By ap amalgamation of these ecmpanies, opposition, to » certain extent cesses; all parties employed are gusran- teed remunerating yrices for labor; the rivalry which has Devkrupted severa! companies, will olor ger exist, while prices for coal to the consumer will be reduced, by the greater supply put upon the market. The pudlic worke of Maryland (tbe Ohesapeaks and Ohio Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railrcad.) will be much benefited by the increased transportation of e041; and the aity of Bal- timore, frem which place ths trifling epporition to the measure emanates. will be immensely benefitted by the trade. It is possible the companies which are seoking ‘an smalgamation may, after atrogg'ing along ip a weab, tieckly condition for several years, gather strength enongh to get into active oprration; and they may not Under the present administration of the affairs of these companies, they make no progress, and have very poor prorpects—united, they acquire capital, strength, active resources, and facilities for immediate operation, The Legislature ehould by all means look extirely to the result, While the ccat mines of every other section of the country are actively worked and made highly produo- tive, the great Cumberland coal regio remaivs dor- mant, for went of capital aud enterprise among the dif yerext inoorporated companies. The bituminous coal of that region is equal to the best Welsh ooal, and for steam purposes, either stationary or afloat, has no superior in the world, It is, therofore, important that every facility should be afforded by the Legislature of Marylend for the developement of the mineral resources of that State, for the inorease of revenue on her public works, by en- eoursging transportation of coal to tide water, and for the rapid extension of our ocean steam marine, by en- suring fall eupplies of that coal, the value of which has been teated by numerous and satisfactory experiments. ‘There are annually imported iato the Uniled Btates about two hundred thousand tons of foreign coal, at a cost of nearly one million of dollars. The Cumberland coal is particularly adapted to the purpose for which this foreign ocal is used, and there is no reason why we should import the first ton, We have every variety of coal in this country, and we can mine it and transport it to tide water in quantities sufficient to meet any demand for oonrumption or shipment. All we want is capital; and the Legislature of Maryland will be doing an in- valuable service to the country at large, by granting the neoesrary facilities to the numerous incorporated mining companies in that State to work more advantageously by ecmbination. The Cumberland coal region should send to market during the present year, 1852, a least five hundred thourand tons. That quantity will find a de- mand at fair prices, and give » great impetus to steam navigation generally. The Cunard steamers use this coal on thelr outward trips, and the Ooliins steamers will be forced to use it, or suffer themselves to be beaten in speed on the great Atlantic race course. ‘The total amount of Virginia State stock issued from the Siet of March, 1851, to the 5th of February, was $2,574,685, of which $1,000,000 was sold st par, and $948,000 at » premium of two percent. The amount 0! registered certificates transferable in person or by power of attorney, sold, almost without exception to citizens of Virginio, was $631,585. The contract with Selden, Witkera & Co, is forfour millions. The amount sold and Gelivered to them, up tothe bth instant, was $1,013,000. ‘The further sum of $2057,000 remains to be delivered at such periods as the Board of Public Works may require, ADVERTISEMENTS RENEWED EVERY DAY.
