufficient to give even the most cautious bear confidence enough to operate for afall, Atthe second board, the quotations of the morn- ing were pretty well sustained, and the market closed steady, The operations, this afternoon, were only toa moderate extent. and appear as though the demand for the leading fancies was steadily falling off. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port to-day. amounted to $72219 65; payments, $228,216 12—balance, $2,640,892 $7, ‘The news by the steamship Europa, from Liverpool, is neither important or interesting; neither is it in agcom- mercial point of view so favorable as that received by the previous steamers. Quotations for cotton were a little lower, but the market was moderately active, Bread- : tuffs were quict. without material alteration in prices. The returns of the Bank of England for the week ending the 16th inet. show an increase during the week of £171,- 146 in the bullion, in both departments ; £179,823 in the public deposites ; £465,604 in other deposites ; £12,342 in the rest ; £7,224 in the government securities ; £215,400 in other securities, and £461,170 in notes unemployed. Of notes in circulation there was a decrease of £286150.— The Bank held £19.410,070 gold and silver bullion and . euce larger amount than ever in hand before at one time, ‘There are reports in circulation calculated to injure the Cochituate Bank of Boston. The Boston Journal says:— “The paragraph which appeared in our paper this morning, in reference to the Cochituate Bank, was based upon a re- port in circulation yesterday, which, we are satisfied, is without foundation. ‘The Cochituate Bank has, we are authorized to state, at no time made loans to directors beyond the amount, or even up tothe amount, allowed by law, and its general condition is as good in every re- Fpect as any bank in Boston, as the commissioners have intimated.” Stoek Exchange. $3000 Olio 6's, 56, 1106's 5 sha NY & NW 1000 111 int I'm 28 Erie RR. aes « ‘ RR, 1 .
